Essential Oils are

50 to 70 times more

powerful than herbs

What Are EssentialOils?

What Are Essential Oils?Essential oils are microscopic molecules of oil extracted from flowers, leaves, stems, peel and/or roots of trees, shrubs, grasses, flowers, herbs and fruit. Simply speaking, essential oils contain the distilled essence of the plant – the lifeblood of the plant.

WHAT MAKES THEM SO POWERFUL?There are approximately 40 million trillion molecules in one drop of essential oil. You have 100 trillion cells in your body, so each cell is serviced by 40,000 molecules when you use just 1drop. That’s why you need very few drops in a recipe – they’re so powerful that just a little goes a very long way!

This is not to say that essential oils can cure every disease or heal every health issue. What essential oils do, in a nutshell, is position your body to heal itself. If you take prescription medications for health issues, then you need to decide with your health care professional how they

are helping you and how essential oils cancomplement your existing health routine.

If you have a broken bone, there isn’t an essential oil in the world that will reset it! Use your natural wisdom and common sense to decide when and how essential oils can serve your health needs.

Essential oils contain hundreds of natural chemicals. Although each oil has its own unique chemical components, what makes all essential oils special is something called "terpenes". Terpenes do a lot of work in ourbodies.

This really illustrates how using essential oils every day can powerfully support your health!

4. Essential oils reprogram our cells so they function and replicate properly. For example, essential oils such as Basil, Pine and Rosemary restore function to the adrenal glands.

5. They're sedative. They relax our nervous system and our muscles, which helps ease pain, tension, cramps and muscle spasms. Lavender is famous for its relaxing, sedative qualities.

7What Do Essential Oils Do?

What Do Essential Oils Do?5 WAYS ESSENTIAL OILS SUPPORT OUR HEALTH

While each essential oil has a unique set of natural chemicals, essential oils in general do five main things to support ourhealth:

1. They create an environment unfriendly to viruses, bacteria and fungi. This is why they're called "antiseptic" (which basically means germ killing.) Every oil in our 5 Oils Toolkit isantiseptic.

2. Essential oils reduce inflammation, which is what causes pain, redness and swelling. Lavender and Peppermint are particularly good anti-inflammatory oils.

3. They clean up free radicals. Free radicals occur when a blood cell steals an electron fromanother blood cell. Free radicals make us sick. Take a look at these slides of someone’s blood. Notice how the blood cells on the left slide are connected by free radicals.

The second slide shows blood taken 30 seconds after 1 drop of essential oil was applied to the bottomof his feet.

5 OilsToolkit 8How Do Essential Oils Work?

How Do Essential OilsWork?WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU USE ESSENTIAL OILS?Inhaling essential oils stimulates the olfactory nerves (sense of smell), which send signals to thebrain's limbic system (sometimes called the "emotional brain“). The limbic system controls heartrate, blood pressure, breathing, memory and hormone production.

When the limbic system receives signals from the olfactory nerves, it triggers an emotional, physiological and endocrine (hormone) response.

For example, when you smell Lavender essential oil, its microscopic chemicals immediately trigger your emotional brain to calm your nervous system and relax your muscles. These combined effects of aromatherapy reduce your stress and help you sleep.

When you inhale an essential oil, such as with a diffuser, the oil is absorbed through the mucus membranes of your respiratory tract and lungs. From there, it's transferred into the bloodstream.

When essential oils are absorbed through the skin, such as with massage, they travel into the lymphatic system, which then circulates them into the bloodstream.

Once the oils are circulating in the blood, they get to work wherever they’re needed – reducing inflammation, fixing imbalances, fighting infection and soon.

Essential Oils and Your Brain

Some essential oils (such as Sandalwood and Patchouli) can cross the blood brain barrier, which makes them especially good for helping with health issues such as ADHD, Alzheimer’s and stroke.

5 OilsToolkit 9What About Side Effects?

Generally speaking, you don’t have to worry about side effects from essential oils. Here’s the story on that:

Pharmaceutical companies look at substances that already occur in nature and mimic them synthetically. So let’s say they look at Lavender and notice that it’s an analgesic (which means it killspain) so they take that ONE compound and they reproduce it synthetically.

Whydo they do that? Because it's cheaper and it can be patented. You can’t patent something that occurs in nature like Lavender.

