Since the last edition of ‘4FRONT’ it has beenannounced that the UK economy grew by0.8% in the third quarter of 2013 and theGovernor of the Bank of England stated thatthe UK recovery had taken hold, which isfantastic news and a confidence boost for thelocal business community.

While we are all aware of the difficulteconomic circumstances we have foundourselves in over the last few years, I have metwith many small and large businesses and it isclear to me that throughout the difficult periodour local companies have been constantlybucking the national trend and performingmagnificently well against all the odds.

My view was reinforced emphatically at our17th Annual South Cheshire Chamber BusinessAwards at Crewe Hall which had an extremelypositive atmosphere. The Awards are afantastic opportunity to celebrate successfulbusinesses and business people from our localcommunity and speaking to the judges, all theentrants were of an extremely high standard.

On the evening our Chairman John Dunning, declared at the Awards that the future looksbright for South Cheshire and although someelements are controversial, the Chambersupports the growth agenda and believes thearea can become an economic powerhouse. The business community through the Chamber, will have a key role to play in driving thegrowth agenda forward and we must not becomplacent and rely on other organisations todo it for us.

Throughout the year the amount of good newsstories in each edition of ‘4FRONT’ continuesto grow and long may it continue. TheChamber has been extremely busy. It is greatto see so many new businesses joining theChamber and taking advantage of our new

Welcome Mornings, which are also open toexisting members too. It is an opportunity tofind out how your company can make themost of their Chamber Membership. TheSouth Cheshire Business Loan Fund continuesto support a range of local businesses with theobjective of sustaining or increasingemployment locally.

While HS2 continues to be a hot topic at themoment, we should not forget our excellentconnections to major airports includingManchester. At our Annual Business Luncheonattendees heard from John Twigg, planningDirector for Manchester Airport Group andthe importance of their connection withCrewe.

In amongst all the good news, there was sadnews to report. Chamber Board DirectorBetty Foster recently passed away. A formerresearch scientist, Betty served as a Director atthe Chamber for over 20 years and will besorely missed. Betty was very passionateabout the area and would demand the verybest for Crewe and South Cheshire, a mantrawhich the Chamber continues to adopt.

I hope you enjoy this edition of ‘4FRONT’ andif your company has good news to shareplease submit your article to Tina at theChamber.

Finally, as we approach the Christmas period Iwould like to wish all our readers andMembers a very Happy Christmas and aprosperous New Year.

CHAMBER NEWS

Need a loan? The Chamber can help . . .As work progresses at Crewe Station you may, like me, feel that at long last we shall have astation access which befits the status of thetown as a major railway junction – not justhistorically but for many years to come, particularly so should HS2 come to fruition.

The impact however is not all about thestation’s appearance, it is more the operationalbenefits that will follow and the longer termplanning for accessibility and serviceabilityfrom projected higher volumes.

When visiting company premises in my bankingdays I was always wary of any business that felt

it necessary to have a fountain in the reception, (well stocked with fish)and a photo on the wall of the owner shaking hands with MargaretThatcher or Tony Blair.

Events of the past 5 years have taught everyone that cash is a scarcecommodity and capital expenditure needs to be specific and definedby result.

This is a maxim that every parent will be only to aware of whenengaged in conversation with their offspring whilst wearing the hat ofBank of Mum and Dad, albeit will constantly fail to put the messageinto action.

It is not easy to accept that a fortnight in Ibiza with pals is a keyelement of any teenager’s journey into adulthood or that a 63 reg caris an ideal first vehicle.

This is a true story. I recall one of my sons being in Australia and askingfor £400 to go scuba diving off the Great Barrier Reef – an expeditionwhich was funded by Bank of Mum and Dad. Whilst paying into NatWest Nantwich. I explained to the cashier what I was doing and as Iturned to leave, the woman next in the queue told me that she hadoverheard our conversation and she was doing exactly the same thingfor her daughter.

Whether either of us felt that the outlay was justified is up for debatebut I suspect that we both felt that such a one off opportunity shouldnot be missed.

At a time when the Co-op Bank is looking to close branches it appearsas though the Bank of Mum and Dad is ever growing.

