3.7 – JESUS REVIEW: LESSON OPENER (5 MINUTES)

OPTION 1: A GOOD FOUNDATION

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Several sets of building toys, tables

LEADER PREP: Before Large Group Time, gather several sets of building toys (e.g., Legos, building blocks, Lincoln Logs®). Place sets on tables in the front of the room, making several building sites.

ACTIVITY:

STEP 1: As the kids enter, assign them to a building site. Give those who are stationed together at building sites three minutes to work together to construct a structure that is able to withstand a small amount of shaking.

STEP 2: After three minutes, have all the kids stand around the first building site. Briefly discuss the structure and shake the table gently to see if the structure withstands a small amount of movement. (Be sure to remind all the kids standing by not to touch the tables displaying the structures!) After you have examined all the structures, point to the bottom or corner pieces of each structure and ask: What would happen if I were to knock out these pieces to the structure? (The structure would be damaged and most likely crumble.) Ask if a group would be willing to let you knock out the bottom or corner pieces of their structure as a demonstration of this. They should be aware that their structure will likely be destroyed. If the structure does not fall right away, try shaking it gently again.

STEP 3: Explain to the kids that just as those pieces were the most important parts of their structures, there is one person that is most important to our faith: Jesus Christ. Remind the group that because Jesus Christ is the ONLY way that we can have a relationship with God, He is the most important part of what we believe. Encourage them to remember how important Jesus is to their faith as they review who He is and what He has done for us.

STEP 4: Open in prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to guide you and your T&T kids as you review the truths about Jesus in this lesson. Transition to main lesson.

3.7 – JESUS REVIEW: MAIN LESSON (10 MINUTES)

D. Jesus did not stay dead. After three days, He came alive again. He now lives in heaven with His Father God. Because Jesus rose again, we have a sure hope that He will also raise us up after we die and give us new bodies so we can live forever in heaven with Him.

E. Jesus showed us love, forgiveness, and grace when we didn’t deserve it. He continues to treat us with grace. We should follow His example by showing love, forgiveness and grace to others.

F. Jesus showed grace to many people while He lived on earth. Grace means giving somebody something good that he or she doesn’t deserve. Jesus offered people forgiveness and He healed many people, even though they did not deserve it. Jesus showed us grace by taking our punishment for sin when He died on the cross. Instead of giving us the payment of death for sin that we deserve, He offers us forgiveness and a way to have eternal life with God.

STEP 3: Open your Bible and read Ephesians 5:1-2 aloud. Direct the kids’ attentions to the last box on their worksheet: My Conclusion. Remind the kids that when we study who Jesus is and understand all He has done for us, we can determine to trust in Him as Savior and follow His example of forgiveness, grace and love. Give the group one minute to finish the sentence in their box.

OPTION 1: WHO IS JESUS?

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Bible bookmarked to Ephesians 5:1-2, Key Statements handout (Resource Bundle), Keys to Understanding Jesus handout (Resource Bundle), scissors, pens or pencils, a chalkboard and chalk or a whiteboard and dry erase markers

LEADER PREP: Print out and cut apart the Key Statements handout. Print copies of the Keys to Understanding Jesus handout, one copy per child.

ACTIVITY:

STEP 1: Tell the kids that they are going to follow steps to help them explore who Jesus is. Divide the kids into groups of two or three and assign a leader to each group, or assign a leader to move among a few groups. Depending on the size of your T&T club, give each group one or two sections from the Key Statements handout. Distribute a copy of the Keys to Understanding Jesus handout to each child. Encourage leaders to guide the kids as they work through the first box on their worksheets.

STEP 2: After two minutes, let each group share their findings with the larger group. This is a great time to let parents sit in so they can hear what their child has been learning during the unit. Discuss their thoughts and share the following key concepts:

A. Jesus Christ is fully God. While Jesus was on earth, He showed people what His Father, God, is like and did things that only God could do. Jesus had to be fully God to save us from our sins because only God is without sin.

B. Christ loved us so much that He limited His knowledge and power as God to become human. He did this to live with us and know what our struggles are like. Most importantly, He did this so that He could die and take the punishment for sin. Jesus is fully God and fully human.