When you extract one compound from anatural substance, you're taking it away from all the

What About Side Effects?

DO THEY HAVE SIDE EFFECTS?

Generally speaking, No.

Essential oils are gentle yet effective – without side effects or addiction.

(Unless you consider more energy, weight loss and better mood to be side effects!)

compounds that fight the potential side effects of the compound you removed.

That’s why a doctor prescribes medication for someone’s health problem, they sometimes also have to prescribe other medications to fight the side effects from the prescription drug.

But by using the full, unaltered compounds in Lavender oil, you don’t have to worry about side effects. It contains all the compounds it needs to keep you safe.

That said, sometimes when people start using essential oils they begin experiencing symptoms resulting from their body’s detoxification process. Essential oils clean out your body, and when it detoxifies too quickly it can cause symptoms like acne, headache, frequent urination, etc. Reduce the amount of essential oils you’re using and the symptoms should ease off.

5 OilsToolkit 10Does Quality Matter?

It takes 1 ton of plant

material to make 1 to

2 liters of Peppermint

essential oil

HOW DOES QUALITY AFFECT YOU?Let’s say 1000 pounds of Peppermint plants are distilled down to about a liter of essential oil. That oil contains not only super-concentrated Peppermint, but – if it’s been sprayed with pesticides or grown in chemically treated soil– also super-concentrated toxins. BAD for you!

Now let’s say a supplier wants to sell essential oils at a low price. Since there are no labeling laws governing disclosure of exactly what’s in them, he can add synthetic fragrance to make them smell stronger. He can also add lower grade oil to “stretch” them to make a higher profit. And he doesn’t have to tell you any of that!

Does Quality Matter?WHAT DO YOU NEED IN AN ESSENTIAL OIL?You really want two main things in an essential oil. POTENCY and PURITY.Why? Because otherwise you’re just rubbing on a nice smelling liquid that doesn’t really do anything for you –and in fact can be harming your health.

To get a potent (strong) essential oil, the plants need to be grown in their native habitat. Whenthey’re transplanted to a new environment (different soil, air temperatures, altitude, etc) they don’t have the same number and potency of molecular compounds or healing properties.

When you’re looking at oil PURITY, you want to be sure there’s no chemical enhancement of compounds, that suppliers don’t chemically remove any undesirable compounds and that they don’t artificially add in anything missing. Even worse, you definitely don’t want them adding synthetic variants or failing to remove any impurities.

5 OilsToolkit 11How to Choose Essential Oils

Choosing Essential OilsHOW TO CHOOSE ESSENTIAL OILS

So if an oil can contain super-concentrated pesticides or harmful synthetic chemicals without telling you on the label, how do you choose safe essential oils?

It really comes down to trusting your source.

Does “Organic”

Mean It’s Organic?

Not necessarily.

It’s kind of like when

fast-food restaurants

advertise theirburgers

as “pure beef patties”.

Sure, the beef that’s in

them is pure beef, but

there’s also other stuff

in there that you

probably don’t want to

look at tooclosely.

Hmmm...

1. Do some research. Check into a supplier’s reputation online and in the aromatherapycommunity.

Ask the supplier how they source their oils.Ask to see the gas chromatography reports. Ask if they do mass spectrometry testing. You don’t need to see the reports, you just want to know if the supplier is willing to stand behind their product by sharing details.

2. Read labels. An essential oil such as Peppermintshould be pure enough to take internally – after all,Peppermint is afood!

3. Do a “smell test”. If an oil’s scent is overbearing in any one note it may contain synthetic chemical substitutes. A 100% pure therapeutic-grade essential oil should have a balanced, broad fragrance profile and should smell crystal clean.

Also test the feel of your essential oil. A pure essentialoil should not feel slick or oily but rather should absorbcleanly and completely into yourskin.

Page 13: 5 OilsToolkit · essential oils do, in a nutshell, is position your body to heal itself. If you take prescription medicationsfor health issues, then you needto decide with your health

5 OilsToolkit 12Essential Oil Safety

Essential Oil SafetyBecause essential oils are biochemically pure, they’re generally very safe and gentle with few or no side effects.

You can use essential oils as often as every 20minutes to relieve pain and other types of discomfort such as nausea, gas or breathingproblems.

The main concern is how a person’s skin might react tothe oils. If skin irritation does occur, rub vegetable oil onthe area. Always dilute essential oils with OIL, not water.

