FOREWORD

It was this time last year that I wascongratulating Crewe Alexandra on theirsuccessful promotion to league one and onceagain they have had success at Wembleywinning the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. Onbehalf of the local business community may Icongratulate Chamber President and ClubChairman John Bowler on their success. They are a real asset to South Cheshire.

Crewe Alex is a well-respected club whohave a clear vision and have laid down solidfoundations to achieve their goals. TheChamber is currently trying to establish astrong foundation for the All Change forCrewe initiative to achieve the success we allwant to see for South Cheshire. Part of those foundations being laid is the ‘Local plan’ which was presented by Cheshire East Council earlier in the year, as thisdevelopment Strategy sets out the proposedoverall number of new homes andemployment land that will be needed todrive economic regeneration for Crewe andNantwich. The Chamber has been liaisingwith members and will continue to do sothroughout the process.

We have all taken a deep breath since theHS2 announcement and while it is fantasticnews, there are other developmentshappening that might not be on the samescale but are very important for the future ofSouth Cheshire. The old post office buildingson Weston Road have now been demolishedand work will start shortly to construct thenew entrance, Crewe Green Link Road hasthe funding in place, pinch point funding hasbeen granted to improve access to Junction16 on the M6, MMU Cheshire are researchingthe ‘Innovation’ needs for Crewe and theCheshire East Council has recentlyannounced a £1.5 million contract to develop

superfast broadband in Cheshire. These arepositive announcements that will improve theeconomic prospects of the area and theChamber is playing its part in making thesehappen.

As I write this editorial the Office of NationalStatistics announces that GDP has risen by0.3% in the last quarter, this figure means theeconomy avoided two consecutive quartersof contraction, which is encouraging news. This will clearly have disappointed those inthe media who thrive on negativity and theywill claim the figure is insignificant, but a 0.3%decrease would have been reported as theend of the world!

In South Cheshire there is an air of positivity.I speak to many businesses and often thediscussions focus on their expansion needsand recruitment plans and combined withenquires about inward investment and theprojects identified earlier, confidence isbuilding and long may it continue.

One event in the calendar that reminds usthat we have fantastic businesses in the areais our Business Awards which will be takingplace at Crewe Hall (Pg. 21). It is anopportunity to celebrate all that is good inSouth Cheshire and I encourage you to enteryour company or nominate others.

I hope you enjoy this magazine and if yourcompany has good news or advice to sharewith the local business community pleasemake sure you submit an article for the nextedition, so we can play our part in helpingyou achieve your success just like the Alex!

Erika Floodgate, 18, is the friendly voiceat the end of the phone when you call the Chamber. Here, she speaksabout her role as an AdministrationApprentice and encourages others toconsider workplace learning.

“For the past few months I have beenworking towards a Level 2 NVQ in BusinessAdministration. Unlike my friends I don’t goto college, instead I complete assessmentsand workbooks to build up an onlineportfolio. Making sure I complete the workis manageable but hard work.

“With an apprenticeship you are beingtrained in specialist subjects as well asgetting real experience from a workingoffice. I’m part of the Cheshire East A-Team

and I complete my course through TotalPeople. When I was younger I couldn’timagine working in an office. I thought it wasboring but now I enjoy it.

“The scheme is great because you’re not expected to know everything, you learnas you go on while also earning money.

“Although I’m basically a student, I get treated like an adult and given responsibility.I have grown into my role and becomemore mature.

“My favourite part about being anapprentice is meeting lots of differentpeople. It has really helped me developcommunication skills and interact withpeople from all walks of life and businessowners of all sizes.

“My job is really varied and I've had somegreat opportunities, such as going toimportant events and meeting HRH PrinceEdward.

“Further education is not for everyone andbeing an apprentice is a good lifeexperience. Learning while earning is a greatconcept and you can pick up different skills. You should be prepared to have a lot ofresponsibilities but it gets easier the moretime you spend at work.

“So to anybody thinking about starting anapprenticeship I say go for it!”

Here’s what members have to say about theSouth Cheshire Chamber . . .

Cheshire East Council is urging people tojoin its conversation on the high-speed raillink HS2.

The authority understands that people wantto know what this means for them and

wants them to help shape its futurediscussions with HS2 Ltd and theDepartment for Transport (DfT).

