· "Know ye not, there is a great prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel!"

It is the age-old cry-the age-old lamentation. So it has been since first the sun of human history silvered the dawn of the world, and so it will ever be until the end of time.

Nothing that we can say or hear in this chamber, where he was in his day a forceful character, can add to the· immutability and finality of dE-ath. His work is d<>ne. It is recorded today in the history, the politics, the statutes and the affections of the state in which he lived and died, and which h e loved so well. His record is not ours to relate to the people of Iowa, for he has left his own record to that end. He was one of the last of the old oaks; sturdy, steadfast and true to all in which he believed and held convictions. Orie of the last of the two sturdy generations that ,... -<ie Iowa--consistent in all t hat he believed; courageous to fight for

Jelief and never faltering in t he faith of his convictions. The landmarks of the formative days of our commonwealth are being lost, and growing·dim and formless in t he march of time. He was one of them, au d the call has come to him. H is work is ended. Those that he battled with respected him, those that fought on his siqe loved him. He has fuught the good fight. He has finished his course and he has kept the faith as he conceived that faith. No honest man could do· more for his fellow citizens that he loved- and nothing is greater than an honest man. If, in another world to which his soul has passed, fidelity to conscientious cGnvictions is honored, and faith and friendship is a virtue, then all is well with him. He has left our state his debtor. In his passing into the inscrutable mysteries of the life hereafter-Hail and Farewell!

Now, Therefm·e, Be. It Resolved, That ·a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the Journal of the Senate. and that the secretary be directed to send an engrossed copy thereof to the family of the deceaesd.

MR. PRESIDENT: Your committee which was appointed to prepare resolutions commemorating the life, character, and public servi!!es of Senator Charles H. Thomas, late of Union county, Iowa, begs leave to submit the following report:

<;harles H. Thomas was born near Roseville, Warren county, Illinois, he 29th day of September, 1860. His parents, Matthew and Ernaline

'1·nomas, were of Welsh and Scotch descent and with them he removed to Union county, Iowa, when he was fifteen years of age.

In 1876 the family moved to Cromwell, Iowa, where ne completed his

In 18!ll 1\Ir. Thvmas upened a han..iwart !;tore in Creston, and four :!:ears lattt· remo,·ed to Kent to 1: 1ogage in the lumber and hadware business. He was vice president of the Kent Savings Bank a nd president of the ' 'Blue Gra!;S Road,'' crossing Iowa from Burlington to Council Bluffs, ::aving both originated and named this highway.

Mr. Thomas was active in republican politics of !his district for many years. He was elected to the stnte Senate in 1 !.113 a nd was a member of the T h irty-fifth and Thirty-sixth General Assemblies. He ''' as appointed by Governor Kendall as a member of the state boaxd of education, ably serving in the capacity of vice president of this ()rganization. Three years ago he was appointed postmaster of Creston, Iowa .

Charles Thomas wa,; a great student. H e had an indovnitable determination to do well, that which he undertook. He was fair, straightforward and always upon the right side in ~::very moral and economic quest;on. He was a t i<·eless worker, a faithful friend, an upright and respected citizen in the community in which he livecii_ ~o Oll1e can fill his place. He speaks in !i1·es made bettet·-in works d o ne that will stand out ~~s time goes on. It may be truly said of him as \'\' att put it

I have ne,·:ver known a better body of men than the present Senate of Iowa or one · that worked more faithfully for t he welfare of all persons concerned. ·Those that have gone before are but like those that stay. Lincoln witf.R his greatness was great because he was so much like the men of his anvn type. He was a typical man of his time. So it is with the Senators of this body. They were typical men of their time. They were given greatly to the doctrine of service, and I am reminded tonight that, "A des3tiny makes us all brothers. None may go his way alone and what we bri"ing to the lives of others must come back again to our own."

Charles H. Thomas married Jemima 1. Brown.

Member of the State Board of Education , was born in Warren county, Illinois, September 29, 1860, of Welsh and Scotch parentage. The father served in the Mexican war under General Zachary Taylor, a blood relative of the mother of this sketch. Mathew and Emaline Thomas moved to Union county, Iowa, in 1876 and the son completed his education in the Cromwell public school. A twenty he left the farm to enter business and has been actively engaged in mercantile life since, twenty-one years of it in lumber, hardware and banking at Kent, where he served ten years on the local school board. He first proposed the name and the route of the "Blue Grass Trail" across Iowa from Burlington to COucil Bluffs. Represented Union, Ringgold and Decatur counties in the state senate 1913 to 1917. Author of the original Iowa "blue sky law," "teachers' minimum wage law," the prohibitory amendment voted on in 1918. In an extremely close three-cornered contest in the primary in 1916 he barely missed the republican nomination for state treasurer. Removed to Creston in 1916, where he is the senior member of the Creston Hardware Co. and one of the leading business men of the city. Married in 1886 to Miss Jemima I. Brown. Four ch ildren, Grace E., Hobart M., Mary I. and Carnot H., make up the fami ly circle. A Methodist in church affiliation and an active republican in politics.
