What I remember most from that week was that my counselor French braided my hair one day and I thought it looked so nice. The summer I was 8, my friend Lori and I loved the camp songs. We sang them the entire drive home and all summer long. But by the time school started we forgot many of the words. When I was 10, I stayed for an entire week for the first time. I remember being scared but I also remember Bible studies, how we sat in a circle and how we talked an awful lot about creation. The next year, Lori and I were obsessed with the craft room. That year the Bible studies were centered around baptism, so we made little clay doves and painted them to take home. I treasured that dove until it broke one year at college. The summer I was 14 was my favorite year as a camper. Lori and I brought our friend Sabrina with and the three of us became great friends with the other girls in our cabin. We played lots of volleyball and spent most afternoons swimming, but what I really remember best is our counselor, Julie. Julie would talk to us about anything and seemed really interested in our lives. She led amazing Bible studies that really influenced the three of us. Julie was from our hometown and was a member of the same church Lori, Sabrina and I went to. We would see her every holiday when she came home from college and we would talk to her about our teachers at school and what was going on in our lives. Julie encouraged us to join our church’s youth group and thanks to her, I have lots of memories of bonfires and mission trips. Lori and I both started working at camp when we were 16 as junior counselors. The relationships I formed with the college age staff helped me decide where to go to college, what to major in, to join the Christian groups on campus. When I arrived at Luther Seminary, I even already had a couple friends from camp who were also students. That first year at Luther Point, all I really got out of it was that French braids and swimming were cool. But because I went every year, because the people I met influenced me so much, I made very different choices than I might have otherwise. I can honestly say that Bible camp was the biggest influence in my faith life as I was growing up. Many of you are in the middle of considering if you should send your children to Bible Camp this summer. There are so many awesome camp programs for kids of all ages. There is even a family camp and a grandparent and grandchild camp. If you are interested about learning more, talk to Pastor Erin. Camp is expensive, but scholarships are available! We hope to see your children at Luther Point this summer! Blessings, Pastor Erin

MAY 2015

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The first time I attended Bible Camp, I was 7. My friend Lori asked me in gym class if I wanted to go with her

that summer. I shrugged and said, “Sure”. What I remember most from that week was that my counselor

French braided my hair one day and I thought it looked so nice. The summer I was 8, my friend Lori and I

loved the camp songs. We sang them the entire drive home and all summer long. But by the time school

started we forgot many of the words.

When I was 10, I stayed for an entire week for the first time. I remember being scared but I also remember

Bible studies, how we sat in a circle and how we talked an awful lot about creation. The next year, Lori and I

were obsessed with the craft room. That year the Bible studies were centered around baptism, so we made

little clay doves and painted them to take home. I treasured that dove until it broke one year at college.

The summer I was 14 was my favorite year as a camper. Lori and I brought our friend Sabrina with and the

three of us became great friends with the other girls in our cabin. We played lots of volleyball and spent

most afternoons swimming, but what I really remember best is our counselor, Julie. Julie would talk to us

about anything and seemed really interested in our lives. She led amazing Bible studies that really

influenced the three of us.

Julie was from our hometown and was a member of the same church Lori, Sabrina and I went to. We would

see her every holiday when she came home from college and we would talk to her about our teachers at

school and what was going on in our lives. Julie encouraged us to join our church’s youth group and thanks

to her, I have lots of memories of bonfires and mission trips.

Lori and I both started working at camp when we were 16 as junior counselors. The relationships I formed

with the college age staff helped me decide where to go to college, what to major in, to join the Christian

groups on campus. When I arrived at Luther Seminary, I even already had a couple friends from camp who

were also students.

That first year at Luther Point, all I really got out of it was that French braids and swimming were cool. But

because I went every year, because the people I met influenced me so much, I made very different choices

than I might have otherwise. I can honestly say that Bible camp was the biggest influence in my faith life as I

was growing up.

Many of you are in the middle of considering if you should send your children to Bible Camp this summer.

There are so many awesome camp programs for kids of all ages. There is even a family camp and a

grandparent and grandchild camp. If you are interested about learning more, talk to Pastor Erin. Camp is

expensive, but scholarships are available! We hope to see your children at Luther Point this summer!

Blessings,

Pastor Erin

BLESSING BOWL

MILESTONE

Milestone Blessing Bowls

are designed to remind

us of those meaningful

moments that make up our lives. Our 1st Graders

and their parents are brought together to have a

conversation about how God has blessed them.

These blessings take many forms and can be

viewed in many ways. Each child (with their

parents) then paints stones for their bowls that will

remind them of ways to look for God’s Blessings.

