Whether you are building a new home, renovating an existing one, or looking tomake a few changes in your living habits, every household can incorporate featuresthat support the conservation of theenvironment and improve our quality oflife. As environmental concerns continueto mount worldwide, integrating moresustainable practices and products intoour lives becomes increasingly important. There is growing popular interest in greenliving and the possibilities for achievingit in our homes are rapidly expanding.Because buildings consume enormousquantities of the Earth’s resources in theirconstruction and daily operation, theyrepresent tremendous opportunities forinnovative eco-friendly design as well ascost savings. The Green House demonstratesthe emerging collaboration between

stylish architecture, interior design, and environmentalresponsibility. Home is where going green begins—where we as individuals have the power to set anew course for a more sustainable future.

5Optimizing Use of the Sun

Most of us rely on oil, coal, natural gas, and other fossil fuelsto heat and cool our homes. Not only are these resourcesexpensive and polluting, they are also being rapidly depleted.A simple and cost-effective alternative is to plug your houseinto the sun by either active or passive strategies.

Active strategies use solar panels that turn the sun’s heatinto energy.

Adopting passive strategies means doing some of thefollowing:

Design and orient the house to minimize summer afternoonsolar heat gain and optimize winter solar heat gain. In thenorthern hemisphere, this means orienting the long sidesof the house to face south and north and creating roof over-hangs and landscaping that shade the east, south, and westsides of the house.

Situate the house to take advantage of prevailing breezesduring the spring, summer, and fall. Not only are thesebreezes valuable for cross-ventilation in the house, but theycan make screened-in rooms and porches more comfortableplaces to live.

Plant shade trees and shrubs around your house. In summer,well-placed foliage helps keep the house cool, while barebranches in winter let the sunlight through to warm the house.

The world’s oilreserves areexpected to last about 40more years.Natural gasreserves may last 67 years. The sun’s energysupply will last billions of years.

smart move Join thousands of others in turning to solar energyas a renewable, clean, and cost savingalternative to fossil fuels.

Improving Indoor Air QualityAmericans spend up to 90 percent of their time indoorswhere air quality can be more polluted than outdoors.Pollutants range from toxins, such as asbestos andformaldehyde found in building materials, to allergenssuch as mold, mildew, fungus, bacteria, and dust mites. The negative effects of these pollutants may cause healthproblems upon initial exposure or even many years later.

There are measures that can be taken to improve indoor air quality:

Choose ventilation systems that remove dirt, dust, moisture, humidity, and pollutants.

Seal off the garage from the house to eliminate fumes fromcars and lawn mowers.

Select materials, such as those without formaldehyde, that limit off-gassing, have minimal or no toxic properties, and do not shed dust or fiber.

Test your home for toxins that influence air qualitywith a do-it-yourself kit orhire a specialist.

Use the exhaust fan over your stove to remove gases like carbon monoxide. Use fans in the bathroom to removewater vapors that can cause molds to grow.

smart move Improve air quality inyour home by increasing ventilation, choosingnon-toxic materials, and using air filters to remove up to 95% of airborne pollutants.

Indoor air pollution consistentlyranks among the top five environmentalrisks to publichealth.

Using the Land Responsibly You can create a sustainable house by making good use ofthe land your house sits on and by considering the impact ofthe house on the surrounding environment. When lookingto buy a new home, consider the following advantages:

Buy a smaller, more compact house on a lot that is locatednear work, public transportation, and community servicesto save fuel and money.

Choose a neighborhood where houses are clustered closertogether, leaving more open space for residents to enjoy andhelping to preserve the natural landscape.

Adopt smart gardening practices like using organic pesticidesand composts, as well as native plants that do not requireextensive irrigation systems.

Use landscaping rather than paved surfaces, which impedestorm water infiltration, often resulting in the contaminationof local water sources.

Every yearsprawlingdevelopmentengulfs 1 million acres of open space.

smart move Vote to conservewilderness areas and support one of the240 anti-sprawl initiatives across America.

