Carter, Principal Russell Pratt, Jr., Assistant Principal December, 2012 Dear Parents and Guardians, I hope this Beeline finds you well! We are very excited about our fun and learning for the month of December. Our boys and girls are continuing their studies and making great progress. Please, continue to check our weekly Monday Message for specific curricular plans for your child each week. As you know, we have very special students here at Halethorpe! I’d like to take a little time to highlight some of our exceptional achievements. The following boys and girls earned an A in every subject for the first quarter: Allison Atkins, Abigail Clontz, Kaylee DelosSantos, Ashton Knight, Kaelynn Kerns, Amikah Lopena, Ethan Broschart, Jack Epp, and Georgia Eppard. We congratulate each of these students for this stellar accomplishment! Speaking of stellar, I’d like to also recognize Sadie Beaver for being selected as our school’s Junior Astronomer! Sadie participated in a voluntary project in which she had to draw images of the night sky. Her drawings were selected from all other students and she is receiving the following awards: Constellation, Moon Observation, and Deep Space! Sadie’s drawings will also be on display at the County’s annual science fair! The holiday break is a great time to stock up on school supplies. After the break, we will be ready to continue moving forward and challenging your child to be his or her best! Having all of the needed supplies is a preliminary step for success! I wish each of you a peaceful and joyous holiday season and I look forward to seeing you in the New Year! Sincerely, Jill A. Carter Principal

COUNSELOR’S CORNER The holiday season is upon us already and it is time to think about giving and gifts. Again this year, we will be having a sock and mitten tree in the lobby to collect gifts for the needy families served by the South West Emergency Services. This project has been very successful in the other years and the children at Halethorpe have really enjoyed giving to others. Please encourage your child to pick out a small unwrapped item to place on or under the tree. Instead of socks and mittens, it could also be a useful gift of school supplies such as crayons, pencils, markers, or a glue stick. Another possibility is a small toy or book. Please consider letting your children earn the money to buy the item or use their allowance for the gift. This would be a meaningful way to teach the value of giving and sharing with others less fortunate than ourselves. It is also important as parents to think about the messages we are giving to our children in the types of gifts we give them. Toy guns and video games that promote violence give the message that parents think violence is okay. There are other toys that encourage learning, problem solving or cooperation. Board games offer the family hours of fun times

together and books encourage learning and the value of reading. As a parent, you know your child better than anyone else. When choosing a gift for the holidays, think about things your child enjoys. If your child likes to have a pocket full of little things, you can create a treasure box of special treasures. Or, if your child likes creative things, a craft box full of art supplies may just be the right gift. Also, think about your child’s abilities. Toys that encourage creativity and imagination and allow children to use their minds are the best toys of all. A battery powered toy that does everything for a child leaves little room for imagination. Very soon, the novelty wears off and the toys lie broken or discarded. The valuable toy is the one that can be used in

many different ways and can stimulate the imagination. Last of all, be sure to consider safety when choosing a gift for your child. Another good rule to follow for the holiday giving to children is “less is more.” Sometimes parents get so

caught up in trying to give children everything they want they overwhelm the children. Appreciating what you receive and understanding that you can’t always get everything you want are important lessons for children to learn. Make this a special Holiday by choosing a few gifts that your child can really value and spending some time doing this that build memories and traditions with your children.

This month’s “TA-DA’s” Canned Food Drive: Halethorpe collected a grand total of 395 food items. Mrs. Miskimon’s Kindergarten classes collected more food items than any other class again this year. They collected 120 food items! Thank you everyone at Halethorpe who helped needy families in our neighborhood. Thanks to the Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) group for organizing the drive and Mrs. Fearer who assisted me in taking the canned food over to South West Emergency Services. We are proud of all the students at Halethorpe who showed compassion for people who are in need of food.

This month’s “What to look for” Giving Tree/Box – 12/3-12/20: We will have a Giving Box in the lobby to collect gifts for needy families. The gifts will be taken to the South West Emergency Services (SWES).

--Mrs. Vernier, School Counselor

A NOTE FROM THE HEALTH SUITE If your physician decides that it is necessary for your child to receive prescription and non-prescription medication during the school day, a physician’s order along with your permission must be provided to the school. All medications must be brought to the school in the original or duplicate container that has been labeled by a pharmacist, with the current prescription on the container.

