Dear People of St. Mary’s, Here is a good prayer for the first part of the summer. Take time to enjoy the days that surround us. They go all too fast. For me, I love nothing better than to get down and dirty, digging in my flower garden and sitting on my front porch with a beverage and reading, walking to visit my neighbors and just savoring summer. Here’s the prayer:

We give you thanks, O Lord, for summer days, for waterfalls, and the waves that beat on lazy shores, for the fruit of May’s blossom and gardens of delight.

We give you thanks for murmuring sound and brilliant wing, for all your carnival of living things:

birds, butterflies, fireflies, honeybees and loons, these creatures that cannot keep the secret of your art

but wear it in trees and dandelions and green carpets on the valleys.

We thank you, Lord, for laughter and for rest, for animals and fish and time to play,

for friends and for love’s embrace. And for the hope that endless summer

is a hint of our eternal joys.Lord of our happiness and our sorrow’s end,

we give you thanks for the beauty that surrounds us through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

JUSTICE PEACE AND THE INTEGRITY OF CREATION (JPIC): The JPIC committee continues to work towards creating a COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP in Guatemala. Several parishioners recently visited villages in Guatemala with whom we could possibly partner. Following is a story of a modern day martyr in Guatemala. Fr Larry Rosebaugh (1935 – 2009) spent most of his life among people most vulnerable to the violence of the world. In his last years, working in Guatemala with young people battling AIDS, his superiors told him it was time to come home. He never made it. While driving in Guatemala with other priests on May 18th, 2009, he was shot and killed by masked gunmen. He left the following writing for us to ponder.“The frustration of dire poverty doesn’t really impress until we become utterly impoverished. The pains of hunger become real to us only when they are ours. In the meantime we can try to put ourselves in the place of such victims and attempt to alleviate

some frustration and pain.” - Fr Larry, martyr of Guatemala, pray for us.

If you are interested in doing little one time projects, give us a call. The tasks never end. Here are a few reminders to keep our cemetery looking nice and to lessen the work of the mowers and trimmers: Please put decorations on either side of monuments and not in front. Also only rings and vases purchased from the cemetery are to be used on the mausoleums and columbaria. Call a day or two ahead of going out there and new vases can be provided. Also, solar lights are banned from our cemetery and will be removed and discarded.

GOD’S PROVIDENCE Today’s readings celebrate God’s providence. No matter how wonderful (or heartbreaking) our relationships are, God always provides for us. No one cares for us the way God does. Isaiah delights us with a deeply intimate image of God caring for us “as a mother comforts her child.” The prophet describes us not as the usual “children of God,” but as “babies.” We should not resist this image, but rejoice in it. Trusting in God’s care, we can all let down our guard and rest like infants in the lap of our mother. Saint Paul’s trust in God allows him to be at peace like this. He boldly declares that no one can “make troubles” for him, because he has given himself completely to Jesus. And when Jesus sends his disciples out to preach and heal, he challenges them not to provide for themselves, but to let faith be their guide.

NOT CATHOLIC? BEEN AWAY FOR A WHILE? Been coming to Mass with your spouse for some time and are wondering what you have to do to be Catholic? What does it mean? Something happened –or not- that you have been away from the church for quite some time and are thinking about getting things in order with your spiritual life? RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process for you. It is a time for searching and growing in faith. We have a team who dedicates themselves to helping people on their faith journey. Call Fr. Steve at 763-5781 with inquiry questions.

HEALTH DANGERS OF SNORINGSnoring is a common condition that can affect anyone and occurs when the tissue in your throat relaxes and vibrates as the air you breathe in rushes past the soft tissue. In fact, it is estimated that more than 40 million Americans snore.

Causes of Snoring• Stuffy nose. Anything that stops you from breathing through your nose can make you snore, like a cold or

allergies.• Sleep posture. Sleeping on your back can make you snore or make it worse. Try sleeping on your side to

improve snoring.• The shape of your nose. If the thin wall between your nostrils didn’t quite form properly, one side can be smaller.

This is called a deviated septum.• The shape of your mouth. If the upper part of your mouth toward your throat—the soft palate—is low and thick,

it can narrow your airway and make you snore.• Medications. Sedatives, muscle relaxants, and some antidepressants can relax your tongue and the muscles in

your throat and cause you to snore.• Sleep apnea. Sleep apnea causes you to stop breathing as you sleep and can make you gasp for breath or

wake during the night. Sleep apnea is linked to stroke, high blood pressure, and heart disease.• Obesity. Being overweight can cause bulky throat tissue, narrow the windpipe and cause snoring.• Smoking and alcohol. Smoking and using alcohol can lower muscle tone in the upper airways and cause

snoring.

