THE AMERICAN ARTISTS PROFESSIONAL LEAeUE
F. Ballord Williams, AssI'Stant Treasurer of
the Nclt'lonal Acaclemy and former Pres'Ident Of the' salmagundi Club, both of which are locched in New York City, noted a need for cl ncltioncll orgclniZOtiOn tO fill the rapid devel-
opment of art 'lnterest in other large cities and distclnt areas Such aS California.
ln January l928, he called a meeting of fifteen members of the Salmagundi Club to discuss forming ``The Americcln Artists Profes- sional League." The majority attending were acodemicians such c]s Frank deHaven, Hobarf Nichols and Bruce Crane, "The American An'lsts Professioncll Leclgue'' becclme a reality
at that meeting with F. Bollard WilliclmS its first President, WI'lfOrd Conrow Secretary and Cordon Grant its Treasurer.
The first problems to be considered were the inferior manufacture of clrfiSrS Paint ancl obtaining commissions of official ponroits for American Anists. Too many European
painters were coming to Washington, D.C., clnd receiving commissions for official portraits while American Artists were neglected. Alberf T. Reid knew his way clrOund Washington, D.C. clnd persuaded a California Senator to ottoch a rider to c] Congressionc]l Bill. This
rider specified thclt all OffiCiCll POrfraitS, PCIid
for with taxpayers' money' were to be pclinted by American Artists. ''The American Artists ProfessioncII League," now referred to as the AAPL, achieved its first success, and tO this
dcly Our governments official porfroits in Washington, D.C., are painted by American Anists.
Wilford Conrow,s spec'lalty wc]s the chem- ical and physical purity of pigments, Through his efforts, a fund of $3500 was obtained
from the Cclrnegie Corporation Endowment Fund for a program of color pigment research. Dr. Morfin Fischer undertook the investigation ct the University of Cincinnati' lt was com-
pleted in l932, making the AAPL the COuntry'S authority On arfiSt'S PigmentS. The
AAPL was also instrumental in securing the U.S. Bureclu Of Standards' original set of
government-sponsored stc]ndards for arfist's. Colors. These stcmdards were updated in l962. All major manufcICturerS Of arfiSt'S Paint
followed AAPL standards, and to this dcly each tube of paint states: "Statement of contents c]s recommended by The American Artists Pro- fessional League." The AAPL was not-and is not-compensated in any way for these reeommendotions: It was and is done as a service to clll artists.
In l930 the AAPL founded ''American Air Week," and sponsored its observance nationally during the first week of November ecICh year. President Eisenhower applauded Our efforts With a telegram tO Our Office in
l959. Rising costs and diminishI'ng funds "made it necessary to discontinue this program in the early ,70s.
During the years between l930 and 195l, the AAPL published cl bi-Weekly
COlumn, in ART Dl6EST magazine, devoted to
solving problems for artists, giving news of members and such editorial comments and criticism as the AAPL wished to discuss. State Chapters were organized during this period and even included a chapter in Paris, France.
The decodes of l950, l960 and part of the ,70s sc]w an clrf world with drcIStiC Changes. Public and government tastes were in an era during which extremes, fads, shocks
and abstractions were getting the lion's share of government sponsorship/ grants of public money and media promotion. AAPL raised objections to these prcICtiCeS tO the highest levels of government at the White House, before Senate Committees, through lectures, radio broadcasts, rv appearances and in
publicc]tions. Eminent Artists who hove served the AAPL
in the past as Officers cmd Board Members include Dean Cornwell, LioneI Barrymore,
Roger Deering' Horvey Dunn and Frederic \^thitaker. To these and the mclny unnamed, we the present AAPL members give our scllutatiOnS and Our thanks.
The AAPL Grc]nd National Exhibitions have
always been for members only' and we were alwclyS fOrfunCIte tO acquire exhibition Space
gratis. Things began to change in l980 to a point where we spent most of our time scouring New York City for exhibition space. In l98l, after severc]l yec]rs of negotiations, we had a beautiful Grand National Exhibition CIt the exhibition gCIIlery of the Equitable Life
Assurance Society. The following year they were unc]ble to include the AAPL into their
exhibit schedule, and nothing else was availclble. After a review of the very few
galleries large enough for our Grand National Exhibitions, all of which had high rental fees, We Selected the Salmagundi Club, a beautiful Landmark Building on lower Fifth Avenue in
