THE AMERICAN ARTISTSPROFESSIONAL LEAeUE
F. Ballord Williams, AssI'Stant Treasurer of
the Nclt'lonal Acaclemy and former Pres'Ident Ofthe' salmagundi Club, both of which arelocched in New York City, noted a need for clncltioncll orgclniZOtiOn tO fill the rapid devel-
opment of art 'lnterest in other large cities anddistclnt areas Such aS California.
ln January l928, he called a meeting offifteen members of the Salmagundi Club todiscuss forming ``The Americcln Artists Profes-sional League." The majority attending wereacodemicians such c]s Frank deHaven, HobarfNichols and Bruce Crane, "The AmericanAn'lsts Professioncll Leclgue'' becclme a reality
at that meeting with F. Bollard WilliclmS itsfirst President, WI'lfOrd Conrow Secretary andCordon Grant its Treasurer.
The first problems to be consideredwere the inferior manufacture of clrfiSrS Paintancl obtaining commissions of official ponroitsfor American Anists. Too many European
painters were coming to Washington, D.C.,clnd receiving commissions for official portraitswhile American Artists were neglected. AlberfT. Reid knew his way clrOund Washington,D.C. clnd persuaded a California Senator toottoch a rider to c] Congressionc]l Bill. This
rider specified thclt all OffiCiCll POrfraitS, PCIid
for with taxpayers' money' were to be pclintedby American Artists. ''The American ArtistsProfessioncII League," now referred to as theAAPL, achieved its first success, and tO this
dcly Our governments official porfroits inWashington, D.C., are painted by AmericanAnists.
Wilford Conrow,s spec'lalty wc]s the chem-ical and physical purity of pigments, Throughhis efforts, a fund of $3500 was obtained
from the Cclrnegie Corporation EndowmentFund for a program of color pigment research.Dr. Morfin Fischer undertook the investigationct the University of Cincinnati' lt was com-
pleted in l932, making the AAPL theCOuntry'S authority On arfiSt'S PigmentS. The
AAPL was also instrumental in securing theU.S. Bureclu Of Standards' original set of
government-sponsored stc]ndards for arfist's.Colors. These stcmdards were updated inl962. All major manufcICturerS Of arfiSt'S Paint
followed AAPL standards, and to this dcly eachtube of paint states: "Statement of contents c]srecommended by The American Artists Pro-fessional League." The AAPL was not-and isnot-compensated in any way for thesereeommendotions: It was and is done as aservice to clll artists.
In l930 the AAPL founded ''American AirWeek," and sponsored its observancenationally during the first week of NovemberecICh year. President Eisenhower applaudedOur efforts With a telegram tO Our Office in
l959. Rising costs and diminishI'ng funds"made it necessary to discontinue this programin the early ,70s.
During the years between l930 and195l, the AAPL published cl bi-Weekly
COlumn, in ART Dl6EST magazine, devoted to
solving problems for artists, giving news ofmembers and such editorial comments andcriticism as the AAPL wished to discuss. StateChapters were organized during this periodand even included a chapter in Paris, France.
The decodes of l950, l960 and part ofthe ,70s sc]w an clrf world with drcIStiCChanges. Public and government tastes werein an era during which extremes, fads, shocks
and abstractions were getting the lion's shareof government sponsorship/ grants of publicmoney and media promotion. AAPL raisedobjections to these prcICtiCeS tO the highestlevels of government at the White House, before Senate Committees, through lectures, radio broadcasts, rv appearances and in
publicc]tions.Eminent Artists who hove served the AAPL
in the past as Officers cmd Board Membersinclude Dean Cornwell, LioneI Barrymore,
Roger Deering' Horvey Dunn and Frederic\^thitaker. To these and the mclny unnamed,we the present AAPL members give ourscllutatiOnS and Our thanks.
The AAPL Grc]nd National Exhibitions have
always been for members only' and we werealwclyS fOrfunCIte tO acquire exhibition Space
gratis. Things began to change in l980 to apoint where we spent most of our timescouring New York City for exhibition space. In l98l, after severc]l yec]rs of negotiations,we had a beautiful Grand National ExhibitionCIt the exhibition gCIIlery of the Equitable Life
Assurance Society. The following year theywere unc]ble to include the AAPL into their
exhibit schedule, and nothing else wasavailclble. After a review of the very few
galleries large enough for our Grand NationalExhibitions, all of which had high rental fees,We Selected the Salmagundi Club, a beautifulLandmark Building on lower Fifth Avenue in