In reality the outlays we make for our children now will have an impacton their lives for the next 50 years or so which if nothing else puts theprojected timescales for HS2 into perspective.

I for one would not like to try and budget our outlays on our childrenand grandchildren over the next 20 years or so but the commitmentto undertake the investment will remain. I doubt that a governmentbail-out will be available should demand outstrip supply.

If you have shorter term investment plans that need funding then feelfree to get in touch where we may not be as flexible as the Bank ofMum and Dad but we do lend for reasonable projects and rest assuredthat having funded your project, we will not remind you of this for thenext 20 years. We shall however expect a more concerted effort at arepayment plan than currentlyavailable to Mum and Dad.

A landmark business in Nantwich is enjoyinga new lease of life, thanks to cash supportfrom South Cheshire Chamber ofCommerce.

Manchester Airport is campaigning to improve connectivity withCrewe, its planning director has revealed.

Speaking at the Chamber’s annuallunch at Wychwood Park Hotel,John Twigg said an hourly trainfrom Crewe to the airport - thenumber one choice for Cheshiretravellers - was ‘poor’ andstrengthened the case for HS2 totake pressure off the railtimetable.

He outlined Manchester AirportGroup’s ambitious plans forgrowth including the £690mAirport City at Manchester which

will see offices, shops and high-tech businesses developed in theEnterprise Zone creating 15,000 jobs.

He echoed the comments of HS2 boss Alison Munro at theChamber’s annual dinner about the high-speed route being vital toease pressure on the over-crowded West Coast Main line.

He said: “History shows that train and transport links are at the coreof commerce so we are keen to see HS2 and other improvements.

“Airport services from Crewe are poor, just one an hour. HS2 takesLondon off the local network, freeing up travel space. For us it is notabout speed, but capacity and getting people to the airport.”

Chamber chief executive Paul Colman said: “A lot has been saidabout HS2 which the Chamber fully supports but we invited JohnTwigg to our luncheon to remind us about another great transportinterchange, not too far away, Manchester Airport.”

Why You Should BeNetworking OnlineSocial networking has alwaysbeen a great business asset.Just think back to the numberof jobs and businessopportunities you learnedabout through your friends andcolleagues. Online socialnetworking is no different.Worldwide Social networkslike LinkedIn are designedaround the business aspects ofsocial networking and arebeing used more and more byHR departments to locatetalented employees.

Closer to home, and catering to the business community ofSouth Cheshire, the Chamber Portal facilitates an onlinenetworking platform with a business focus for ChamberMembers. The online networking platform offers companiesand their employees a space for interaction, information-sharing, relationship-building and engagement with theChamber and other members of the local businesscommunity.

Social networks are also at the core of something called"social media marketing". This is a way of promoting yourproducts and services through social media sites like socialnetworks, blogs and other social platforms. If you run yourown business or even if you just sell a few bits and bobs oneBay every once in a while; having a social network presencecan help you reach out to and find your prospectivecustomers.

Social networking is particularly vital for entrepreneurs.Freelancers can find contacts via professional groups onLinkedIn and Twitter, while business owners can make use ofthe large user bases to market their products and services.

For small businesses starting off, they can also be used as afirst foray online, giving online visitors information about yourproducts and services, and as a way to attract new business.

Niche social networks such as the Chamber Portal aredesigned specifically for a particular interest group orcommunity and allow you to take advantage of the latestweb-based technologies to connect online.

Whether it’s the printers, the designers or thephotographers, local businesses have a long tradition ofsticking together — to share ideas, promote each other’scompanies and refer loyal customers. It is no different online.Using social networks businesses can link up with similarcompanies to share news and ideas, build relationships withcomplementary businesses while keeping an eye on yourcompetitors.

One topic that a lot ofconstituents write to me about isthe Government’s plan to capthe amount of benefits that aworkless household can receiveat £26,000.

The vast majority are verysupportive, and understand thelink between getting people inCrewe and Nantwich off benefitsand into work to improve boththeir lives and our localeconomy.

I realise too that some people are concerned about the policy, but I believe that the cap has been set at the right level. Thesystem we inherited from the last Government is not onlyunaffordable, but it has trapped some people in Crewe andNantwich in poverty.

