able to practise their faith in full freedom.

Building a Christ-centred community of Love and Mercy

The year of Fr Francis Jordan, founder of the

Salvatorians. Sept 2017 - Sept 2018 Avoid long and useless pondering over your mistakes; because it is a loss of your time, discourages you and confuses your mind and heart. Humiliate yourself and regret your mistakes as soon as you notice them; and, having done this, leave them aside and continue your way.

A warm welcome to our parishioners and visitors who are celebrating the Eucharist

with us this weekend at Pymble Parish.

Back to School: Prayer for the Start of the School Year

Loving God, Our creator, our saviour,

our companion,

bless this journey of a new school year

that we undertake today.

Refresh our souls

and renew our spirits

as we embrace the beautiful ministry

you have called us to.

We welcome those who are new to this

community and ask that you

strengthen them to share the

wonderful gifts you have given them.

Lord, make our hearts pure as we

prepare for the return of students to

this school,

and may you guide them to return with

open hearts and minds eager to learn.

We ask this in Your name,

Amen

Bible Study: In Sacred Scripture, the Church constantly finds her nourishment and

her strength, for she welcomes it not as a human word, “but as what it really is, the

word of God.”67 “In the sacred books the Father who is in heaven comes lovingly to

meet his children and talks with them.”68 (CCC104). Join us each Friday morning

from 10.00am - 11am in the Sacred Heart meeting room, as we reflect on and

explore the Word of God for the coming Sunday. All very welcome. Fr. Greg

“Jesus, your word is power and life. May I never doubt your love and mercy, and the power of your word that

sets us free, and brings healing and restoration to body, mind, heart, and spirit."

This Sundays Readings 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Entrance Antiphon

Save us, O Lord our God!

And gather us from the nations,

to give thanks to your holy name,

and make it our glory to praise you.

First Reading Dt 18:15-20

A reading from the book of

Deuteronomy

I will put my words into the prophet’s mouth, and

he will tell them all I command.

Moses said to the people: ‘Your God will raise up

for you a prophet like myself, from among your-

selves, from your own brothers; to him you must

listen. This is what you yourselves asked of the

Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the As-

sembly. “Do not let me hear again” you said

“the voice of the Lord my God, nor look any

longer on this great fire, or I shall die”; and the

Lord said to me, “All they have spoken is well

said. I will raise up a prophet like yourself for

them from their own brothers; I will put my

words into his mouth and he shall tell them all I

command him. The man who does not listen to

my words that he speaks in my name, shall be

held answerable to me for it. But the prophet

who presumes to say in my name a thing I have

not commanded him to say, or who speaks in

the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.”’

Responsorial Psalm

(R.) If today, you hear his voice,

harden not your hearts.

1. Come, ring out our joy to the Lord;

hail the rock who saves us.

Let us come before him, giving thanks,

with songs let us hail the Lord. (R.)

2. Come in, let us kneel and bend low;

let us kneel before the God who made us

for he is our God and we

the people who belong to his pasture,

the flock that is led by his hand. (R.)

3. O that today you would listen to his voice!

‘Harden not your hearts as at Meribah, as on

that day at Massah in the desert when your fa-

thers put me to the test; when they tried me,

though they saw my work.’ (R.)

Second Reading 1 Cor 7:32-35

A reading from the first letter of St Paul

to the Corinthians

The unmarried woman dedicates herself to the

things of the Lord, that she might be holy.

I would like to see you free from all worry. An

unmarried man can devote himself to the

Lord’s affairs, all he need worry about is pleas-

ing the Lord; but a married man has to bother

about the world’s affairs and devote himself to

pleasing his wife: he is torn two ways. In the

same way an unmarried woman, like a young

girl, can devote herself to the Lord’s affairs; all

she need worry about is being holy in body and

spirit. The married woman, on the other hand,

has to worry about the world’s affairs and de-

vote herself to pleasing her husband. I say this

only to help you, not to put a halter round your

necks, but simply to make sure that everything

is as it should be, and that you give your undi-

vided attention to the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia!

A people in darkness have seen a great light:

a radiant dawn shines on those lost in death.

Alleluia!

Gospel Mk 1:21-28

A reading from the holy Gospel

according to Mark

This is a new kind of teaching that speaks

with authority.

Jesus and his followers went as far

as Capernaum, and as soon as

the Sabbath came Jesus went to the syna-

gogue and began to teach. And his teaching

made a deep impression on them because, un-

like the scribes, he taught them with authority.

In their synagogue just then there was a man

possessed by an unclean spirit, and it shouted,

‘What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth?

Have you come to destroy us? I know who you

are: the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus said sharp-

ly, ‘Be quiet! Come out of him!’ And the un-

clean spirit threw the man into convulsions and

with a loud cry went out of him. The people

were so astonished that they started asking

each other what it all meant. ‘Here is a teach-

ing that is new’ they said ‘and with authority

behind it: he gives orders even to unclean spir-

its and they obey him.’ And his reputation rap-

idly spread everywhere, through all the sur-

rounding Galilean countryside.

Reflection

Do you believe that God's word has power to set

you free and to transform your life? When Jesus

taught he spoke with authority. He spoke the

word of God as no one had spoken it before.

When the Rabbis taught they supported their

statements with quotes from other authorities.

The prophets spoke with delegated authority -

"Thus says the Lord." When Jesus spoke he need-

ed no authorities to back his statements. He was

authority incarnate - the Word of God made flesh.

When he spoke, God spoke. When he command-

ed even the demons obeyed.

Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) remarked that

"faith is mighty, but without love it profits noth-

ing. The devils confessed Christ, but lacking chari-

ty it availed nothing. They said, 'What have we to

do with you' (Mark 1:24)? They confessed a sort

of faith, but without love. Hence they were dev-

ils."

Faith is both a free gift of God and the free assent

of our will to the whole truth that God has re-

vealed. To live, grow, and persevere in the faith

to the end, we must nourish it with the word of

God. The Lord gives us his Holy Spirit to enlighten

our minds that we may grow in his truth and in

the knowledge of his great love for each of us. If

we approach God's word with trust and submis-

sion, and with an eagerness to do what the Lord

desires for us, then we are in a much better posi-

tion to learn what God wants to teach us through

his word. Are you eager to be taught by the Lord

and to conform your mind, heart, attitude, and

intentions according to his word of truth, good-

ness, and love?
