HAN’s Theory of Change

4/23/2015 Hunger Advocacy Network

Increased access to advocacy

resources will increase

stakeholder advocacy.

Legislative advocacy by

local stakeholders will influence choices made by legislators.

Legislators will support anti-

hunger policies.

Incremental state-level policy changes will

reduce food insecurity in San Diego.

Page 5: 4/23/2015 Food Funders Presentationfiles.ctctcdn.com/4bbf42f9001/d6b78ccd-7d7d-44f0-b957-20ac0b67… · 4/23/2015 Food Funders Presentation . Hunger in San Diego County: Systemic

“Give me a lever long enough

and I alone can move the world.”

4/23/2015 Hunger Advocacy Network

The highest impact non-profits “use the power of leverage to create change. In physics, leverage is defined as the mechanical advantage gained from using a lever. In business, it means using a proportionately small initial investment to gain a high return.” --Stanford Social Innovation Review

The concept of leverage captures what high-impact nonprofits do, and why HAN works to address hunger through collective advocacy.

Like a person lifting a boulder three times their weight with a lever and fulcrum, HAN is able to achieve greater social change than our mere size would suggest.

How HAN Uses Advocacy

4/23/2015 Hunger Advocacy Network

Legislative, administrative, and budget advocacy allows

HAN Partners to affect root causes of widespread

social issues, which can’t be done through direct

service alone.

HAN Partners’ frontline work informs the Network’s

advocacy work, making legislation more responsive

to specific food security needs of San Diegans.

So…What Exactly is Advocacy?

4/23/2015 Hunger Advocacy Network

“Any attempt to influence the decisions of any

institutional elite on behalf of a collective interest.” -Jenkins, J. Craig. “Nonprofit Organizations and Policy Advocacy.” In The Nonprofit Sector: A Research Handbook, edited by Walter W. Powell, p. 297,

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1987.

“When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I

ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist.” - Helder Camara, Archbishop of Olinda and Recife, Brazil (1909-1999)
