Welcome and Thank You

Welcome and thank you for your interest in the third Annual Wildcat 100 Ultramarathon, a 50k, 100k and 100 mile run on a 2.5 mile loop course through lovely Escambia County Equestrian Center park in Pensacola, Florida. Having hosted several high school cross country races including the 2A District 1 Championships, Gulf Coast Stampede and the Esca-Rosa Panhandle Championships, it is only fitting that the Escambia County Equestrian Center is the home of the Wildcat Ultras. It is a very spectator friendly course, and really geared towards endurance running. We created the inaugural event as a fundraiser to support the Booker T. Washington High School Cross Country teams. We decided to change the date and location moving forward and show off a little bit of Pensacola in the glory of Florida summer. It's a beautiful time of year in Florida and the Equestrian Center provides some beautiful scenery as well as challenging heat and humidity over the Labor Day weekend. It is our hope that the extended length of time – forty hours – and the looping aspect of a 2.5 mile course over a 50k, 100k or 100 mile creates an encouraging environment for all runners, as well as providing adequate aid frequency for potential new ultra runners. Thank you to you the runners and all our volunteers. Without you these two groups of people, there would be no race. A big thank you to Escambia County and the Equestrian Center for allowing us to use the trails and facilities. And thank you to our 2016 sponsors: SmartyPants Vitamins, Fitletic, Bodyworks by Bull Therapeutic Massage, Orange Mud, Bagel Heads and Hammer Nutrition.

Rules and Other Legalese

The Escambia County Equestrian Center were kind enough to allow us to use the Park, please be respectful of the park and others using it. There will be a garbage can set up at the start/finish area. The course is only 2.5 miles long, please, if you need to make garbage somewhere along the way, hold onto it and dispose of it at the start/finish. There will also be bathrooms along the running route/course, and showers are available on the south end of the arena. Please bring your own towels and toiletries. The park will remain open to the public during the day. Please be mindful of others using the park. If you come up on a walker, be polite and give them plenty of heads up that you are coming. “On your left,” “on your right,” “track,” all work great. This is an Equestrian Center, so you may even see a horse or two over the weekend, please be mindful of the horses and riders.

Parking

When you turn into the Escambia Equestrian Center you will see the sign listed above in the picture. Once you have made the turn into the Equestrian Center you can either go right or left at the "T" intersection. Turning left will take you to the paved parking lot that is located near the arena, concession stand and bathrooms. This is where the start/finish line will be located. Turning right at the “T” intersection will take you to the same parking as last year within the "grass island" that runs along the power lines. Parking here will give you direct access to your vehicle during the race as the course runs through the middle of the "grass island." If you choose to park within the “grass island” please park straight in with either your front or back bumper facing the roping that sections the grass island from the paved loop.

The Course

(map and elevation charts included below)

The start/finish line and main aid station will be located next to the RV parking lot, and in between the two huge power lines on the grass lot. The total course distance is a 2.50 mile loop through the Equestrian park, and includes minimal elevation loss/gain.

Revised 10/7/2016 8

Runner’s will start off heading towards the main office building on the east side of the park, continue south towards the entrance, and loop around the front pond clockwise. Proceed along side the paved road heading back to the main office. Continue past the main office building and loop around the back side of the pond near the neighborhood fence, follow the route into the woods. The one mile mark will be a few feet past the entrance into the woods. Runner’s will continue through the woods, and make a right turn once they are out of the woods onto the power line road. Stay straight on the power line dirt road until you reach the intersection, and turn right to complete the small loop on the west end of the park. Proceed back down the power line dirt road, and about halfway down you will see the right turn to go into the woods. As you are coming out of the woods, you will see the kids park in front of you, turn left and run along the wooden fence, veer slightly towards the right as you reach the pond and briefly continue through the woods, which will take you towards the arena. Run along side the arena, make a right turn, you will see the bathrooms on your right. Once you are a few feet past the bathrooms, make a left turn and run along side the white wooden fence towards the paved road. Once you are on the paved road, turn right onto the grass and continue past the start/finish line in between the two power lines.