STUDENTS MAY NOT PERSONALLY TAKE UNUSED MEDICATION HOME

**FOR ALTERED SCHOOL SCHEDULES, THE FOLLOWING MEDICATION GUIDELINES WILL APPLY, UNLESS YOU INDICATE OTHERWISE IN WRITING**

One hour late opening: doses will be given as usual with minor modifications in timing, if needed.

Two hour late opening: medications scheduled to be given before 10:00 a.m. will not be given in school; other doses will be given according to the prescribed schedule.

Three hour early dismissal: medications scheduled to be given at lunchtime or later will not be given.

Communicable Disease Control Preventing and controlling the spread of infectious disease agents among students and staff is an important function of the school nurse. Although prevalent in the school age population, the spread of infections in schools can be successfully prevented through immunizations and the use of appropriate preventative and control measures. Parents should be encouraged to keep students home if visible signs or symptoms of a communicable disease are present, including:

Cough Vomiting Diarrhea Runny nose Rash Jaundice Sore throat Swollen neck glands Headache, in conjunction with other symptoms Fever (student should be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school)

--Mrs. Wells, R.N., School Nurse

APPLICATION FOR VOLUNTEER SERVICES

Five years ago, Baltimore County Public Schools adopted a new policy in order to ensure the safety of our children. All volunteers must complete a new Application for Volunteer Services each year. The school will do a background check in order for volunteers to be in the classroom, in the building, or to chaperone a field trip. Please make sure you send in a completed form for yourself, your spouse, a grandparent, etc. so that all can continue to volunteer.

Page 10: 4300 Maple Avenue Halethorpe, Maryland 21227 (410) …halethorpees.bcps.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_165164/File/Staff... · 4300 Maple Avenue Halethorpe, Maryland 21227 (410)

Every volunteer and chaperone must have completed a new application and be cleared for volunteering. Applications are available NOW! Please do not wait to return your application to the school. VOLUNTEER TRAINING WORKSHOP All persons wishing to volunteer in the classroom, in the building, or to chaperone a field trip MUST attend a Volunteer Training Workshop. The training video is available to view in the school office.

PLEASE DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE DAY OF YOUR CHILD’S FIELD TRIP TO REQUEST TRAINING. TRAINING MUST BE COMPLETED ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE TRIP.

A NOTE FROM INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC We are SO excited because we have begun to have Full Band and Full Orchestra rehearsals to prepare for our concert, January 10th (Snow Date: Jan. 15th). Students are asked to wear BLACK PANTS/ SKIRT and WHITE SHIRTS! The 5th Grade Instrumental Students have been doing a PHENOMENAL job with their instruments and practicing! Kudos to them and to you as parents! The ORANGE November calendars are due and this month there will be a Special Green December Practice Calendar that will include PRIZES! If your child performs for you or their family (neighbors count!) write an FP in the box so they get a prize (they only need to do one to earn the prize). If they practice EVERYDAY in December, they will get a prize. Finally, the top student in EACH of the Band and Orchestra with the MOST TIME PRACTICED in December will be awarded a special prize to be given out at the Concert! If they take private lessons, guitar lessons, or piano they can also count that time as well! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me at [email protected]. Since I am between two schools this is the most reliable way to reach me and I will usually email back within 24-48 hours. You can also check out my website http://[email protected] or follow me on Twitter @MsTrumpler . Thank you again for all of your support and encouragement for your students in music!! Remember to keep your calendars clear for the Arbutus Side by Side Concert March 14th and the Spring Concert May 23rd.

HALETHORPE ELEMENTARY CAFETERIA NEWS

Fun Nutrition Facts for Kids Food is fun, says MyPyramid for Kids. For kids, eating healthy means finding the right balance between good foods and not so good foods. Educating kids about proper nutrition is the first step in putting them on the right path. Some fun nutrition facts can help kids make good choices most of the time. Breakfast Makes Kids Smarter Breakfast is an important meal. Kids who eat breakfast do better in school because they are better behaved and perform better, the American Dietetic Association explains. They also have an easier time maintaining a healthy weight. Some parents may struggle with getting their kids to eat in the morning, but breakfast can be quick and painless. Some simple yet nutritious breakfast options include whole-grain cereal and low-fat milk, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or whole-grain toaster waffles with fresh fruit. Please be advised if your child receives free lunch, he/she gets free breakfast as well!!!