Creating High-Performance andMoisture-Resistant Houses

The roof, walls, windows, and doors of a house create anenvelope that protects residents from the weather andintruders, including pests, noise, and dirt. It also controls theentry of sunlight and, most importantly, helps maintainindoor comfort. Maintaining a constant level of comfort isoften wasteful and expensive but can be done efficientlyand economically by the following means:

Create a building envelope with more durable and energy-efficient materials that reduce drafts, balance roomtemperatures, control moisture, and save on heating andcooling costs.

Seal any gaps or cracks where moisture can get in and heator cooling can leak out.

Schedule a home energy audit. Many utilities offer them forfree and the expert advice can result in big energy savings.

According to recent estimates, theUnited Statesconsumes moreenergy than anyother nation, accounting for22.8% of theworld’s totalenergy use.Nearly onequarter of thatshare is usedto power our homes.

smart move By sealing air leaks and using energy-efficient technologies in your home, you can significantly reduce your energy consumption and cut your bills by up to 80%.

Wisely Using the Earth’s Natural Resources The earth provides us with a finite amount of natural resourcesand it is our responsibility to make them last. It is also up to usto use these resources in ways that are not detrimental to theenvironment or our health.

With the mainstreaming of sustainable design has come adramatic increase in new green materials and products. Suchgreen materials create houses that are good for their occupants’health and bank accounts, as well as the environment. Whetherbuilding a new house or apartment or renovating an existingone, green materials are essential. By building, renovating, andequipping your home with green materials, you can preservenatural resources such as old-growth forests and fresh watersystems. Selecting green materials typically involves an assessmentof a product’s environmental impact over its life cycle. This processtracks the raw materials used to make a product; its manufacturingprocess; its transportation; its performance when it is used; andits disposal, reuse, or recycling options. When choosing materialsand products look for:

High levels of:

Renewability

Reusability

Durability

Low levels of:

Embodied energy, the energy required to extract, process, and transport materials

Environmental impact, the negative effects on outdoor and indoor environments

smart move By choosing wood products certifiedby the international Forest Stewardship Council, you canhelp ensure that our ancient forests don’t disappear. Visitwww.fsc.org for more information.

Less than 20% of the world’s oldgrowth forestsremain today.

Environmental Ratings andCertifications are internationalprograms that have established sustainablility and efficiencystandards for buildings andproducts.Cradle-to-cradleCradle-to-cradle is a certification system, established by architect William McDonough, which evaluates products by measuringpositive impacts on the environment, humanhealth, and social equity. The term is also aphilosophy based on the idea that productsshould be designed so that when they areno longer useful, they provide fuel for newproducts or natural cycles, eliminating waste.www.mcdonough.com/cradle_to_cradle.htm

ENERGY STARThe ENERGY STAR program, managed by theEnvironmental Protection Agency (EPA) andthe Department of Energy (DOE), has provento be an effective tool to help consumerschoose energy-efficient products for theirhomes, preserving natural resources andlessening greenhouse gas emissions, as wellas reducing consumers’ energy bills. ENERGYSTAR labels can be found on appliances, televisions, heating and cooling equipment, electronics, and even new homes. A productor home with the ENERGY STAR label meansthat it meets the efficiency guidelines set bythe EPA and the DOE.

With the use of ENERGY STAR certifiedappliances, homes, and non-residentialbuildings, Americans saved 150 billion kilowatthours of electricity in 2005, or four percentof the national electricity demand. Theyalso reduced greenhouse gas emissionsequivalent to the amount generated everyyear by approximately 23 million gasoline-powered cars. Energy-efficient consumersalso save money; ENERGY STAR householdshave been found to save up to 30 percentannually on their energy bills.www.energystar.gov

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is anindependent, non-profit organization thatpromotes voluntary, third party certificationof sustainably-managed forests. FSC “certifiers”evaluate forests based on managementpractices in three areas: sustainable harvest, ecosystem health, and community benefits.Scientists and foresters examine and measurethe impact of forest practices on wildlife andtheir habitat, water quality, soil and plantconservation, natural forest sustainabilityand biodiversity, visual aesthetics, and thetotal ecological integrity of the forest. TheFSC logo on a product provides consumerswith an assurance that the wood they usecomes from forests managed in an environ-mentally and socially responsible manner.www.fscus.org

Not all Bamboo is the sameBamboo has become a very popular “green”material in recent years. It is often labeledas sustainable because it is a fast growinggrass—not wood—that can be harvestedin a few years instead of several genera-tions for most wood species. But it isworthwhile to also consider some otherfactors when selecting bamboo as a sus-tainable and healthy choice for your home.