Too many people were better off out of work and on benefits, than if they entered the world of work, and this created a cultureof entitlement and welfare dependency. It’s simply not fair thatbenefit claimants can receive higher incomes than families whoare in work.

In some cases this is more than double the average householdincome, and in extreme circumstances, up to £104,000. That'swhy we've brought in a cap on benefits, so that no family can getmore on benefits than the average family does by going out towork.

Importantly the benefit cap will not affect the disabled or thosewho are in work and receive working tax credits.

However, there has to be a limit on the amount of money benefitclaimants can receive, and I believe that the current limit iscurrently set at a fair rate of £26,000, which, as any employerknows, is the equivalent to someone earning £35,000 before tax.

This is a salary that many working families would be happy toreceive, and underlines the point that hard working peopleshould not pay their taxes in order to support people who refuseto work. The good news is that our local economy has improveddramatically.

The number of businesses in the North West has increased by46,395 in the last three years, and there are now fewer than 2,000people claiming Jobseekers Allowance in Crewe and Nantwich -something we haven't seen since January 2009.

This figure dropped a staggering 14.4% in the last year to October.

Youth unemployment has also dropped 17.6% in the last year, andhas outstripped the overall rate of unemployment reductionlocally.

So with unemployment in the constituency dropping almost aquarter since the last Government left office, and a strong policyon welfare, I believe we are getting our local economy back ontrack for the success it deserves.

It is also thanks in no small part to our local businesses steppingup to the plate that business confidence and employment aregrowing.

BUSINESS AWARDS 2013

The only way is up!South Cheshire Chamber Business Award2013 - another great nightSouth Cheshire is on the cusp of a bright economic future after surviving therecession better than most.

This message of optimism was warmly applauded at the Chamber’s 17th annualBusiness Awards which drew a record 240 guests to Crewe Hall.

Chamber Chairman, John Dunning, said: “For once I can say there is betternews on the economic front.

“The economy is coming out of recession, unemployment is down and businessconfidence is returning.

“South Cheshire continues to perform well with lots of success stories.

“Although some elements may be controversial, the Chamber fully supportsthe growth agenda and believes South Cheshire can become an economicpower house.

“As a business community working through the Chamber, we have a key roleto play in driving the growth agenda forward - after all, it is the private sectorthat will generate wealth and create the jobs that will be needed.”

The area, he added, would need to lead from the front. “Although we work inpartnership with them, we cannot rely on Cheshire East Council, MarketingCheshire, the LEP or the Government to have South Cheshire at the top oftheir agenda.

“The only agenda which we can be sure of being top of is our own. Our destinyis in our own hands. We are the stakeholders, the ones with the greatest vestedinterest. We know the area better than anyone else.

“South Cheshire has a proud history but seems to have somehow lost itsidentity and pride in recent years. Our challenge is to create somethingeveryone can be proud of again. So let’s all pull together for a better future forour area.”

Local businesses could be justifiably proud of their achievements. The awardsevening highlighted a tremendous talent base, particularly among youngentrepreneurs.

Full of high drama and surprises, the event produced some great tales oftriumph and determination in a difficult climate.

A Crewe-based recruitment group has launched a new

company filling vacancies for registered nursing staff,

support workers and care assistants.

Absolute Health and Care will provide recruitment

support for local authorities, private healthcare

providers and social care providers in North and South

Cheshire as well as Shropshire.

Setting up the new, standalone company is another

ambitious move by the Absolute Group which already

has four recruitment companies in the region. It

brought in an experienced healthcare recruitment

manager and a registered nurse to get Absolute Health

and Care off the ground.

Absolute Group’s managing director Jessica Marshall

said that the healthcare sector was the next logical step

in the group’s expansion because there was a gap in

the market for a recruitment partner for healthcare

providers.

“Our core values of a personal service are reflected in

our mantra, “it's all about people”, and this has helped

us to set all the companies in the absolute Group apart

in what are very competitive fields,” she said. “And

we saw an opportunity to do exactly the same in the

healthcare sector.

