Hiltihas a support package that isunmatched in the passive firestopindustry.

Fire safetyFire safety is a major concern for allwho are responsible for the design andspecification of new buildings.

The causes of fire are varied andunpredictable, and often outside thecontrol of the designer. What can becontrolled, however, is the effect of fireonce it has started.

The control of fire within a building isnormally affected by a combination ofactive and passive fire protection systems.

Active fire protection systemsActive fire protection systems are designedto detect fire, and either to extinguish it bymeans of water sprinklers, halogeninstallations or fire extinguishers, or tominimize its effects by smoke ventilation.Active systems are also used to assist theescape of occupants by the provision ofalarms and emergency lighting.

Passive fire protection systemsPassive fire protection is designed intothe structure of the building, so that iffire breaks out, it is contained within afire compartment, surrounded by fire-resistive walls and floors. For the wallsand floors to maintain their fire-resistance, however, every opening, penetration and joint must be sealedagainst the escape of fire and smoke.

Intumescent fire sealsThe materials used to form the seals mustnot only fill all gaps at the time ofconstruction, but also, in the event of fire, expand to close any further gaps formed bymelted components. These intumescent fireseals, if properly installed, can help preventfire escaping from a compartment for arating period of up to four hours. This timeperiod can prove vital in allowing occupantsto escape, and fire-fighters to control the fire.

HiltiAround the world the red Hilti toolbox isa familiar sight on building sites, andthe Hilti name is known and respected.

To most people Hilti means precision toolsand secure fastenings. For many years

however, Hilti has applied their skills to anew area of construction where precisionand security are vital: firestopping.

Problem The illustration on the left indicates a rangeof typical problems facing the designer.

    Construction may consist of:

    concrete wood gypsum

    The problem areas are:

Movement jointsRigid or low movement jointsHead of wall and perimeter jointsMetal and plastic pipesPlastic pipesMultiple penetrations, pipes and/orcablesCable trays (with permanent sealingof opening during construction, ortemporary sealing allowing additionalcables to be installed subsequently)Cable trays (with permanent sealingof opening during construction)Cables (single or bundled)Electrical outlet boxesHeating/ventilation/air conditioning

Fire Resistance RatingTo help prevent the rapid spread of firewithin a building, certain walls, floorsand joints are required to meet a specificfire resistance rating the period oftime during which a building componenthas been tested to confine a fire orcontinue to perform a structural functionor both. Through-penetrations and jointscreated during the construction processrequire the installation of firestopsystems in order to bring the wall orfloor back up to its original fire-rating.

FirestoppingIt is essential that every penetration orjoint in a fire-rated wall or floor isadequately protected by sealing orfirestopping such that the buildingcomponent is restored to its original fire-rated condition in order to maintaincompartmentalization. The quality andexcellence of Hilti Firestop Products helpensure that fire, smoke and toxic gasesare contained to reduce the tragic lossof human life and damage to property.

Opening 1. Clean the opening. Surfaces to which CP 604 will

be applied should be cleaned of loose debris, dirt, oil, wax and grease. The surface should bemoisture and frost free.

Application of firestop 2. Insert fill of mineral wool (or backer as required).

    3. Apply firestop over backer.

    4. Allow firestop sealant to level. Once cured, CP 604can only be removed mechanically.

    5. For maintenance reasons, a penetration seal couldbe permanently marked with an identification plate. In such a case, mark the identification plate andfasten it in a visible position next to the seal.

Chemical resistance At room temperature the cured silicone sealant is

resistant for a short time to diluted (15%) acids and

lyes/alkalis as well as commercially availablecleaning agents and disinfectants (except thosecontaining iodine).

Concentrated acids and lyes/alkalis destroy siliconerubber over time.

Solvents and mineral oils cause cured silicone toswell. Consequently, proper functioning of thesealant should be checked after exposure to asolvent or mineral oil. Please contact your localsales representative or the nearest Hilti Center ifspecial requirements for chemical resistance have tobe met.
