As the resurrected Christ visited the disciples, he told them that just as he was sent into the world by his father, so Jesus sends us into the world, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with the world. As scholar Donald Senior writes, the First letter of Peter is one of the New Testament’s most beautiful and compelling books with it’s profound christology, vision of the church, and instruction on the Christian life. For the Easter season we will be walking with Peter, one of the disciples who was at the empty tomb, sent into the world.

The Aldersgate Gateway

On Palm Sunday we cried “Hosanna”

(Lord, save us). On Easter morning and ever after we proclaim “Alleluia,” (praise the Lord) because indeed He has saved us! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Where do we go from here? What comes next – during the other 49 days of Easter? Following the first Easter those days were used in preparation for the birth of the Church. Jesus spent forty days ap-pearing to different individuals and groups of people. He spoke during that time about the kingdom of God. He even ate with them. On the evening of the day of his Resur-rection, Jesus appeared, suddenly, in the midst of a locked room filled with his disci-ples. They had locked themselves in for fear that the angry Jews would come after them next. Jesus’ first words to them were, “Peace be with you.” How gracious is our Lord. Not a reproof or a reprimand; a blessing! In one short statement he gave them peace from their guilt and anxiety. One had peace from denying Jesus three times. Several had peace for having fallen asleep when he told them to keep watch and pray. Ten had peace from having gone into hiding during his trial.

One disciple was missing that night. Thomas was not there. We don’t know where he was or why he had not been among the group. But Jesus knew, and so he came again the following Sunday and sin-gled out Thomas with an invitation to be-lieve he was risen from the dead. Thomas had no doubt – he responded to Jesus, “My Lord and my God!” Thomas had fully under-stood. Jesus was not just a man, but the liv-ing God, and addressed him as such. We are given peace in his words that this life is not all there is, and that we never need be separated from God. Alleluia again! So what happens next? Just as the disci-ples did after receiving the Holy Spirit, we should be about our work. Heaven is our home, but this world is our workplace, as-signed by God. Come be present as we learn from Peter and our pastors what it means to be Sent Into the World in our Easter Season sermons.

May Fellowship Dinner -- May 7 The Nan Tucker Ringers will provide the program, playing some favorite, familiar hymns, such as: Do Lord, I Love to Tell the Story, For the Beauty of the Earth, and All Creatures of Our God and King!

Chucky Visits the Children of KinderPrep

Pastor Stephanie came to visit with Chucky Chipmunk as the members of Green Meadow Point Garden Club brought Chucky and his anti-litter/recycling/reusing slogan “Stop Throwing -- Start Stowing” to the children in the three-year-old classes at KinderPrep in early April. The children learned about recycling and reus-ing as well as the im-portance of picking up litter, turning off lights, and conserving water as they heard the story of Max the Green Monster. They took home a booklet prepared by the garden club, and made a craft to remind them to be good to our earth.

Conference Mission Kits -- Layette Kits and Birthing Kits through April To create a Layette Kit, please gather the following items: ◊ 6 cloth diapers ◊ 2 shirts or 1-pirece body suits ◊ 2 baby washcloths ◊ 2 gowns or sleepers ◊ 1 sweater or sweatshirt, open in front ◊ 2 receiving blankets ◊ 2 diaper pins . . . then wrap the items in one of the receiving blankets and secure with the diaper pins.

Birthing Kits: start May 1 Place 2 receiving blankets and $3 in a 1-gallon zipper bag. (The rest of the items are purchased in bulk.) Donate “hotel” soap sam-ples if you can, please.

Deliver all kits to the church office.

Graduate Sunday -- June 1st

All high school or college/ university graduates will be recognized during the 11:00 a.m. service on June 1. Please let the church office know the name and from what school or college each student will be graduated (bulletin sign-up sheet or 484-8217). The annual Graduate Breakfast will be in the fellowship hall at 9:45 a.m. We need to know how many family mem-bers (including the graduate) will be at-tending the breakfast. Thank you!

Mission Committee Seeks Volun-teers to Make Phone Calls for Blood Drives The “personal touch” of a friendly voice from a church member is our best recruiting tool for making appointments and inviting walk-ins to donate.

Directory Update to Resume Photography Appointments

Folks not included or who have married or add-ed a child (or more) since the last pictorial di-rectory are invited to get an appointment for your picture to be added to an update. Appointments will be scheduled for Sunday afternoons from 11 - 1, and Mondays from 6:45 - 8:45 p.m. from Mon. 5/4 through Sun. 6/8. Availability target date is early fall.

United Methodist Men

The United Methodist Men generally hold a dinner meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. Note that the month of June has a “5th Sunday” in it, on which we will collect loose change for “Heart Havens” in the commons after services.

On the Horizon ...

SKY now has a Lunch Bunch! There is no sign-up necessary. Just come prepared to enjoy a meal with friends. Our third lunch will be Thursday, May 8, at 11:00 at NIX restaurant. NIX is located at the end of Taylor Road past the (Churchland) Dollar Tree. Cross American Legion Rd. into the parking lot and NIX is at the far end.

May 6: Shopping Trip -- We’ll go to Settler’s Land-ing, Trader Joe’s, and Anderson’s (where we will have lunch). $10 per person. Beverages will be on board. Leave time will be announced.

May 16: Game Night -- This is always a popular ac-tivity for SKY. We will eat, play and chat to have an enjoyable evening. Friday, May 16 at 6:00 p.m. Meal yet to be determined.

May 30: Golf -- This Friday outing is a hit with our swingers! Sleepy Hole Golf Course, $25 to the pro at the event and $4 to Tommy Vaughan early for prizes. Begins at 9:00 a.m.

Also coming up, but undated : -- Beach Day at Buckroe -- enjoy touching your toes in the surf and strolling along the beach. Go for a swim if you’d like! Bring a folding chair if you have one. We’ll have a picnic lunch and then take a ride on the carousel before leaving town.

-- Bluebird Gap Farm trip for a Grandkids and Grands day. (Grandchildren not a necessity -- we will share.) A stop at Bass Pro following a bag lunch at the “farm” will top the day with sightings of wild animals (taxidermied and on display) and a large aquarium!

The Nan Tucker Ringers go beyond ringing their hand-bells inside our Sanctuary. Each spring and fall they also visit assisted living and nursing facilities in our area. This spring they will offer a concert as the program for our May 7 Fellowship Dinner, also. Their upcoming schedule is: 5/7 Fellowship Dinner 5/18 11:00 service at Aldersgate 5/19 Churchland House at 6:00 p.m. 6/2 Emily Green Shores at 6:00 p.m.

United Methodist Women The Dana Tyson Circle of the United Methodist Women invites any woman interested in programs or study-ing about and serving women and children in the community and beyond. This Circle meets the second Tuesday of each month usually at the church in Room 100. To join us, just show up. We would love to include you.

The Susannah Wesley Circle of the United Metho- dist Women meet every third Tuesday of the month. Details of these meetings are announced nearer to the meeting date. Please consider joining us.

United Methodist Youth

Our Youth will be participating in the annual event, the 30-Hour Famine on Friday and Satur-day, April 25-26. This year they will travel to Oak Grove UMC for the event. Participants will experience a taste of what it is like for so many who live without many resources in a some-times harsh world. After lunch on Friday the Youth will not eat again until 6 p.m. Saturday. They will also spend the night in cardboard boxes outside. Funds raised from their experience will go to World Vision and Stop Hunger Now.

Troop 212 Boy Scout meetings are held on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Al-so, the Troop 212 Committee Meetings are scheduled for April 24 and May 15.
