Here you are, taking one more step towards the dream, a new start is a new chance, use it well …
Personally, my experience wasn’t perfect, that’s to say, so I’ll explain the good part only, beginning by the question… what should I gain in this year? And what goals to achieve?
For me:
1. Learn, be a better scientist. 2. Meet new people, friends and acquaintances. 3. Feel with people, be a better HUMAN.
That’s in a brief, now moving to practical details…
The 1st course to start with: Clinical and communication skills (MED411)
- Credit hours: 9. - Grading: 20% evaluation, 80% final MCQ exam. - Reference: Macleod’s clinical examination.
Duties: 4 weeks; - Week 1: Lectures from 8 am to 3 pm, in the red hall, about clinical skills for organ systems
(history taking and physical examination). Make sure to make benefit out of these lectures as they’ll be your reference for the rest of the year.
- Week 2: 8 am – 12 pm: Departments duties (to be explained later on). 1 pm – 3 pm: Lectures in the red hall, describing in brief the specialties to be studied in later years.
- Week 3 & 4: Only department duties form 8 am to 12 pm.
** Department duties (to be applied to all clinical courses):
Internal medicine and Surgery:
8:00-10:00 : Write a case; Apply learned knowledge during the first week by writing down a clinical history of a patient from the desired department.
10:00-12:00 : Instructor physician comes by and holds an open discussion about written cases, there is no specific material to cover.
Pediatrics:
8:00-9:00 morning report; a case presented by 6th year students is discussed, or a specific topic is discussed with seniors.
9:00-10:00 : Write a case.
10:00-12:00 : Instructor physician comes by and holds an open discussion about written cases, there is no specific material to cover.
7
- Grading:
Evaluation gives 20% of the grade, given principally upon attendance, attendance is very important during the following year as a whole.
Final exam: 80%; MCQ exam, and here’s …
- how to prepare:
the Package: a full package of sheets already written and sheets to be written by your batch, this
is most important, make sure to finish it, start studying it from week 1, very useful for other academic purposes along with exam purposes.
Macleod’s: A very valuable book, whether for this course itself or for subsequent courses (internal
and pediatrics), try to accomplish as much of it as you can, CVS, RS and GIS being your priority areas.
Past papers: Can’t be over-emphasized; for the whole 4th year and later, try to comprehend
questions and information mentioned among them.
MED411 Summary: attend all course, study the package, Past papers, Macleod’s and get the most out of it!

- You can refer to “surgical recall” for surgery and “Kaplan internal medicine” for Medicine.

* It’s extremely easy to pass, never easy to excel! Determine your goal and GO!