Since the Government’s preferred routewas announced, Cheshire East has beenanalysing what it could mean for the areaand has published a variety of detail atwww.cheshireeast.gov.uk/hs2

The council believes it will bring realbenefits, including a high-speed servicetaking passengers from Crewe to London in58 minutes and a maintenance depot atBasford sidings creating many new jobs.

But right now, it wants to hear what thepeople think. This will help Cheshire East torepresent their views as strongly as possiblewhen the official consultation period on the

route is announced by the Governmentlater this year.

Council leader Michael Jones said: “As acouncil, our job is to listen to the peopleand make a case to the Government abouthow we want them to move forward withthe HS2 proposals.”

Losing two close family members and ajob through redundancy in the sameyear might have stopped most peoplein their tracks, but Dennis Richardsused this and his experience of stressin the teaching profession to inform hisnext career move.

He founded Stress Free Living –specialising in stress management in theworkplace and helping employersunravel complex legislation includingHSE and the new British Standard inStress Risk Assessment (PAS 1010).

He said: “Stress now overtakes back problems as the maincause of long-term sickness absence in the UK, costing theeconomy over £3b a year. “A good stress management policywill reduce absenteeism, the chance of litigation, staff turnoverand recruitment costs while increasing productivity andimproving employee satisfaction and corporate image.”

He added: “Whether the stress employees suffer is due to theworkplace or originates outside it, it is in the employer’s interestto give staff the tools to manage it. This can range fromrelaxation techniques to cognitive behavioural methods ofdealing with negative thoughts and anxiety. Unfortunately manyemployers leave it too late, when the employee is on long-termsick leave and seeking compensation.”

In the quest for clean energy, a wide range of industrial gases andchemicals are used in the production of modern wind turbines –turning wind energy into electricity.

Standing proud off growing areas of coastline, wind turbines aredesigned to withstand the toughest environmental conditions, including the corrosive effects of wind and waves. The specialistmetals used in their construction are high-performance and haveprotective coatings, which make them especially resilient and hard-wearing.

Mike Hevey, Air Products’ European business manager - Metals,Glass and Minerals, said: “The manufacture and assembly of a windturbine is a complex one due to the mechanical stresses involved.Steel and Aluminium are used to provide the strength from themain hub with the blades themselves being manufactured fromglass reinforced plastic. It’s where Air Products industrial andspecialty gases help optimise the manufacturing process.

“Gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, argon and CO2 are commonlyused in the manufacture and assembly of wind farms, in order toproduce high performance composite materials or specialistprotective coatings, which are designed to withstand the harshestof environments. Our ability to optimise the productivity of cleanenergy solutions is vital to the future of the planet and we aim tocontinue to work closely with industrial partners to support theresearch and development of new materials and solutions.”

Air Products is actively working with a variety of industry groupson research and development projects to find clean energysolutions for the future.

South Cheshire Chamber of Commercerecently held another of its successfulExport Club events at the Hunters LodgeHotel in Crewe.

Titled ‘Peer to Peer’, delegates attendedfrom companies of varying size and from awealth of sectors, further proving thediversity of assistance offered at theseevents.

Once the delegates had settled in with achance to network over bacon sandwichesand beverages, Keith Jones of Link Me 2Export started the morning’s presentationswith his talk on the ‘Importance of GlobalBranding.’ Explaining that even thoughgaining customers from overseas can beexciting, you need to do your homework -a message which was emphasised withexamples of how some of the world’sbiggest brands have made costly mistakeswhich could have been easily avoided. Itwas an interesting topic, covering what toconsider and what to avoid if you intend togive your products a global audience.

Edward Greenhalgh of EEG Consultantsfollowed, using his anecdotal presentingstyle to take the attendees through the‘Practicalities of deciding to Export’. Aperfect fit for our Export Club events,Edward used the knowledge gained fromyears of real world experience to discussbest practice when it comes tointernational trade and also highlight anypotential pitfalls.

After a brief break which gave theassembly further chance to network, TonyBrown of UKTI North West topped themorning with a presentation involving‘Selling through Agents and Distributors’.

