FEAST OF FAITH Gathering
When Pope Benedict XVI visited the United States in 2008, tens of thousands gathered in Yankee Stadium to celebrate the Eucharist with him. What made them differ-ent from all the other excited crowds who have assembled there through the years? When they began to sing togeth-er, to listen together, to pray together, they ceased to be a crowd, and became a liturgical assembly. It was not where they were but what they did that set them apart. The Gospels speak of many instances when Jesus prayed alone to his Father. But Jesus also put a special value on communal prayer. “Where two or three are gathered to-gether in my name,” he told his disciples, “there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). Jesus gave his own mission to his followers, sending them forth to do every-thing he did: to heal, to teach, to proclaim the kingdom. Jesus wants us to meet God in and through each other. So the Christian community continues to gather, Sunday after Sunday. When we get up on Sunday morning and come to Mass, we respond to Jesus’ invitation, and we express our trust in his promise that whenever we come together, he comes, too. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. GOD’S HOUSE The Church is God’s special dwelling place and some peo-ple come to pray so please be aware of this and please refrain from idle chatter before and after Mass. We should behave differently in God’s House as opposed to being at home, at the mall, a grocery store or a civic center.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
We are experiencing the darkest, longest nights of the year. For centuries, people in the Northern Hemisphere have kindled fires against the dying of the light, turning away the dark of the win-ter solstice, and leading the imagination to hope and new begin-nings. It is thus easy to understand why these solstice celebra-tions of non-Christian Europe attracted the annual remembrance of the birth of Jesus Christ, the Light of the World. In time the solstice migrated away from December 25, but the Christmas feast remained in place. From this day, a whole sea-son of celebration developed, stretching from Advent through the days of Christmas, and even beyond to the February 2 bless-ing of the candles, and beyond that to March 25, the Annuncia-tion, nine months before the next Christmas. Centuries ago, this was New Year’s Day, and many reasoned that it was the date of Adam and Eve’s fall, and the date of the Crucifixion. The mes-sage is clear: don’t let your Christmas be over too soon. Keep the lights blazing into January, and savor the meaning of the feast! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Confession Definition For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: “Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent.’” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 1857).
Grave Matter What constitutes “grave matter”? Some common sins, according to the bishops: missing Sunday Mass, sex out-side marriage (including pornography and masturbation), serious theft, abortion, defamation of character and purposely getting drunk.
Concerns & Answers Can’t I talk to God directly, not a priest to get forgiveness? Not according to the Bible. Read John 20:21-23; 2 Co-rinthians 2:10; and 2 Corinthians 5:18
If God knows everything we do, then how come we have to go to confession? You may know your friend broke your iPod, but wouldn’t it be aggravating if he knew you knew, but still didn’t say “I’m sorry”?
Doesn’t God forgive no matter what? If we think of sin as merely breaking rules, it is hard to understand why God can’t just “look the other way.” But sin is real; it hurts us and makes us distant from Him – and unable to enter heaven. We can only be restored if we confess.
Confession just gives people the idea that it’s all right to sin as long as you’re sorry later. If a man is confessing drunkenness while he has plans with his buddies to go barhopping and get drunk again the coming weekend, he can’t be forgiven. He has to have decided to stop. Con-fession stops sins; it doesn’t start them.

CHRISTMAS TREE ROOTS Egyptians brought palm tree branches into their homes in late December as a symbol of growing things. Romans trimmed trees with trinkets and topped them with an im-age of their sun god to celebrate Saturnalia, which oc-curred at the end of the year. Druid sorcerers hung gold-en apples and lit candles on oak trees to celebrate the winter solstice. Our Christmas Tree custom began long ago with the Germanic tribes that existed thousands of years before Christ’s birth. These pagans believed in a god named Woden, who was thought to reside in fir trees. Therefore, they put fir trees in their homes during this time of year to receive the benefits of Woden’s presence and to be protected from evil in the coming year. Also, ever-greens are thought to represent life and immortality; thus they were a safeguard against the cold lifelessness of winter. In the Middle Ages, the Feast of Adam and Eve was celebrated on December 24; a fir tree hung with red apples called the “Paradise Tree” was its symbol. It is generally agreed that the use of an evergreen tree as part of the Christian Christmas celebration started 400 years ago in Germany and spread to Northern Europe.