C. Every person is a sinner. The punishment for sin is death and separation from a relationship with God because God must punish sin. He sent His Son, Jesus, to earth to die for our sins. When you trust that His death took the punishment for your sin, you are forgiven. You are saved from punishment and have a relationship with God forever. That’s why Jesus Christ is called the Savior.

3.7 – JESUS REVIEW: LESSON OPENER (5 MINUTES)

OPTION 2: FOCAL POINT

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Camera, computer and printer (optional), video projector and computer (optional)

LEADER PREP: Choose three or four items to photograph. (These do not need to be fancy pictures; pictures from a smartphone will work!) Take a picture of the item, and then take a close up of a very small section of that item (e.g., take a picture of a table and then take a picture of just the wood grain of the table). It is OK if the second image is blurry. (Optional: compete the activity using images of animals or people!) Print out these images or project them on a wall during the opening activity.

STEP 1: During Large Group Time, display the close-up image of the first item you photographed and have the kids try to guess what the item is. After several guesses, display the big picture of the item. Continue the activity in this pattern by showing the images of two or three more items.

STEP 2: Explain to them that while the first image in each pair is a true picture of something, we miss out on what that item really is when we don’t see the whole picture.

Point out to the kids that the same thing often happens when people hear about Jesus or study only one small topic about Jesus in the Bible. They learn one or two small things, like He healed people or He was a good teacher or He loved people. However, those people do not study the big picture that Scripture teaches us about Jesus. There is so much more to learn about Jesus!

Tell the kids that during the lesson time they will study the big picture of Jesus and learn many true things about who He is and what He has done for us.

STEP 3: Open in prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to guide you and the kids into God’s truth through the lesson. Transition to main lesson.

3.7 – JESUS REVIEW: MAIN LESSON (10 MINUTES)

OPTION 2: EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Notebooks (one per child), paper, pens or pencils, tables and chairs, Bibles each bookmarked to one of the five Scripture reference sets.

LEADER PREP: Purchase inexpensive notebooks, one for each child. Write the following station numbers and Bible references on paper, one reference set per paper: 1. Luke 19:1-10; 2. Mark 2:1-12; 3. John 11:1-3, 17, 43-44; 4. Luke 23:32-33, 39-43; 5. Mark 16:1-7.

Before Large Group Time, arrange five different stations around the room and number them. (These stations can be either a table and two or three or chairs or three chairs placed in a small circle.) Place the reference set of the corresponding number at each station along with a Bible bookmarked to the appropriate passage so it is easy for the kids to find and read.

STEP 1: Give each child a notebook and a pen or pencil. Have them write the numbers 1 through 5 on the first page of their notebooks.

STEP 2: Encourage the kids to travel in groups of two or three to each station in the room and to read the verses at each station. Ask the kids to pretend that they are eyewitnesses to those events in Jesus’ life and to imagine what it would be like if they were there. After they have studied each event, have them record in their journals one or two sentences about what they imagined about being there or one or two things they learned about Jesus. Explain to them that they can visit the stations in any order; they just need to record their ideas in their notebooks by the corresponding number of the station that they are visiting.

After all the kids have visited all stations, share the following key concepts:

A. Jesus is fully God. No one created Him; He has always been alive. Because He is God, Jesus was able to perform all the miracles and forgive sin and come alive again after death.

B. Jesus is fully human. Even though Jesus has always been God, He chose to give up some of His godly powers and knowledge to come to earth and become human. He was born as a baby and grew

up. He felt pain and sadness and experienced all the same emotions that we feel. He had hard times like we have on earth. But the whole time that Jesus was alive on earth, He never sinned.

C. Jesus had to be both fully God and fully human in order to pay the punishment for sin. Because Jesus loved us and died for sin, He offers grace to us, even though we were enemies of God because of our sin and didn’t deserve His love at all.

D. If we choose to trust in Jesus as Savior, God forgives all of our sins and sees us as righteous, or holy, without sin. He sees us like He sees His Son, Jesus, even though we will still sin sometimes. God is patient with us since He has already forgiven all sins we have done and will ever do, and He helps us to obey Him more and more.

STEP 3: Have the kids look over all the things they wrote about Jesus. Remind the kids that the more they study God’s Word, the more they will learn about Jesus. Encourage them to determine to follow Jesus’ examples of love and forgiveness as they seek to live their lives for Him.
