at 401 richmond who co-present exhibitions during the

festival. artists and curators were present, including

    Vtapes (Studio 452) Lisa Steele.

If youre disappointed to have missed this event, dont

worry, we have a few more art crawls up our sleeve.

BEE COnDOFor the past three years, our roof garden has been home

to a solitary bee condo. The condo allows PhD candidate

J Scott MacIvor from York University to collect data about how elevated green spaces are used by existing

bee populations and the impact they have on the species

were seeing in urban environments. Our roof garden was

one of over two hundred that participated in this study

that will culminate in a research paper on the subject.

A MODEL nEIGHBOURSome neighbours share sugar. Ours share architectural

models of Ottawa. a model was recently removed from

storage at Lundholm Associate Architects (Studio 389) that shows a never-built proposal for a large piece of land

that includes the chaudiere Islands in the middle of the

Ottawa river. Their neighbours, Windmill Developments (Studio 376), happened to see the model and realized it

depicts a site that they are in the midst of developing almost

twenty years later! The thirty-seven acre site straddles both

Ontario and Quebec and Windmill plans to create an

exemplary mixed-use community that will be developed

using the highest green building standards. The model

has been whisked off to Ottawa to be repurposed with

    modern, miniature buildings. JO

  • 3In September we hosted the first annual SPARty (Spadina, Peter, adelaide, richmond) block party in our west parking lot and laneway. hosting the party in this somewhat unconventional space was very intentional.

It was an opportunity for tenants from all the buildings in our block to come together as a community and to

also explore how we can activate and reimagine these unique laneways that are the main connectors

between the collection of historic buildings. The party featured food from local restaurants, live music from

musideum, art installations, and interactive activities (aka giant jenga).

REMEMBERInG JEAnnIE tHIBIt is with a heavy heart that we remember artist Jeannie Thib, who died peacefully on October 26. Jeannie was a remarkable artist whose work in pattern and form explored many mediums including printing, architectural works, and large-scale, public art installations. her art had a delicate grace that was reflected in her, as a person she will be greatly missed. her life was celebrated by the arts community on november 12 at the The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery. Katzman Contemporary will hold a tribute exhibition of her work on February 1, 2014.

  • 4World Literacy Canada (WLc, Studio 281) has over sixty years experience serving women and children by

offering literacy programs in India that reduce poverty

through education. They also advocate and speak to

issues surrounding gender equality and the importance

of building a global citizenship movement. here in

canada, programming focuses on building awareness

along with raising funds to sustain their initiatives both

near and far. This cross-cultural development is a vital

part of what WLc does and executive Director Mamta Mishra has been a valuable ambassador.

We unintentionally (but luckily) timed the writing of this

profile in mamtas final year at WLc. mamtas the only

eD weve ever known in the organizations seventeen

years at 401 richmond. after guiding the organization

and its activities for twenty-six years, mamta will leave

behind a rich legacy in literacy programming, evident in

some of the projects and events were highlighting here.

In mamtas words, World Literacy canada has contributed

to shaping canadas hard won reputation as a country

committed to understanding the interconnected and

interdependent world we live in. Write for a Better World perfectly exemplifies this vision. Its a contest designed

for children in grades five to eight that asks them to imagine

waking up in another country and then to write about what

might happen next. Last year, over 1500 children from

every province in canada submitted stories in both

english and French. The deadline for entries is coming

up on april 4, 2014. If you know a budding writer, visit

    www.worldlit.ca/write2014 to participate.

currently, WLc is gearing up for another season of the

KAMA Reading Series that launches in January with five events, featuring some of the best literary talent in canada.

The series clusters authors under themes to tease out

connections between readings that spark discussion on

topics like Feminist Writing & Living. The February 26 installment is titled To Serve & Protect and includes a reading from 401 richmond tenant and former city of

Toronto mayor John Sewell (Studio 213).

In a world that is increasingly digital and global, the

face of literacy is changing and mamta suggests that

WLc plans to respond to that by remaining committed

    to sustainable community development programming.

In creating generational education opportunities World

Literacy canada helps to break the cycle of poverty.

Visit www.worldlit.ca to find out how you can make a difference.

COntEMPORARY tEXtILE StUDIO COOP was featured in an impressive spread in Quilting Arts Magazine that told the story of this unique work space. If youre interested in seeing the coop in person, visit www.textilestudio.ca for information on events and workshops.

PARK PEOPLEs executive Director Dave Harvey appeared on a panel of experts in a City of Parks Promotion in Octobers Toronto Life Magazine. The article also mentioned the new Fort York park space in development that will be canopied by a luminous sculpture by Vtapes Kim Tomczak and Lisa Steele.

WInnIE tRUOnGs signature drawings are hard to miss!

This one caught our eye in Covet Garden Magazine (Issue 38) hanging

in the home of two local designers.

KRIS KnIGHt is also a favourite of the Covet Garden Magazine couple, as we spotted one of his ethereal paintings just a few page flips away from Winnies.

401 RICHMOnD popped up in an article from Kingwest Magazine called

A Tale of Two Kings that discussed the zoning changes that set the stage for the repurposing of our fine old building.