Course Marking

We will be out marking the course Friday evening with paint, ribbons, and signs. Feel free to join us on Friday for the course marking, details to follow on our Facebook page. Each turn will be clearly marked, and all questionable turns and intersections will be blocked off, along with directional arrows to point the way. There will also be signs set up for the 1 mile and 2 mile mark.

Aid Station/Drop Bag

As this is a two and a half mile loop, there will only be one aid station, the start/finish line. There will be plenty of ice, Hammer Nutrition, and water. There will be some fruit – bananas, maybe some oranges – some Swedish Fish, M&Ms, pretzels, gummy bears, hard boiled eggs, and boiled potatoes. We have scheduled breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast on Saturday will be provided by Bagel Heads and will consist mainly of bagels. Lunch will be provided courtesy of Julie Thompson, and her famous ultra running chili will be served. We will have pizza delivered for Dinner, and we will also make some grilled cheese sandwiches. During the later hours we will have warm soup, coffee, and hot chocolate. Please also note, this is a cup free event. Bring your own water bottles – please. You may leave your drop bag(s) next to the start/finish line. We plan to have a separate tent/canopy set up strictly for runners’ gear along with a few chairs which will provide shade from the sun and heat.

Cautions

This is a running event, on trails. Some of it is nice and easy carriage trail, some a little gnarly with roots and rocks. Some trails have uneven embankments; there might be a water crossing. Use your best judgment and be careful. The park is open to the public. People have dogs. According to park rules, dogs must be leashed. Every runner knows, this isn't always the case. If you see a loose dog, again, use your best judgment. Tell someone at the start/finish when you come back through and we'll see what we can do about it. This is a wild space. There will be animals, possibly a snake, some squirrels and a few birds. However, there are also insects and I was asked to remind folks that September is horsefly season. Lastly, it will most likely be very hot and humid, please carry a water bottle or camel bag throughout the day to stay hydrated.

Medical/Injury Issues

If you are experiencing any medical issues, please let us know and take a break. We will have some amateur medical staff on hand, my sister is a certified EMT, so it’s totally legit, but any serious issues will be directed to either the Sacred Heart Hospital or Baptist Hospital. Please use your best judgment. Don't hurt yourself. Know when to stop.

Camping

The Equestrian Center has RV parking, and the cost is $20.07 per day (includes tax, water, and electrical hook up). Free tent camping will be provided for runners in the riding arena. While there are electrical outlets, please understand these are not for our use. If you use one of these outlets you will be charged the RV fee of $20.07. Please note that the Equestrian Center does not accept credit cards and there is not an ATM on site.

Amenities/Post-race

You’ll find that Pensacola welcomes the entire family with attractions as varied as exploring pre-Civil War brick fortresses and hands-on history museums to riding go-karts or splashing around Pensacola’s waterpark. The National Naval Aviation Museum, among the largest in the world, features 150 vintage aircraft, flight simulators and an IMAX Theater. The Country Inn & Suites by Carlson Pensacola West is located at 2607 Wilde Lake Boulevard, Pensacola, Florida and approximately 3.3 miles from the Equestrian Center. Prices typically range from $125 to $150 per night. The post-race party will continue all weekend! We will be handing out finisher awards as runners complete the 50k, 100k and 100 mile run. Crew and pacers are more than welcome to help themselves to the aid station food and drinks. We will also have plenty of beer! If you would like to take a shower they are on-site, located on the south end of the arena. Please bring your own towels and toiletries.

For the Kids

If you’re not feeling adventurous and not interested in venturing into downtown Pensacola, the Beulah Kids Park is located next to the Escambia Equestrian Center, and features a playground, swings, basketball court, dog park, and pavilion with picnic tables.
