MT. ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH September 2015
505 13th St. S. Hudson, WI 54016
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
So much is going on this September! Rally Day, Sunday school starting, Confirmation starting, our new
Prayer Bible Study and our new Faith and Film Bible Study. September is also the start of our Stewardship
Season.
Our theme this year is “Loaves and Fish”. We will be exploring the story of Jesus feeding the 5000 and other
stories about abundance to talk about how small things can lead to great change. Just like Jesus took only a
few loaves of bread and a few fish to feed a great many people, we join together to accomplish great
change in our community and in the world. This Stewardship season we will spend time celebrating all the
work that our small congregation does and explore ways for us to continue to grow in our giving and
serving in the years to come!
I ran across this old story that I wanted to share with you this month;
Long ago, in a small Italian town in wine country, there lived an old priest. The priest had been a member of
the community for years and was beloved by everyone in town. Eventually, as he became older, it was time
for him to retire. Several of his parishioners said, “We have no money that we might give to buy Father a
retirement present to show him how much we love and appreciate him, but we do have several wineries in
town and each of us has some wine we could spare.” So they found a large wine barrel, which the men of
the church hauled from house to house in the village, and each family poured in some of their own wine
until the barrel was filled.
The parishioners presented the large barrel of wine to the old priest, whose eyes filled with tears over their
generosity. Several evenings later, the old priest, remembering their generosity and kindness, decided to
have some wine with his dinner. As he opened the spigot, his glass was filled, not with wine, but with water!
You see, everyone had thought that his or her water would not be noticed in so much wine.
This story is amusing, but it also teaches us a valuable lesson this Stewardship Season; that each of us
matters and what each of us contributes to our church, (both financially and of our time and talents) reflects
on the outcome.
Blessings,
Pastor Erin Nelson

THE BOOK NOOK
By: Kathy Hunter
Among several biographies
and memoirs in the Mt. Zion library is Rebel
With a Cause, by Franklin Graham, son of
evangelist Billy Graham. A self-described rebel
who was once kicked out of school, Franklin
says God had His hand on him throughout
those difficult years.
A good portion of the book
is devoted to how he came
to lead Samaritan’s Purse
and how that Christian
relief organization works.
Though its popular
“Operation Christmas
Child” shoebox project is
not mentioned. Graham credits Bob Pierce,
founder of both World Vision and Samaritan’s
Purse, with the faith-building philosophy of
carefully calculating how much support can be
raised for a particular project, and then
promising more than that. What people can
plan logistically to carry out is human ability;
the extra is “when you pray and leave room for
God” to fill the gap “between what’s possible
and what He wants done that’s impossible.”
Franklin’s mother, Ruth Bell Graham, is the
subject of A Time for Remembering.
Biographer Patricia Daniels Cornwell describes
Ruth’s childhood in China where her father was
a medical missionary; her early ambition to
remain single for life as a missionary to Tibet;
and her adult life in the spotlight as her
husband became more and more well-known.
Billy Graham’s autobiography, Just As I Am, is
also in our library.

THE POWER OF PRAYER
One of the privileges of being part of the
body of Christ is the opportunity to share in
the joy and the sorrow of others. If you have
a special prayer request or would like to place
someone on the prayer chain, please call the
church office at 715-386-5409 or the prayer
chain coordinator, Joyce Johnson, and we will
make sure to add that person to our prayer
list.
We have two prayer chains at Mt. Zion,
1) You receive a phone call with the
prayer concern
2) You receive an email with the prayer
concern
If you would like to be a part of either of
these “chains”, please call the office and
indicate which would be your preference.

OUTREACH
As the school year
begins, the
backpack

resume. Thank-
you to the people who have donated
backpacks this summer. There is now an ample
supply to begin this year. Last year the need
at Rock Elementary was the greatest it has
been since the beginning of the program. It
will be a few weeks before we know what the
need will be this year. Please watch for the
bags and sign-up sheet in mid-September,
then remember the children in our community
who are hungry and if you can, fill a bag or two
each month.

HOME AND HOSPITAL VISITATION
NOTICE
There is some bad news about our new pastor!
She is not psychic!
Pastor Erin is always more than happy to visit
anyone who is homebound or in a hospital or
a nursing home (or for any other reason), you
just have to ask her! Pastor Erin isn’t always
aware of who is ill or homebound and would
appreciate your help. If you would like a visit
for any reason, please contact Pastor Erin and
ask for one.
For privacy reasons, Pastor Erin asks that you
or an immediate family member request a visit.
Please do not rely on a friend or neighbor. Lots
of people are private about their medical
concerns. For that reason, Pastor Erin would
appreciate a personal request for visits.
Please, let Pastor Erin know if you need a visit!
She would love to serve in any way possible.
Please contact the church office (715) 386-
5409 or sent Pastor an email at

HOPITALITY TEAM NEEDS AND
INFORMATION
The Hospitality Team Ministry is voluntary,
consisting of organized teams of Mt Zion
members and regular attendees. Each team
remains together as a group, and includes a
Team Lead and 8-12 people. The ministry
team provides the following functions:
Hospitality Team Lead (one for each
team)
Greeter (welcome people to Mt Zion,
guide inside building, provide
information for opportunities and
services)
Usher (pass out bulletins, assist with
seating, oversee Sanctuary and
Narthex during worship, straighten
worship area after services)
Scripture Reader (read assigned text
during worship)
Communion Assistant (assist with
distribution of Holy Communion)
Sound Person (have very basic
understanding of sound system in case
adjustments are needed before or
during worship)
Opener (responsible for opening the
facility before the first service)
Closer (responsible for closing the
facility after the last service)
We are in need of people to volunteer for the
10:30 worships. If any of the above interests
you, please see Kristen Johnson or Pastor Erin
for more information.
There are 8 teams and each team is scheduled
for one Sunday a month.
BUILDING USAGE
It’s that time of year when our building will
become busy with fun events happening on a
daily basis. The Council would like to take this
time to remind you of the guidelines of
reserving space if the need arises.
When someone outside the church wishes to
use our facility the BOARD FOR OUTREACH
will take the request and determine if the event
meets the guidelines set forth by the 2013-14
council. If it is approved the person or group
that wishes to use the facility will contact the
secretary to determine if the space is still
available and is given proper paper work to fill
out.
Once an organization is approved – more
often than not, if they request usage again, the
secretary has the ability to give approval. If
there are any questions, the secretary will
contact Outreach for approval.
When an event is scheduled that is church
related, or church member requested, the
secretary can schedule on the spot. They will
still need to fill out paper work and/or double
check to make sure that spot is available.
When events are planned – ex. Book Club, that
are ongoing, [monthly, weekly, daily event] –
You need to let the secretary know so this
event can be repeated on the calendar
monthly. You do need to contact the secretary
when events are cancelled or dates/time
changed.
