What to expect biking in the E.U.P. T he topography of the ea stern U .P. ca n be genera lly describ ed a s level with a rea s of rolling hills and som e a rea s of sha rp relief. Much of the region is forested or wetla nds. Typical sta te highwa ys will ha ve a 6-8 foot shoulder, with 4-6 feet of tha t shoulder pa ved. Ma jor county roa ds typica lly ha ve a 4 foot gra vel shoulder. Minor county roa ds m a y ha ve a sm a ll gra ss shoulder. Bicycle Safety Rights and Responsibilities In genera l, bicyclists on public roa dwa ys ha ve the sa m e rights and responsibilities as a utom obile drivers, and are subject to the sa m e sta te la ws and ordinances. For everyone’s sa fety observe bicycling rules and sa fety tips. Be predictable Opera ting a bicycle a s a vehicle m a kes your m ovem ents m ore predicta ble to others and im proves sa fety for everyone. Always wear an approved helmet Alwa ys ha ve your helm et fitted a nd a djusted properly. Helm ets should fit snugly so tha t they do not m ove around while riding. Ride with traffic Motorists are not looking for bicyclists riding on the wrong side of the roa d. S ta te la w requires tha t cyclists ride with the flow of tra ffic. Use hand signals Hand signa ls tell pedestria ns and m otorists wha t you intend to do. It is sta te la w tha t you use signa ls. Watch for cars pulling out Alwa ys assum e tha t m otorists do not see you. Ma ke eye conta ct to assess your sa fety before proceeding in front of a vehicle. Wear appropriate clothing Wea r light, bright a nd/or reflective clothing a t a ll tim es to im prove your visibility. Dress in la yers and bring gea r for unforeseen cha nges in wea ther. Use lights at night S ta te la w requires a front white light visible for 500 ft and a red reflector visible for 600 ft a t night. More reflectors and stronger lights m a ke you m ore visible. Be courteous and respectful on trails S how courtesy to a ll tra il users. Adhere to tra il hours and restrictions. Respect the rights of property owners. Always yield to other, slower trail users S low down and use ca ution when approa ching other tra il users. When overta king, announce your intentions by sa ying “passing on your left” or ringing your bell. Ride as far to the right as practical Form a single file line when other users are present. S lower tra il users should sta y to the right. Keep to the Right and Ride Only Two Abreast Bicyclists should keep as fa r to the right a s pra ctica ble, m oving left to a void ha za rds and to position them selves in the appropria te designa ted through or turn la nes. No m ore tha n two bicyclists should ride side by side in a public roa dwa y.