“We’re building an expert, professional and

dependable service which supports local authorities,

private healthcare providers and social care providers

by making available a recruitment resource for

qualified and registered nursing staff, support workers

and care assistants for all grades.

“We take the time to provide exactly the right people

in roles ranging from general or mental healthcare to

supporting people in areas including learning

disabilities and independent living.”

Colin Porter and Claire Robinson will head up the

team that is initially based at Absolute Group’s main

office on High Street in Crewe.

The new company has already secured a number of

contracts will local healthcare providers and has a

rigorous screening process for potential candidates

interested in full-time and temporary positions in line

with Care Quality Commission (CQC) and Nursing

and Midwifery Council (NMC) guidelines – as well as

conducting advanced Disclosure and Barring Service

(DBS) checks.

Mrs Marshall, who runs the company with husband

and fellow director Dan, is predicting great things of

the new venture that brings to five, the number of

firms owned by the Absolute Solutions Group - which

also includes Absolute Recruitment and Summit

Executive Search in Crewe, Meadowbank Associates

in Nantwich and Bralin Recruitment in Winsford.

She added: “We’re very excited about Absolute

Health and Care because we’re introducing the way

we want to run recruitment service to the healthcare

sector and it’s a formula that has served us very well.”

One of the biggest challenges currently faced by businesses isensuring that there are enough work-ready young people to fillthe gaps in our workforces. Yet with one million young peopleout of work, employers’ perceptions of young people can be amajor hurdle to employment.

The CBI reports that 81% of SMEs are not confident that school-leavers possess the right level of employability skills.

Fortunately, there are organisations which can help. One suchorganisation is Career Academies UK, a charity building bridgesbetween employers and young people seeking work.

The charity provides a programme of internships and mentoringfor 16-19 year old students around the UK, many fromdisadvantaged backgrounds. Indeed, 4,000 employee volunteersfrom over 1,400 organisations, both large and small, around theUK contribute time and skills to the Career Academy programme.

Members of the South Cheshire Chamber can impact positivelyon local young people by supporting the Business CareerAcademy centre at South Cheshire College in the following ways:

• Become a Partner in Business - employees act as a rolemodel, critical friend and advisor to a student over twoacademic years. This also helps the employee developtheir own coaching, mentoring and leadership skills.

· Become an active member of a Local Advisory Board- this is an opportunity for employees to engagemeaningfully with the world of education, influence youngpeople’s learning and to extend their networks.

· Deliver Guru Lectures to students - this can improve aperson’s presentation skills. Even chief executives reportthat speaking to inquisitive young people can be achallenge!

· Offer a six-week paid internship to a Career Academystudent - businesses not only offer the student a ‘windowon work’ but they also benefit themselves from atalented young person doing a real job within theircompany.

· Be an Internship supervisor and gain practicalexperience in managing and coaching a young person.

How will my organisation benefit?

Career Academies UK recently commissioned some researchwith employers.100 senior managers in 85 companies wereconsulted about their experiences of working with 16-19 yearolds and the results were surprisingly positive.

By engaging with young people, organisations stated that they hadbecome better connected with their communities andcustomers, improved their marketing to young people andopened up new talent streams.

As a sign of the recovering economy Tebbitts& Co in Crewe has received a number ofenquiries for terms and conditions to bereviewed to ensure they are fit for purpose

to take advantage of the good times ahead.

T&Cs should set out when a supplier shouldbe paid, the basis of how the pay iscalculated, commencement and duration ofthe contract and other obligationsdependent on the type of business.

Commercial law specialist Max Tebbittsexplains: “Standard T&Cs, if used correctly, are fundamental to income generation. Theyshould provide a framework for day-to-dayoperations as well as contractual protection.

“The advantages of using standard T&Cs arethat they provide a framework andtransparency for transactions. They save timeand money in negotiations, can enhance abargaining position, improve efficiency (with

standard terms and procedures and withtraining, more junior staff can concludetransactions) and manage risk andresponsibility.

“The disadvantages of using standard T&Csare that they can restrict the ability of partiesto limit liability as they are often not subjectto negotiation. Consumer terms requirespecial consideration as there is a greaterrisk that limitations of liability may notcomply with consumer regulations.”
