What is STEM?STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning, combining multiple academic subjects with a focus on the real world impact of these lessons. It is about students applying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in relevant contexts that make connections for them between school, community, work, and the world around them. STEM education provides opportunities to create skills that move students forward to become stronger problem solvers and more creative innovators that can lead tomorrow’s global economy.

STEM activities should be student-centered and teacher-guided, engage students in investigating questions that impact real world problems, allow for inquiry-based learning through hands-on activities, and reinforce 21st Century skills.

Our PhilosophyThe Orlando Science Center collaborates with educators to help students develop 21st century skills that allow them to succeed in school and beyond. We believe that STEM education is essential to preparing future generations with the skills needed to enter the workforce and pursue vital and lucrative careers.

Professional Development Categories We offer hands-on professional development trainings for early childhood, elementary, secondary, and out of school time educators. Our trainings are designed to increase educators’ STEM literacy and ability to implement STEM ac-tivities with learners. Below are the general training categories that we offer.

All of the workshop times listed in this guide are for content only and do not include lunch. Workshops have a maximum of 30 participants and can be offered on location or at the Orlando Science Center. Travel fees are assessed separately.

STEM PRACTICES

These workshops focus on pedagogy and teaching strate-gies. Participants will experience STEM activities and reflect on the facilitation strategies that were used to create an effective STEM environment in their own classrooms.

LESSON GUIDES

Participants will experience standards-aligned activities that they will be able to immediately implement with their own students. Participants will receive a teacher guide binder which will contain the lesson guides for the activities.

OUT-OF-SCHOOL TIME

Educators will learn how to integrate STEM activities into their own out of school time programs. Participants will learn what makes an activity “STEM” and gain facil-itation strategies that can be used with their students.

SKILL TRAININGS

Each skill training focuses on a specific type of technology. Participants will learn how to use the technology and how best to use it with their students. Please refer to the skill trainings page for more information.
