What is it?• The 450L-ENETR network interface

module and 450L-APR-EN-8 receiver plug-in are accessories that connect to the 450L GuardShield family of safety light curtains, which transform the standard light curtains into smart devices

What is CIP Safety?

CIP Safety™ is an application extension to the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP™), which is a media-independent communication protocol providing users with a unified communication architecture throughout the industrial enterprise. CIP and CIP Safety are built on “the black channel” principle where it is assumed that the host network is unreliable and to mitigate this, error detection is built into the protocol of the connected devices which will go to a known safe state if error is detected.

As industry evolves and Industry 4.0 technologies become more pervasive, customers rely more increasingly on information from intelligent safety components to minimize unplanned downtime and increase efficiencies. Ethernet is the network of choice for obtaining information from intelligent safety relays due to Ethernet’s ease of design, installation, and configuration. Customers are demanding that all intelligent products, including functional safety devices, be Ethernet based, simple to configure, and integrate seamlessly with Logix based controllers using Add-on Profiles (AOP).

CIP Safety over EtherNet/IP can communicate over existing enterprise-level Ethernet networks and the Internet.

What firmware version is required for CIP Safety? • V5.002 or greater

Does CIP Safety work on existing 450L hardware? • CIP Safety is only available on 450L LCs with a 4k encryption key bootloader (fw V5.001 and greater). This

hardware first came through production on 1st October 2020.

Why isn’t CIP Safety available on all 450L as was stated at 450L launch?• The intent at launch of the 450L series was that CIP Safety would be available as an upgrade option for all

hardware already in the field. Rockwell Automation Design for Security requirements have evolved since that time and a new stricter requirement has come into force requiring a move to 4k encryption key bootloaders. To maintain the highest level of network security, field upgrade by customers is not possible. For any customers with older hardware that want to upgrade to CIP Safety, please contact the Product Manager and arrangements to facilitate this will be made on a case-by-case basis.

What do I need for 450L CIP Safety over EtherNet/IP • Select your light curtains as normal, then simply select the 450L-APT-PW-5 Transmitter Plug-in, 450L-APR-EN-

8 Receiver Plug-in and the 450L-ENETR Network Interface Module

Where can I find list prices for 450L catalogs?• Contact your local sales office or Rockwell Automation distributor

Can I use my existing stock of plug-ins with the CIP Safety products?• The 450L-APT-PW-5 Transmitter Plug-in doesn’t have any firmware and all versions are compatible. Only the

450L-APC-IO-8 Cascading plug-in has firmware loaded onto it so you need to ensure that the 450L-APC-IO-8 Cascading Plug-in is running fw v5.002 or greater. Any 450L-APC-IO-8 Cascading Plug-in running v3.x or v5.x fw can be upgraded to the latest compatible fw version via Studio 5000.

Is 450L-B compatible with the CIP Safety module?• Yes, 450L-B can be added to the CIP Safety network

How do I get Blanking or Muting if I need to select the 450L-APC-EN-8 as the Receiver plug-in?• The light curtains are registered into Studio 5000 by model number. 450L-E models can then be configured for

Blanking and Muting etc., via the AOP.

What is the response time of the CIP Safety version of GuardShield 450L safety light curtain system?• There are many factors affecting response time of a GuardShield 450L system and the connection reaction time

of the safety network must also be added to the total response time in the light curtain to calculate the safety distance. Refer to publications 450L-UM001 and 450L-UM002 to calculate the response time of the light curtain.

What 450L model will suit me best?• In general, the GuardShield 450L is for customers looking for improved operability and efficiency of machinery

by allowing easier access for semi-automatic procedures• Robotic cells, palletizers, wrappers etc.

• 450L-B: Best for customers who need only basic on/off functionality• 450L-E: Required for customers requiring functionalities like cascading, muting or blanking, or those who want

the convenience of the Integrated Laser Alignment System

What is the lead time?• The CIP Safety parts are stocked parts. We strive to achieve the standard Rockwell Automation lead time of 4-

days for stocked parts however please use the Advanced Order Notification (AON) process for larger orders or where fast delivery is critical wherever possible to allow production to be scheduled.
