Mesa del Sol History

Late 1800’s Joaquin de la Torre was granted 16,523 acres, 4,000 acres of which was developed into Clark Colony at Three Mile Flat.

1899 W.G.B. Moore acquired 78 acres from the United States Government and sold it to J.H. McDougall, a prominent business man, cattle buyer, a real estate owner, tax collector and banker. Taking advantage of the river and the high sunny mesa, McDougall began its development as a health spa. Old timers tell of Teddy Roosevelt’s stay there. McDougall built, among other things, the stone building, presently the tool shed, which is the oldest building on the property today.

1917 McDougall sold to Santo Wicker of Ohlone Indian heritage. Little is known of his eleven year tenure.

1928Fred and Ethel Weybret take possession. Fred Weybret was in the printing business, owning the Salinas Journal until 1932. He became the Past Exalted Ruler of the Elks, President of the Rotary Club and in 1939 was elected to the California State Senate. The Weybrets did the major development of the property, including the building of the main house in 1936, the cowboy house, water tower and cool room.

1945The Weybrets sold the ranch to Stephen and Mary Rianda. Stephen Rianda was a lettuce baron in Salinas and a past president of Grower Shippers Association and Mary was a talented artist. The primary embellishment of the picnic area for gracious living and extensive entertaining was instigated by the Riandas. They named it Mesa del Sol, Spanish for “sunny plateau”.

1973Upon Stephen Rianda’s death, the property was divided among the children with the 3.75 acres surrounding the main embellishments being sold to Thomas and Noreen Green.

1998The Greens sold to John and Ann Hougham who also bought back 10 acres from the Riandas, planting 7 of the acres in wine grapes. Since John’s death in 2000, Ann Hougham has continued the vision, lovingly restoring the buildings and the property, while developing the award-winning Mesa del Sol wine.
