How cloth face coverings workCloth face coverings may prevent the person wearing the mask from spreading respiratory droplets when talking, sneezing, or coughing. If everyone wears a cloth face covering when out in public, such as going to the grocery store, the risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 can be reduced for the community. Since people may spread the virus before symptoms start, or even if people never have symptoms, wearing a cloth face covering may protect others around you. Face coverings worn by others may protect you from getting the virus from people carrying the virus.

New Laws Encourage Early Voting, Makes Election Day a State Holiday

To ensure safe and active participation in the 2020 general election during the ongoing COVID-19 pan-demic, Governor JB Pritzker signed SB 1863 and HB 2238 into law today to provide vote by mail (VBM) applications to all recent voters in Illinois. The legislation also expands early voting hours at permanent polling places, improves the signature verification process and makes election day a state holiday.   “In the face of a pandemic, massive economic upheaval, and renewed calls for racial justice, it’s more important than ever that Illinoisans can hold accountable a truly representative and transparent government – and that means ensuring all eligible residents can wield their right to vote in a way that doesn’t risk their personal health,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Sending vote by mail applications to residents who have par-ticipated in recent elections will allow more people to exercise that right from the safety of their own homes and help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our communities. I applaud Leader Kelly Burke, Senator Julie Morrison, the House Democratic Women’s Caucus and leaders in the General Assembly for working to ensure Illinoisans can continue to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming general election.”   In anticipation of the continued need for social distancing measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, vote by mail may be the safest method to cast a ballot in November.   Under the new law, local election offices must mail or email vote by mail ballot applications and the VBM timeline to voters who cast a ballot in the 2018 general election, the 2019 consolidated election or

the 2020 general primary election, including voters who registered or changed ad-dresses after the primary election. Voters who submit their application for a VBM ballot by October 1 will receive their VBM ballot by October 6.   The legislation requires the Illinois State Board of Elections (ISBE) to: Post an application for a vote by mail ballot on its website; Modify the online voter registra-tion system to allow a new registrant to apply for a VBM ballot when completing the online registration;   Provide notice to each election authority about what it must do to comply with the new law and; Adopt emergency rules to provide reimbursement for expenses related to the 2020 general election incurred as a result of COVID-19 and the new requirements. “Ensuring voters in Illinois can safely participate in elections is a cor-nerstone of our Democracy,” said Gretchen DeJaynes, Chair of the Illinois Associ-ation of County Clerks and Recorders Legislative Committee. “Expanding vote by mail will allow more people to vote safely and county clerks and election authorities across the state are working to implement this important legislation.”   “With our current public health situation, many people feel uncertain about the prospect of having to vote in person,” said Sen. Linda Holmes (D-Aurora), Assistant Majority Leader and Senate Democratic Women’s Caucus Chairwoman. “We just marked the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote, which boosted participation in elections. Now if we can provide safety and comfort to anyone with an at-risk condition to be able to vote by mail, it will be another step forward in in-creasing voter turnout so everyone can make their voice heard.” The new laws take effect immediately.

MEMORARE Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine interces-sion was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, be-fore thee I stand, sinful and sor-rowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my peti-tions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. ARV

Church-Led Repentance Walk   Juneteenth (June 19th) looked different in Bridgeport this year. In response to recent acts of racial injustice, several churches in Bridgeport chose to recognize Juneteeth with a Re-pentance Walk. The walk began at Donovan Park and progressed up Halsted, stopping at the 11th Ward Democratic office, at 35th street, and at the 9th District Police Department. At each location, local church leaders prayed for repentance from different aspects of racism and sought God’s help to bring His righteousness and justice to our neighborhood and city. Over 100 people joined this public prayer.  At the Alderman’s Office, Pastor Zach Savella Stallard of Cornerstone Anglican Church

recalled how historic Chicago politics were birthed from Bridgeport, and how many policies from these leaders and groups neglected certain communities. He led the walkers in prayers of repentance. Father Francis Li from St. Therese and St. Barbara Catholic Parish led in prayer for our elected officials, asking God to give them wisdom that would bring love, peace, and hope to our community.   Pastor Kensen Lam of Park Community Church prayed, reminded the group of the Biblical teaching that every person is created in the image of God. This requires that every life should be valued, not just those most similar or agreeable to our own. Marcus Lewis, a resident of Bridgeport, prayed that we would have compassion on all people as our neighbor, like the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37).   In front of the 9th District Police Department, Pastor Luke Dudenhofer of New Life Community Church thanked the police for their service and reminded those gathered of the Biblical teaching to submit to authority. He also stated that where leaders behave incorrectly, the church must take a stand. In a prayer of repentance, he said, “When authority turns to oppressor, we have fallen short.” Officer Sabrina King, CPD Faith Based Liaison, escorted the members of the walk and said a prayer of hope. 9th District CAPS Officer Jason Sollis and 9th District Commander Don Jerome were also present to support the safety of this event. The walk concluded at McGuane Park where this group symbolically gathered around a simple wooden cross. Leaders again addressed the call for Christians to lead the way in racial healing and rec-onciliation.   Dudenhofer, a grateful Bridgeport resident since 2001, addressed the history of segregation on which Bridgeport was settled. From the earliest years, Bridgeport has been fashioned around the idea of “otherizing” people, whether ethnic groups or races. Pastor Nicolette “Nic” Penaranda of First Trinity Lutheran Church added to this, saying Bridgeport has been known as a “sun-down town” for people of color. The existence of the Dan Ryan expressway, which was built to separate white Bridgeport from black Bronzeville, is also a monument to the history of racism long-settled in the neigh-borhood. Through complacency, Penaranda said, both blacks and whites have contributed to the existence of racism today. For this, “We repent because we have inherited the sins of our ancestors and are actively seeking the redemption that God offers.”   Pastor Mark Chan of Urban Voice Community Church, speaking of his own experience, said many Chinese-speaking immigrants did not have good experiences with other races when they arrived in Bridgeport. Because of this, “We have become concerned with our own self-preservation only… of this we must repent.”   Pastor Michael Neal of Glorious Light Church in Bronzeville expressed the pain he has felt over unjust and violent acts carried out toward African-American people. “Image how it feels to wonder if you’re next,” he said. “I ask of my brothers and sisters to not just lament with me, because I’m hurting, but to use your voice and to declare that as children of God, we will not succumb to the evil that the world wants us to succumb to.” Lam followed this with a message of hope, “When Jesus went to the cross, He said the sin in our hearts, the sin in our society is not too great for Him.”   To learn more about next steps, find resources to help you grow, and watch the recorded livestream of the Repentance Walk, please visit https://www.praybridgeport.com The walk leaders are grateful for all the support from churches in-volved, neighbors along the route, the Alderman’s Office, 9th District, and Park District. Thank you!