Some essential oils such as Oregano, Thyme, Cinnamon and Clove are “hot” oils, so you always dilute them. Milder oils such and Lavender and Tea Tree are usually safe to use undiluted. Read bottle labels for dilution requirements.

Keep essential oils out of your eyes, ears and nose, open sores andwounds.

HOW TO DO A SPOT TEST

If you're highly allergic or have extremely sensitiveskin, do a spot test before using essentialoils.

Put 1 drop of the essential oil into 15 drops of carrier oil such as jojoba and rub it into your upper chest. If you show no reaction after 12 hours, it's likely safe to use it.

Babies, Children &

Pregnant Women

Generally speaking,

reduce drops by 75%

for babies and by 50%

for children.

Only some essential

oils are considered to

be safe on skin during

pregnancy:

Cardamom, Coriander,

Geranium, Ginger,

Grapefruit, Lavender,

Lemon, Melissa, Lime,

Neroli, Palmarosa,

Petitgrain, Spearmint

and Ylang Ylang.

Page 14: 5 OilsToolkit · essential oils do, in a nutshell, is position your body to heal itself. If you take prescription medicationsfor health issues, then you needto decide with your health

5 OilsToolkit 13How to Use Essential Oils

Using Essential OilsThere are three main ways to use essential oils in your everyday life: aromatically, topicallyand internally. Generally, you’ll use 2 to 5 drops of an oil per application no matter which method of application.

USING A DIFFUSER

Diffusion is a very powerful way of getting the therapeutic effects of an oil. Here’s why:

Mood. When you inhale an essential oil, your body takes the scent in through your olfactory system. This creates change in the limbic system, which is where emotion is generated. So we diffuse oils to affect mood or emotion. Diffusing is the most effective way of treating any kind of depression, anxiety, or other moodissue.

Aromatherapy Oil Burners Also called candle diffusers, these are one of the prettiest ways to scent your home.

Aromatherapy Nebulizers Best for getting the full therapeutic benefits of essential oils.

Aromatherapy VaporizersSafe, economical and practical, there are two basic types.

Breathing. Taking oils in through our lungsaffects our respiratory system: good for colds & flu, bronchitis, asthma – anything breathingrelated.

Germs. When oils are diffused into the atmosphere, their antibacterial properties clean and detoxify the air. Great forsickrooms.

Pregnancy. Diffusing is a great way to get the benefits of essential oils during pregnancy. Especially during the first trimester, many women choose not to use oils on their skin, since some oils can cause uterine contractions or hormonechanges.

Savings. When you diffuse essential oils, the entire family gets the benefits, so it’s very cost effective.

Page 15: 5 OilsToolkit · essential oils do, in a nutshell, is position your body to heal itself. If you take prescription medicationsfor health issues, then you needto decide with your health

5 OilsToolkit 14How to Use Essential Oils

Using Essential OilsAPPLYING TO SKIN

This means rubbing an essential oil into the skin, such as with massage or in a lotion. Essential oilsare fat soluble, so they enter our tissues veryeasily.

Many of the hints and tips in this book recommend applying the oils undiluted to skin. It’s only safeto do this if you’re using a good quality brand. Read your bottle labels!

Massage is particularly good for pain relief. You can actually override your body’s pain response bystimulating the nerves with rubbing. The sensations you experience when you rub an area travel toyour brain faster than pain sensations, so the rubbing sensation replaces the pain sensation in yourbrain. (That’s why you instinctively rub your elbow when you hit your funnybone.)

Why put essential oils

on your feet?

Very porous

Less sensitive

Reflexology

Oils are usually applied topically for local effect, but your body quickly starts to move the therapeutic effect throughout your system, so in fact it affects the whole body. For a systemic effect, essential oils are generally applied to the bottoms of thefeet.

MAKE THEM MORE EFFECTIVE

When you apply a warm, damp cloth to an area after applying an oil, the warmth and water “drive” the oil into your body while also preventing the oil molecules from being lost to the air. Otherwise, up to 80% of an oil’s molecules dissipate into the air around you. (This works especially well for pain relief.)

Page 16: 5 OilsToolkit · essential oils do, in a nutshell, is position your body to heal itself. If you take prescription medicationsfor health issues, then you needto decide with your health

5 OilsToolkit 15How to Use Essential Oils

Using Essential OilsINTERNAL USEYou should only use top quality essential oils with this method because of the possible effects of highly concentrated contaminants or pesticides. Read the bottle label to see if an oil is safefor internaluse.

