As I promised in my last column, I will start reflec ng on the different ministries we have in the parish with the hope you will think and pray about joining one or several of them. I would like to start this series with the most fundamental one: Hospitality. Many of you may think this is a mistake, or at least an exaggera on, but you are wrong.

Think about Holy Thursday at the Last Supper, there are so many things we celebrate that day - the priest-hood, the ins tu on of the Eucharist, the beginning of the Church. However, we o en forget one of the strangest gestures Jesus performed, the washing of the feet. It was a gesture like no other and so we do not misunderstand it he took the me to explain what he meant. I invite you to go and re-read the 13th chapter of the Gospel of John.

Those parishioners that welcome you and serve you during the Sunday liturgies are there fulfilling the great commandment of love. Without service, there is no true love. This is why I call ushers, sacristans, cleaners, decorators and all who help to set up for the Sunday liturgy, the founda onal ministers. They represent Christ on his knees washing the apostles’ feet. They are the servants of the community, they are also the “virgins” wai ng for the Master’s arrival, to use anoth-er familiar image. We cannot underes mate their role- they are the Father’s face that welcomes you as you return to his house and for them, you are the face of the Master who finally comes home. This mixing of metaphors is inten onal. We are meant to be God for each other; par cularly in the Eucharist. Remember this each me you greet them at the door.

Please, consider seriously par cipa ng in this amazing ministry in which you have the opportunity to be the face of God to your fellow parishioners. Your smile and your kindness can make a tremendous difference in the way they celebrate the Eucharist and will help them to open their hearts to receive Him.

The ministry of hospitality sets the tone of the celebra-on, you no ce that if they are distracted you get dis-

tracted, if they are grumpy you get grumpy. It is essen-al that we give to this ministry the importance it de-

serves. Maybe the Lord is telling you today, come serve my people the way I did.

ST. DOMITILLA FEAST DAY

LOVE ONE ANOTHER

In the Gospel for the Sixth Sunday of Easter we are met with an extraordinary challenge: Jesus commands us to “love one another as I love you” (John 15:12). The letter from John echoes this command. Of course, we are to love those in our family, those we work with, those we like. But the scriptures make clear that we are also to love those we never notice, those we purposely avoid, and even those we are tempted to despise. In this Sunday’s selection from the Acts of the Apostles Peter shows us how far God’s love ex-tends, and how far our love should extend in re-sponse. Peter realizes that God no longer “shows partiality” to the Jews, sharing divine love exclu-sively with them. Christ has revealed that God’s love extends to all people, and so should ours.
