Many sports are played in teams. Working in groups helps to improve teamwork and co-operation but what sports can this include? Where else in sport does co-operation occur?

Co-operation

Page 3: 5 Benefits…

This can be thought of as psychological (mental) both in terms of the preparation needed to compete (geeing yourself up!) and in terms of getting away from the stresses of life.

Competition

Page 4: 5 Benefits…

Coming back to sport after a period of inactivity or completing an almost impossible task, both these allow the element of physical challenge. The London Marathon is one of the biggest physical challenges that casual runners will ever face.

Physical Challenge

Beautiful movements occur in all sports. It is the observer who is often able to appreciate the performer and make a judgement but the performer can also ‘feel’ when the movement is technically correct.

Taking part in sport means involvement with other people, either as a team-mate, an opponent or under the control of officials. It is through sport we can make long-lasting friendships and even meet our future wife or husband!

MICHAEL OWEN, FOOTBALLER

Owen is a good role model. He does not attract any negative media attention, and does not take drugs or get into fights.

He has played for numerous football teams, and has represented England on many occasions.

Despite injury Owen has returned to play for MUFC and is still a top class player

Michael Owen is now considered to be amongst an ‘older’ generation of footballers. This may affect his performance as he is not as ‘fit’ as many other players. His age may also increase the risk of injury

Owen trains with his team mates at Carrington. He does not have to pay to use the facility as he is a professional footballer