The reason we take oils internally is to target the internal organs such as our digestive system, mouth and throat, liver and urogenitaltract.

Also, oils taken internally have a very rapid effect as they hit our blood stream quickly.

Here’s how to take essential oils internally.

Put a drop under your tongue (Peppermint for freshbreath).

Add a drop to your water or any other drink (Lemon in your canteen).

Add a drop to a teaspoon of honey and let it melt in your mouth. (Lemon is good forsore throats and coughs.)

Put a few drops in a vegetable capsule (you can get them at a health food store or online). This is a great way to make your own natural allergy pill or “flu shot”.

Make them into a “tea”. Heat some water and when it’s cool enough to drink, add some honeyand a drop of Lemon or Peppermint to the water. You can also add them to herbal teas in the same way.

Cook with them. Add 1 drop of Oregano to soups and stews during the cool-down period.Add Peppermint to brownies, and a drop of Lemon to cranberrysauce.

An evergreen woody shrub, growing up to 3 feet (1 meter) tall, with narrow, green leaves and violet blue flowers. It has a clean, fresh, floral, herbaceous scent. Non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitizing.

LAVENDER IN HISTORY

Lavender has been used for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians used it for mummification and perfume. The Romans used it for bathing and cooking, It's even mentioned in the Bible (it was called Spikenard at the time) when Mary anointed Jesus' feet with Lavenderoil.

In Medieval and Renaissance Europe, washing women were known as "Lavenders", and it was used in the 17th century to ward off plague. Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, known as "the Father of Aromatherapy", began his lifelong study of essential oils as a result of Lavender's healing effects on his seriously burnedhand.

During World Wars I and II, the Korean War and in Viet Nam soldiers and medics carried Lavender oil with them onto the battlefields to disinfect wounds, soothe fears and ease pain.

Lavender RecipesSOOTHING LAVENDER BATH SALTS

Use this relaxing bath salt recipe for anxiety, stress, insomnia, aches & pains and general misery. It’s also great for tired, cranky kids. Mood lifting, pain relieving, comforting and sedative.

Bath salts are one of the simplest aromatherapy recipes you can make. If you’re looking for a fun way to spend time with your kids or grandkids, making bath salts is a greatchoice.

INGREDIENTS

3 cups Dead Sea Salt

10 drops Lavender essentialoil

5 drops Lemon essentialoil

2 drops Peppermint essentialoil

DIRECTIONS

Put the salt into a glass, ceramic or metal bowl (plastic and wood will absorb the essential oils and be ruined.) Drop in the essential oils, placing each drop in its own little spot on top of the salt. Using a metal spoon, stir until wellmixed.

Store in a dark glass or PET plastic jar. If you want to use clear glass, like a Mason jar, go ahead, but make sure you use the bath salts within one or two months and keep the jar in a dark cupboard. Use about one cup of salt per bath.

There’s no real expiry date on bath salts – if you open the jar and feel like the scent has faded, just stir in another drop or two of Lavender and you’re ready to go.

This simple blend of carrier and essential oils is also more powerful than it looks. Massage it deeply into your skin using firm but gentle strokes moving upwards and outwards from your chin to your forehead. Use it after your facial mask and every night before bed.

2fl oz (60ml) Jojoba oil (use Grapeseed oil if your skin tends to beoily)

5 drops Lavender essentialoil

1 drop Lemon essential oil*

Combine all the ingredients in a dark glass or PET plastic bottle.Use within 3 to 6 months.

LUSCIOUS LIP BALM

Body heat softens this lip balm slightly, which is nice, but it’s also good at room temperature. Adding more beeswax makes a firmer balm, less makes it softer. Experiment to see what you like best. Best for lip balm pots, not tubes.

1 teaspoon grated Beeswax

1 teaspoon Cocoa Butter (grind in your food processor for easiermeasuring)

1 teaspoon Coconut or Jojoba oil

3 to 5 drops Lavender essential oil, depending on how strong you want it

Melt everything except the Lavender oil in a double boiler over a VERY LOW heat. Remove fromheat. Let cool slightly, then stir in the Lavender. Pour into a lip balm tin, cap tightly and let cool.