Ways to Prevent Snoring• Speak with your physician as you may need to be tested for sleep apnea. There has been advancement in

CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines and oral devices that can treat sleep apnea.• Sleep on your side, not your back.• Quit smoking. This reduces inflammation and swelling in the airway, which may contribute to the narrowing of

the airway.• Raise the head of your bed 4-6 inches. Sleeping at a slight incline can prevent the tongue from falling toward the

back of the throat and contributing to a blocked or narrow airway.• Promptly treat breathing problems, such as a stuffy nose caused by a cold or allergies.• Do not eat a large meal at night. A full stomach can push against your diaphragm, further hindering your ability

to breathe easily.• Avoid drinking milk before bedtime. Milk can make snoring worse since it forms a mucus layer over your throat

and tongue.

Steps to Staying Healthy in the Summer Summer is a time of get togethers, bbq’s and the occasional getaway, which is fun, but can make it easy to get off track with a healthy lifestyle and even make you sick. If your summer plans revolve around any of these activities, here are 7 ways to ensure you stay healthy this summer. Get outside to exercise. Pick an outdoor activity—go on a hike, take a nature walk,

or go cycling, roller blading or swimming with your kids. Give your diet a berry boost. Have a cup of mixed

berries like blackberries, blueberries, or strawberries every day. They will load you with antioxidants which help prevent damage to tissues and reduce the risk of age-related illnesses. Also, berries are rich in fiber which helps keep cholesterol levels low.

Be good to your eyes. Protect your eyes while at work and play with protective eyewear. Wear sunglasses with 99% UVA and UVB protection to help prevent cataracts and wrinkles around the eyes.

Take a vacation. Improve your heart health and take a vacation! Vacations can have multiple benefits by lowering your blood pressure, heart rate, and lowering stress hormones such as cortisol, which can contribute to a widening waist and increased risk of heart disease.

Embrace “healthier” BBQ’s. Rather than the traditional burgers and brats, embrace healthier options such as grilled chicken and fish. Try grilled fruits and veggies for a fresh side dish.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Because alcohol does not replenish water stores and dehydrates the body it is important to drink a glass of water after every glass of alcohol. Also, drink at least 64 ounces of water daily and even more if exercising or outdoors for more than a few hours. For every hour in the sun, drink at least 1-2 glasses of water. This can prevent dehydration and replenish energy levels while soaking in the sun rays.

Eat breakfast. Without proper nutrition first thing in the morning, the body can wilt in the summer sun and can potentially lead to heat overexposure, dehydration and fainting. Eating a healthy breakfast can help prevent these risks and help kick start the day with more energy.

LITURGICAL AND MUSICAL NOTES

July 7, 2019 • 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time • Year C

Needed: More than 12This Week’s Readings at Mass

▶ Isaiah 66:10-14c - Mother Zion

▶ Galatians 6:14-18 - The Cross, our true boast

▶ Luke 10:1-12, 17-20 or 10:1-9 - Mission of the 72

QTwice in the Gospel of Luke Jesus sends disciples out to spread his mission by curing the sick and preach-ing the Kingdom of God, a realm of peace, justice, and compassion for all. The first time, in the chapter before this reading, Jesus sent out his 12 apostles. In the passage today, he sends out a larger group of 72 others. It seems Jesus realizes that he needs more than 12 helpers in this work!

It’s likely that this larger group of 72 included women as well as men. In chapter 8, Luke mentions by name several women who accompanied Jesus in his minis-try including Mary Magdalen, Joanna, and Susanna, “and many others, who provided for them out of their resources” (Lk 8:2-3). When Jesus sends out the 72 they are sent out in pairs. In the Acts of the Apostles and Paul’s letters, there are references to married cou-ples who work and travel together as missionaries.

Jesus instructions were practical for mission-aries of his day when the early Christians re-lied on the hospitality and generosity of other open-minded individuals who wanted to hear about Jesus’ teachings. He did not want them weighed down or slowed down by hauling their material possessions, and he challenged them to stretch to trust in God’s care for them provided through others. He also gave them advice about what to do when they were not received well, the proverbial “shake the dust from your feet” which Jesus demon-strated in last week’s

reading when he wasn’t received in Samaria. Al-though we may not be full-time Christian missionar-ies today, all of Jesus’ instructions for how to conduct ourselves in our daily lives can still be relevant and offer guidance for our work and personal relation-

What might you be invited to let go of to lighten your load and free you up

for easier movement in your life’s work right now?

Where/when have you offered your skills, gifts, or time only to have them

rejected? What was it like to try to shake the dust from your feet and move on?