Out of the over 1,200 species of bambooin existence, the Moso bamboo species(Phyllostachys h.pubescens) is the optimalchoice for use in plank floors. The bambooshould be properly aged and only themiddle section of each stalk should be usedto ensure appropriate strength and moisturecontent. Some bamboo plantations stilluse pesticides, chemical fertilizers, andother methods that endanger the localecosystem and workers. And some mayuse glues and sealants that off-gas intoyour room, impacting your family’s health. As well, they may not use precision millingto ensure proper construction and long-termperformance and may not dry the bambooappropriately. Check to see if the bamboosupplier you choose visits the plantationregularly for quality control and to mini-mize milling defects. Finally, consider alsothe bamboo's embodied energy, which isaffected by the resources utilized duringits travel from plantation to your home.

When shopping for bamboo flooring, inquire about the species, harvesting siteand practices, other materials used inmanufacturing, and production practicesto ensure your choice is of good qualityand is a truly sustainable product.

18ways to go green

1 Conserve energy by purchasing major appliances with anENERGY STAR rating and by adding timers and automatedthermostats to control usage. Also, consider switching tofluorescent light bulbs and adding more natural lightingwith additional windows or skylights.

2 Repair leaky fixtures and install low-flow showerheads and faucets.

3 Use water-based paints, finishes, and sealants. Some milk-based paints are also available.

4 Look for wall coverings that are made of paper or naturalfiber, rather than synthetic materials, and printed with natural inks.

5 Choose carpeting, rugs, window treatments and other textiles made from natural fibers, such as cotton or wool, which are untreated and free of toxins, such as pesticides or chemical cleaners.

6 Ask for flooring products made from rapidly renewableresources, such as bamboo or linoleum.

7 Select solid woods, when possible, for furniture or cabinetry, rather than pressed woods or composites that may containformaldehyde or other chemicals that may be toxic.

8 Reuse materials – such as brick, stone, glass, tile, or metal –in new and interesting ways. Old wood also can be safelytreated and used for accents.

9 Consider the “lifecycle” of furnishings and accessoriesbefore purchasing: Are they made of materials that can bereused or recycled when the item eventually wears out or isno longer needed?

Page 23: 5 18 58 - National Building Museumnationalbuildingmuseum.net/pdf/GH_GreenResourceGuide.pdf · Ways to Go Green 58 Innovative Green Building Products GREEN ... green materials create

10 Recycle packing and shipping materials from any newly purchased items, and safely dispose of paint cans and othercontainers whose contents could potentially contaminate the ground or water supply.

11 Install lights with sensors that turn on when they detectmovement and automatically turn off after a few minutes.

12 Do not let the water run when brushing your teeth or washing your face.

13 If every household in the US replaced 1 roll of 1,000 sheet bathroom tissues with 100% recyclable rolls, we could save373,000 trees, 1.48 million cubic feet of landfill space, and 155 million gallons of water.

14 Scrape – don’t rinse! When using a dishwasher, pre-rinsing isno longer necessary with today's technology and detergents. You may be using more water to pre-rinse than the dishwasheruses for a full wash cycle.

15 Check your refrigerator’s seal by closing the door with a litflashlight inside. If you see light seeping out, the door shouldbe adjusted or the seal replaced to stop energy leaks.

16 Buy locally produced products and materials whenever possibleto reduce additional energy use and pollution associated withtransportation.

17 Eliminate waste by choosing products that are biodegradableor recyclable.

18 Look for reclaimed wood products, salvaged from older structures and certified wood harvested from sustainablymanaged forests.
