4.05 Adaptations of Organisms (Sample

Activity)Scenario 1: Scuba Adventure

1. Max? Is that you? 2. Isaac! What are you doing out here?3. I am

looking for my blimp

fish. 4. Huh? I haven’t heard

of a ‘blimp fish’ before.

5. It’s a cool new fish I discovered, but I am having a hard time

finding it again. 6. Maybe if you tell me

about it I can help you find

it.

My Blimp Fish lives in the biologically diverse coral reef, and is most similar to the butterfly fish in diet and color. However, my fish has a spherical body and tapered tail.

Isaac:

Do you have a picture of your blimp fish?

Max:

Isaac:Yes, its right here…

No wonder you have a hard time finding your blimp fish. That disruptive color pattern makes the outline of the body hard to see. I bet that helps him avoid predators.

Max:

Isaac:Yes it does. The blimp fish’s rounded body and tapered tail make it a slow mover. Its color pattern is what keeps it safe from predators such as snappers, eels, and sharks.

Max: Maybe if we knew what it eats, we would have a clue were to start looking for it.

Isaac:Excellent idea Max!

It has a forward elongated mouth. That means it is probably getting its food from small crevices. Max: The size of its

mouth also indicates it can only eat small organisms such as insect larva, worms, and spiders.

Then we should start a search close to the coral where those tight spaces are good food spots for the blimp fish.