Lavender RecipesLAVENDER GOATS MILK SOAP BARS

This is the second most popular soap bar I sell during tourist season in our county. I love thisrecipe because it’s quick and easy to make, and people are always so impressed!

It makes enough soap to fill a 9x9 inch cake pan, but you can reduce it by half and use soap molds if you prefer. Sometimes I sprinkle a layer of oatmeal over the top for a pretty (and exfoliating)effect.

INGREDIENTS

53 oz (1,500g) goats milk melt & pour Soap Base

Optional: 3 oz (85g) Shea butter

5 teaspoons Lavender essential oil

5 drops blue Food Coloring

1 drop red Food Coloring

DIRECTIONS

Melt the soap base (and shea butter if using) in thetoppart of a double boiler or an 8 cup heavy duty glass measuring cup placed in a pot of water. Onceit’s completely melted, remove it from the heat and stir in the essential oils and the food coloring.

Pour the soap into a silicone cake pan (silicone is WAY easier to use than other types of container – after much experimentation it’s all I use) and let coolovernight.

Remove the soap block from the cake pan and cut it into bars. Wrap them in cling wrap to keep the scent in and prevent the soap from sweating. Then attach a label and decorate.

5 OilsToolkit 25Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon Essential OilLemon is a powerful cleanser and detoxifier. It’s also a natural antidepressant and nerve tonic. It balances your nervous system; calming racing, jittery nerves while boosting healthy energy and clearing your mind.

WHAT IS LEMON?

Citrus limon

Lemon is a small evergreen tree (grows 9 to 19 feet tall) with oval leaves, fragrant flowers and green fruits turning to yellow. It fruits all year round, and each tree can yield as many as 1500 Lemons per year.

The essential oil is cold pressed from the rind. It has a light, sharp, clear citrusy fragrance which is reviving, mood lifting and detoxifying. Smells like Lemons only much more so!

May irritate dry or sensitive skin and can increase risk of sunburn. Don’t use before sun exposure.

LEMON’S EFFECTS ON THE BODYAnticancer, antidepressant, antiseptic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, astringent, mild diuretic, immune tonic, lymphatic decongestant, pancreatic stimulant.

STORING LEMON OILAll citrus essential oils, including Lemon, are slightly more vulnerable to heat and light than other oils. Be sure to store your Lemon oil in a cool, dark place, and make sure the bottle cap is always tightly closed.

If your Lemon oil looks cloudy, it’s time to replace it.

Pour a generous splash (about 1/4 cup) white vinegar into a bucket of hot water. Add 10 drops Lemon and 5 drops Lavender, Tea Tree or Peppermint depending on what scent you feel likethat day. No need to rinse – there’s noresidue.

For really dirty floors, add a squirt (1 to 2 tablespoons) liquid dish soap. You’ll have to rinse your floor with this recipe because it leaves a soap residue.

Add 10 drops Lemon and 10 drops Lavender,Tea Tree or Peppermint to 2 cups of baking soda. Stir until completely mixed. Sprinkle a fine layer onto your carpets and leave on for at least two hours. For stains, gently scrub the baking soda into the carpet. Vacuum.

Like Lemon, Tea Tree is especially good for eliminating bacteria-causing odors. You could alsoblend 10 drops Lemon and 5 drops each Lavender and Tea Tree for a nice clean scent. I use abig Parmesan cheese shaker I got from a kitchen supplystore.

Oregano Essential Oil“MEDICINE CABINET IN A BOTTLE”

Origanum vulgare

Jean Valnet noted that Oregano oil outperformed anti-inflammatory drugs in easing pain and inflammation, stating that it’s nearly as powerful as morphine for pain relief.

Because of its strong antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties, Oregano is often used for candida and fungal infections. It’s also known for dealing with respiratory problems such as colds, flu, sore throat, asthma and bronchitis – relieving congestion, loosening phlegm and quieting coughs.

Oregano is a member of the mint family. The essential oil is steam distilled from leaves, andhas a spicy, salty, sharp, penetrating herbal scent.

Because Oregano has such a strong medicinal scent, it’s used mostly in recipes for fighting infection and health concerns – but not often for appealing skin applications.