This year our 1st Grade Students celebrating the

Blessing Bowl Milestone are:

Henry Gigure, Nova Griffin,

Isabelle Oswald & Grant Stojan

An example of a blessing bowl will be available for

you to see during fellowship on May 10.

OUTREACH

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY 2015

Plans for our 2015 trip to Luck, Wisconsin are well under way, but it is not too late to

participate. Whether you come on the trip for the entire week or a few days, help with

the wall build or just participate in a fundraiser, anyone and everyone’s help is needed

to make this years’ trip a successful one!

This year we will be working on a home in Luck, WI. We plan to leave the church later

in the afternoon on Sunday, July 5 and return in the afternoon of Friday, July 10.

Anyone 14 years of age and older may attend. Can’t stay the whole week? NO PROBLEM! We have many

who will only be coming a few days and some who will even just come up for the day. Since the worksite is

so close, the options are endless!! Please consider joining us.

FUNDRAISING!

We are currently selling hand-made step stools for $15 – purchase yours soon as they are going quickly.

Starting Sunday, May 17 we will be selling 2x4’s, to be used to build the walls of the home, which you can

purchase to write a message on to the family. Whether it’s a Bible passage, or words of encouragement – it’s

up to YOU! It’s a great way to help fund our trip and send a special message to the family. We also encourage

anyone interested in helping to support someone who is attending the trip. Sponsorship forms can be found

in the newsletter and in future bulletins as well.

Can’t go on the trip? Maybe helping with the wall build would be something you could do instead. We will

be building the walls for the home in the west parking lot of the church on Tuesday, June 24 [rain date will be

Wednesday, June 25]. Save the date[s] and watch for more details to come.

JOIN US!

Please consider joining us in helping a family in need. Sign up today! There is a sign-up sheet in the Commons

at the Church at the Information Center. Our next meeting is Sunday, May 3 at 6:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall.

Contact Gary Baribeau or Robin Arneson if you have any questions.

Our Mission Trip has many goals: to help construct a Habitat house, to provide a place for our youth to learn

THE BOOK NOOK

By Kathy Hunter

As May 7 is the National Day of

Prayer and because Pastor Erin

has invited each of us to join her in a commitment

to daily prayer, the book cart in the Commons this

month will feature a variety of books on prayer.

Books are:

The Power of Prayer in a Believer’s Life

A collection of sermons on both private and

community prayer by the great 19th century

preacher Charles Spurgeon, who reminds us that

God actually commands us to pray. Spurgeon

urges Christians to approach God’s throne of grace

with “devout joyfulness.”

Prayers That Avail Much, For Fathers

Sample prayers for specific situations and

concerns, heavily drawn from Scripture.

How to Pray

Preparation for prayer, handling distractions,

questioning God, and Jesus’ prayer habits are

among the topics.

Prayer that Works

Insights from Elijah and author Jill Briscoe’s own

experiences. “What do you do with tired bodies

and wandering thoughts? . . . Praying about your

praying is a great idea!” Remember that Jesus

Himself is praying for us.

Famous Unanswered Prayers

After suggesting some barriers to answered

prayer, the author analyzes various unanswered

prayers in the Bible, such as those of Moses; Elijah;

and the rich man in hades who wanted Lazarus to

warn his family.

Luther and Prayer

Martin Luther’s evolving understanding of the

need for and practice of prayer as he studied The

Lord’s Prayer, the Psalms and other Scripture.

Whole Prayer

“To learn of prayer is at the same time to learn of

faith. This learning begins with the mind and ends

with the soul,” writes Walter Wangerin, Jr. In very

‘readable” style, he offers many insights on the four

parts of prayer: We speak; God listens; God speaks;

we listen.

The Way of the Heart

Author Henri Nouwen cautions that prayer is not

merely speaking with God and expecting an

answer, and not meditating about God as “a

subject that needs to be scrutinized or analyzed.”

Rather, the best form of prayer is “the inner

experience of God’s shepherding action in

whatever we think, say or do.” Nouwen describes

how solitude, silence and short, simple prayers can

lead to that experience.

I’ve Got to Talk to Somebody God

Like Nouwen, Majorie Holmes sometimes felt

surrounded by meaningless noise. But instead of

practicing solitude, she found help in spontaneous

“conversations with God” during a myriad of

common situations.

52 Simple Ways to Teach Your Child to Pray

“Teaching your child to pray is one of the most

important things that you will ever do.” Short

prayers interspersed with suggestions for making

them relevant to a child’s concerns.

How to Have Family Prayers

Create a legacy of family prayer times, to bring

greater love and understanding for each family

member.

Hello, God

Pictures and simple words help young children

focus their thoughts on God and “make praying as

enjoyable as playing.”

Dear God, I’m Waiting

Young kids talk to God about waiting – waiting in

line, waiting to grow up, and more.