This proved very interesting with ourattendees and fit well within the narrativeof the morning. Selling through agentsand distributors can be a fast way to growsales into other markets, but it has itsrisks so a presentation like this wasinvaluable – the delegates proving this byasking questions throughout.

ADVERTORIAL

Recruitment Company KPI is helping a local charity tofind work for homeless people.

The charity - The LATH Group (Looking after theHomeless) runs a twice weekly drop-in centre at ChristChurch Hall in Crewe, for homeless and needy people. Its mission statement is “To ease the plight of thehomeless in the Crewe area, with the long term aim ofeliminating it altogether”.

The Chairman of Lath, Bernard Potter, who founded thecharity in December 2009, and dedicated volunteerhelpers, work closely with other providers in the areaincluding the Salvation Army, YMCA, Cheshire EastCouncil, Samaritans, Citizens Advice Bureau, Local Churches, SSAFA,the Royal British Legion and others to help address this growingproblem.

The drop-in centre was opened in November 2011, to cater forhomeless, needy and lonely people of the Borough. Hot drinks andtoast are provided in the morning, and a soup and roll at lunchtime, with the occasional gift of fruit and/or cakes from volunteers. Leisureactivities include Newspapers, Playing cards, Dominoes and Pool.Advice is offered on a range of problem areas, and a laptop is availableto enable assistance with Housing applications, and Job seeking. Morephysical help is provided in the form of tents, sleeping bags, warmclothing, and other essentials.

Attendance has risen from about six, when the centre was first openedto an average of 20 currently, of whom over half register as of no fixedabode (NFA). However, during the period from November 2012 toFebruary 2013, 255 people utilised the facility, comprising 49individuals, of whom 24 recoded themselves as NFA. This will includethose ‘sofa-surfing’ (staying on a very temporary with friends orrelatives), and those actually sleeping rough.

Many find themselves in this frightening situation throughthe loss of a job, the breakdown of a relationship, financial trouble, or a combination of other similarunforeseen circumstances.

More recently, a boost has been to both job seekingand accommodation opportunities. Anne Baker, thespecialist Human Resource volunteer at Lath explained“We engage with our guests about employment, helpwith CV’s, give them interview techniques, help insearching for suitable vacancies and, importantly, helpto rebuild their confidence”.

Ryan Jardine, the Managing Director of KPI then cameup with the idea of sponsoring one of the homeless people in a uniquejob-trial opportunity. KPI would essentially pay the wage of the chosencandidate and offer them ‘free-of-charge’ to a local business for a threemonth trial period in the hope it could lead to a permanent position.Ryan is also offering help in finding accommodation.

This philanthropic idea provides a win/win for both the local businessand the homeless person and, if successful, will pave the way for morein the future.

In parallel with this initiative Anne Baker would like to engage with localbusinesses to promote opportunities for work experience/placementsfor the homeless. If you would like to know more please contactAnne on 07803 936 682.

General enquiries, and other offers of help should be directedto the LATH Call Centre on 0800 508 8021, email:[email protected]. More information is also available on thewebsite at: www.lathgroup.org.uk.

Businesses are being urged to throw theirweight behind a new appeal to offerdignity in death to elderly folk who endtheir days in care homes.

St Luke’s Cheshire Hospice has launchedits ‘President’s Appeal’ in a bid to fundspecialist training for care home staff anda team of highly skilled nurses who willtake their expertise out into thecommunity.

Officials want the growing numbers of frailand elderly people in our community, many of whom have dementia, toexperience high levels of compassion andsupport in their final days.

Director of Clinical Services SiobhanHorton said: “Although many peoplebenefit from hospice care many more arecared for and end their days in carehomes.

“Therefore, this appeal is to fund thedevelopment of a compassionate caremodel for this marginalised, large andgrowing group of vulnerable elderlypeople. This will include direct care, education and research.

“Creating a model, with compassionatecare at its core, will be a long term andcost effective way of make the biggestdifference we possibly can to as manypeople as possible.”

• £50k would fund a post to workspecifically with staff in care homes, developing skills and a body ofknowledge and expertise thattranslates into excellent care for thefrail elderly and those with dementia

• £100k would pump prime a smallteam of professionals who couldwork across, and with, a larger group

of care homes and other areas wherefrail, elderly people are cared for anddie

• £150k would pump prime somemuch-needed research into what thereal needs are for frail, elderly peoplein the last phase of their life and howthey can be best cared for andsupported.