OREGANO’S EFFECTS

WHAT CAN OREGANO BE

USED FOR?One of the most unpleasant things about viruses is that they use your cells as a host, even to the point of manipulating DNA and RNA, which provide instructions for cell operations. This makes viruses especially difficult to eradicate without harming your own cells.

Viruses’ adaptogenic and opportunistic nature is amazing, and their ability to hide in the spine or fatty tissues and warm places in the body surprises us when we get a little overtired and then feel sick in the throat or stomach.

Medical science can’t touch most viral infections – when a doctor prescribes an antibiotic for a viral infection it’s only to try to help with the bacterial infection that might follow in the weakened immune system. Excerpted from a presentation by

Oregano RecipesNAIL FUNGUS REMEDIES

Fungal infections happen more often with toenails but can also occur on fingernails. A typical infection will start at the tip of the nail as a yellowish-white spot and if not treated will spread to the rest of the nail. The result is usually a thick, yellow-toned nail with split, crumbly edges.

Fungus infections are contagious, so you can get them from walking barefoot, from someone inyour close circle of family and friends or even from yourself if you have athlete’s foot, ring wormor other fungal infections.

Fungi love warm, moist places, so boots or enclosed shoes and warm climates are the ideal place for them to thrive. Fungal infections are also more likely to grow in people whose immune system is weakened.

ANTI-FUNGAL TOENAIL REMEDY

Mix 1 drop Oregano, 4 drops Tea Tree, 2 drops Lavender (optional: add 2 drops Myrrh). Apply to the top of the nail and the nail bed around the nail faithfully every morning and night until the infection goes away.

ANTI-FUNGAL FINGERNAIL

REMEDY

Mix 4 drops each Tea Tree and Lemon (optional: add 2 drops Myrrh). Massage into the cuticle and around the nail bed 4 to 5 times a day until the fungusdisappears.

You can use this recipe both as a hand soap and ashower gel. In a pinch I also use it for hand washing laundry and dishes. It’s versatile!

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup finely grated Glycerin or Olive Oil Soap bar

5 cupsWater

1 tablespoon vegetable Glycerin

20 drops Peppermint essential oil

5 drops each Lavender and Tea Tree essential oil

DIRECTIONS

Grate the soap bar using the fine side of your cheese grater - the finer the flakes, the smoother the liquid soap will be (also they’ll melt faster).

Place the soap flakes, water and glycerin in a large pot and warm gentlyover a low heat, stirring occasionally, until the soap flakes have completely dissolved.

Let the soap cool overnight. In the morning it will look milky and lumpy and kind of like jelly.Using an electric hand mixer or egg beater, whip the homemade liquid soap mixture until itbecomes smooth. If you have kids, let them squish out the lumps with their hands.

Stir in the essential oils. Pour the soap into dark glass, ceramic or PET plastic soap bottles and use as normal. Keep any extra in a large glass bottle in a cool dark place.

Peppermint RecipesLEMON-MINT SOAP BARS

I sell A LOT of these soap bars in our county during the tourist season. I call them “Happy GreenSoap”. They’re wonderful, and very easy tomake.

This recipe makes enough soap to fill a 9x9 inch cake pan because I found that people like a square (well, rectangular) soap bar rather than a cute mold. Go figure!

INGREDIENTS

53 oz (1,500g) glycerin melt & pour Soap Base

2 1/2 teaspoons Peppermint essential oil

2 teaspoons Lemon oil (I actually prefer Lemongrass for this soap)

Optional: 25 drops (1/4 teaspoon) Eucalyptus essential oil (really peps it up)

3 drops green Food Coloring

DIRECTIONS

Melt your soap in the top part of a double boiler or an 8 cup heavy duty glass measuring cup placedin a pot of water. Once the soap base is completely melted, remove it from the heat and stir in the essential oils and the foodcoloring.

Pour the soap into a silicone cake pan (silicone is SO much easier to use than other types of container) and let coolovernight.

Remove the soap block from the cake pan and cut it into bars. Wrap them in cling wrap to keepthe scent in and prevent the soap from sweating. Then attach a label and some ribbon or prettypaper.

Tea Tree RecipesTEA TREE DEODORANTSTICK

This recipe is much healthier than traditional antiperspirant, which has been linked to breast cancer and other health problems. It’s also inexpensive but effective. You can make it without the probiotics, but they help both with odor reduction and balancing the bacteria on your skin. (Yes, good bacteria are critical for yourhealth.)

