Why Membership Matters

As the new school year unfolds, we find ourselves looking to the resources

that NASN provides for guidance and to updates that might be available for

our practice. School nurses have many roles to fulfill and help build the

foundation for student health and education.

There are approximately 16,000 NASN members. Imagine how we can

expand the sphere influence of school nursing, like the stone in the water, if

each one of us recruited one new member.

Just as the healthcare climate is evolving, so is

NASN as the credible source for information for

school nurses. The NASN Back-to-School Toolkit is

a tool that school nurses can use to help support

the health and well-being of children and families.

The toolkit is loaded with checklists for school

nurses and parents, clinical practice guidelines, and information about

advocating for students and their families.

Lots of Head Lice info that can be used by school nurses is available on the

NASN website!

Through NASN and its partner relationships, you have access to journal

article podcasts (The Journal of School Nursing and NASN School Nurse),

Sight for Students gift certificates, NASN Radio broadcasts, SchoolNurseNet

community website, discounts for professional liability insurance, webinars,

and current position documents, just to name a few benefits. Browse

NASN.org and see for yourself.

National School Nurse Data Set – Step Up and Be Counted Continues 2015-2016 SY

During the last school year, about 36 submissions – consisting of public school districts or

individual schools – (private or parochial) in Rhode Island reported data about staffing,

students, and nurse dispositions of student encounters to the National School Nurse Dataset

(also known as Step Up and Be Counted). This project is a joint endeavor of the National

Association of School Nurses (NASN) and the National Association of State School Nurse

Consultants. The preliminary results were shared at the national school nurse conference

in June in Philadelphia.

You are all aware of the need to have evidence on the important role school nurses play in

the health and education of students, and the data should lead to support funding for school

health offices and personnel.

The data to be collected is minimal and should not be time consuming.

This school year all the data will not be submitted until the end of the year.

1. Staffing data: student enrollment, health office staffing

2. Student data: number of students with diagnosis of

a. Asthma

b. Type 1 diabetes

c. Type 2 diabetes

d. Seizure disorder

e. Life threatening allergy

3. Basic outcome of nurse (RN, LPN/LVNs, and health extenders if applicable) visits:

a. Students returned to class

b. Students sent home

c. Students for whom 911 or equivalent emergency service was called

Please go to https://www.nasn.org/Research/StepUpBeCounted for more information on the

project. On that page, there is a formula-filled spreadsheet with which you can keep

tallies, especially helpful if you do not have computer software programs to capture the

information. Data on student encounters needs to be collected frequently, to keep up, but

no data needs to be submitted now. Start using the spreadsheets, read the FAQ (Q&A) if

needed, and feel free to contact me at [email protected] if help is needed. The

form on which to report Rhode Island data will be available later this year with a timeline.

The link below will take you to a webinar with more information and can be found

Advocacy/Legislative Committee

Welcome back to another School Year!!! We look forward to another healthy, productive school

year providing exceptional health services to our students.

The General Assembly is in recess now and the new legislative session opens in January 2016. At

that time, the legislative committee will be monitoring activity in the House and Senate and

keeping a watchful eye on issues that may affect the health and safety of our schoolchildren as

well as our professional careers. You are invited to peruse the General Assembly website,

www.rilin.state.ri.us which is full of information. You can look up the status of recent and pending

legislation and easily determine the name and other contact information of your state representative

and senator. Or perhaps you are interested in state leaders in the community where you work.

Take some time to browse the site; it is quite informative and interesting. If desired, you can also

access the General Assembly site by using the link on the RICSNT webpage.

We are here to serve you and are always happy to listen to any legislative concerns you may have.

Please do not hesitate to contact one of us or a member of the RICSNT Executive Board. Contact

information can be found on the RICSNT website.

Respectfully,

Deborah Svitil

Marilyn Mattera

Legislative Co-Chairs

Public Relations RICSNTA is working towards a collaboration with Hasbro Hospital. In the future, we are hoping to offer skills labs for such procedures as gastrostomy tube feeding, catheterization, tracheostomy care etc. Stay tuned as we explore our options. Let us know if you have any requests or suggestions.

Nominating Committee

If you have an interest in learning how your state board functions, enjoy networking with other

SNTs, or wish to help with a specific committee, we would be happy to have you attend a

meeting and see how your board works. Please contact any board member for dates and

location of meetings.

Treasurer’s Report

We moved to electronic record keeping for RICSNTA in 2014 and are using Quick Books

for recording banking for our checking and savings account. We continue to use Citizens

Bank for our banking needs and are no longer receiving mailed statements, which cuts down

on fees charged. As you are all aware, we now use PayPal for membership and registration

for conferences. Hopefully that is running smoother than when we initially started with

the New England Conference we hosted in May of 2014. The glitches are being worked out

with the help of Diane Kowal and Web Electronics who work together on our website.

We were granted a certificate of exemption for state taxes on February 27. 2015 and are

officially considered a nonprofit organization.