Siobhan added: “Our long term aim is tocreate a purpose-built centre wherenurses, educationalists and researcherscan carry out this valuable and much-needed work. It will benefit not just thousands of people locally butpotentially many hundreds of thousandsacross the UK.”

The hospice is hoping to win corporateand community support across South andMid Cheshire.

It’s been a long, cold winter and along time since the financial crisisstarted to crunch, but spring is theright time to at least try and spotsome green shoots andopportunities.

Many good businesses have beenstarved of cash and are nowburdened with a millstone of debt. The Insolvency Act provides a tool kit

of procedures for restructuring businesses. If there’s a solid andsuccessful business to save, one procedure available is a ‘pre-pack’administration order, an insolvency process where the business is soldback to its management, leaving the debt behind.

There’s nothing wrong with directors or shareholders buying backtheir own business and making a fresh start – the key is the transactionhas to be carried out with transparency and probity, with full valuebeing paid for the business to ensure that all creditors get a fair deal.

Case Study 1We acted for a chain of sandwich shops in Cumbria. The businesswas long established and had traded successfully, but took on furtherpremises at high rents; with the credit crunch, both footfall and spendat the new shops began to fall. Profits slipped, and in a businessdependant on a fast turnaround of fresh produce, cash flow problemsbegan to affect stock in the shops.

We met the director to explain the key issues and risks of thedeteriorating position; the director later contacted us and explained

that the business could no longer pay its debts. We planned andexecuted an administration order; within one month the business hadbeen reviewed, valued, restructured and sold for more money thanwould have been raised in a liquidation and a ‘fire sale’. The directoris now trading successfully with a smaller number of shops.

Case Study 2We acted for a modular building business in Yorkshire. The businesshad been very successful and secured large, profitable contracts in thepublic sector. Sales slowed down and as austerity started to bite, salesplunged.

We met the director and his lender and, again, planned and executedan administration order; within two weeks the business had beenreviewed, valued, restructured and sold. The manufacturing operationwas closed; the hire business sold back to the directors.

Remember, we’re always happy to have an informal, no-fee chat toexplain the options available. The key thing is early advice – pleaseget in touch. The earlier advice is given, the wider the optionsavailable. Don’t wait until there’s a bailiff at the door!

Need a loan? The Chamber can help . . .Let’s face it, until last week we usually associated Cyprus with summerholidays, three points at football for England or competition with theUK for last place in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Until now that is. Within the space of a week the country has gainedthe level of publicity that Cheryl Cole and my old mate Anthea wouldbe envious of.

However if you stand back and think about it then the proposals beingdiscussed in that country are quite staggering.

In the UK we are hit from all sides by both direct and indirect taxation. We tend to accept this to a degree because it is made on short termincome at source i.e. from wages and salaries or from purchases ofchoice via VAT, Fuel Duty, Stamp Duty etc.

The end result is that if we are frugal or should that be lucky, we endup with a surplus of hard earned at the end of the month that it is oursand ours alone.

There is a generation not too far back from where we are today thatbelieved that the best place for your hard earned was either in orunder your mattress.

The events in Cyprus have resulted in many people now questioningthe scorn they had previously poured over our elders for mattressstuffing.

What has happened on this MediterraneanIsland is ground breaking as they haveeffectively closed the banks and are lookingto take funds from already hard earned andtaxed deposits.

I suppose the cynics would say ‘well you can’ttake it with you’. As for myself I would at leastlike the choice.

No one is suggesting that we shall ever be ina similar position in the UK but nonethelesswe do need to stand back and think about it.

Returns on deposits are poor so perhaps the answer lies somewherein the middle. No matter what the outcome is in Cyprus by the timethis article comes to press, these events are perhaps a poke in the ribsto remind us that nothing is certain, other than we will still be vyingwith Cyprus for bottom spot in Eurovision.

If these events have at all prompted you to use surplus funds to investin your business and you are looking for someone to share the burdenof cost, then feel free to contact us at the Chamber where we do havefunds available. We cannot guarantee sun, sea and all night partyingon a Mediterranean Island but at least you will be spared anuncomfortable night’s sleep on a lumpy mattress.