I actually make this recipe in a jar rather than a deodorant tube. Use an old, clean tube or look online for new ones from packaging suppliers.

INGREDIENTS

1 tablespoon each Cocoa butter, Shea butter, Coconut oil & Beeswax

2 1/2 tablespoons Arrowroot powder (or Cornstarch, but it may irritate sensitive skin)

1 tablespoon Baking Soda (omit or replace with Bentonite clay if your skin is sensitive)

10 drops Tea Tree essential oil

5 drops each Lavender and Lemon essential oil (or your choice of oils)

2 capsules shelf-stable powdered Probiotics

DIRECTIONS

Melt the beeswax and coconut oil over a VERY LOW heat in the top part of a double boiler until the wax is melted. Add the shea and cocoa butters and cook, stirring, until completelymelted.

Remove from heat and use a whisk to stir in the arrowroot powder, baking soda (orsubstitutes) and essential oils. When it has cooled to the consistency of pudding, stir in the probiotics.

Pour into a clean deodorant tubes (make sure it’s all the way open) or a dark glass or PET plastic jar. Use within 3 to 6 months.

Tea Tree RecipesTEA TREE ACNE FACE & BODY WASH

You can either use a good natural liquid soap or shower gel from your health food store or makesome of your own using the recipe on page 43.

If you’re going to use this recipe in the morning before spending time in the sun, switch the Lemon for Lemongrass so you don’t get burned. Or just leave it out.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup (250ml) Liquid Soap or Shower Gel

8 drops Tea Tree essential oil

4 drops each Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint essential oil

Optional: 1 drop Geranium or Ylang Ylang essential oil (to help normalize oil production)

DIRECTIONS

Stir the essential oils into the liquid soap. Pour the soapinto dark glass, ceramic or PET plastic soap bottles anduse as a facial soap or showergel.

A note on acne and moisturizing: although it may seem counter-productive to apply moisturizer when you have oily skin, it’s actually quite important. If you don't, your skin will produce even more oil to replace the oil removed during the cleansing process.

QUICK TRICK: TEA TREE FOR HAIR

Tea Tree RecipesDANDRUFF TREATMENT

This hot oil treatment uses coconut oil as the base oil because it’s antimicrobial (kills bacteria andfungi that may be causing the dandruff) and it’s also deeply nourishing to the scalp.

You can substitute a different carrier oil if you don’t have the patience to heat the oil every night. You might try Jojoba or Neem oil. Or fractionated coconut oil, which stays liquid at room temp.

INGREDIENTS

1 oz (30ml) virgin Coconut oil

8 drops each Lavender, Lemon and Tea Tree oil

1 to 2 drops Oregano oil (omit if it feels too hot)

Optional: 8 drops Rosemary oil (to help slow hair loss)

DIRECTIONS

Warm the coconut oil over a VERY LOW heat just until it melts. Remove from heat and stir in the essential oils.Pour into a small dark glass or PET plastic jar.

To use, melt the hair oil by placing the jar in a bowl ofwarm water. Massage about a teaspoon of the oil into yourscalp.

Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave in overnight. Wash out the next morning. Do this every night until the dandruff clears up.

WARNING!Dandruff shampoos create their own"job security".

They stop flaking bychemically scouringthe scalp.But...

That damages the next layer of developing skin cells...

Which creates more flakes...

And the cyclecontinues.

ResourcesMany of the items you’ll need for these recipes can be found at your local supermarket, such as baking soda, food coloring and vinegar. Other ingredients are best found online or at a health food store. Here are some links to the supplies you mightneed.

BUYING ESSENTIAL OILS & RECIPE INGREDIENTS

My number one recommendation for essential oils is dōTERRA. I personally buy all my oils from them because they’re the best on the market. And to my mind, quality is critically important –certainly worth one or two extra pennies per drop. Click to shop for doTERRA essential oils at retail prices or contact me to learn how to get wholesalepricing.

Here’s a secret about dōTERRA’s essential oils: in the long run, they end up costing about thesame as lower priced brands because you only need half the number of drops called for in anyrecipe. They’re that powerful. So in fact you get better quality at a comparable price.

If price is more important to you than quality right now, then I recommend Mountain Rose Herbs, who is my go-to supplier for other recipe ingredients. Their prices and quality are good, and theircustomer service and earth-friendly policies areadmirable.
