ORIGINAL 43RD STREET LOBBY - 1954

The MANUFACTURERS TRUST COMPANY BUILDING was designed by Skidmore Owings & Merrill and opened in October 1954. This

lobby served as the elevator lobby for the upper floors and as a vestibule for the reception area into the safe deposit boxes. The lobbies

were separated by a clear glass partition and door. The illuminated ceiling and gray marble wall extend from the elevator lobby into the

reception area.

43RD STREET LOBBY - CIRCA 1990

Through several mergers, MANUFACTURERS TRUST became a part of Chemical Bank. In 1994 the first floor was divided into two spaces.

The space to the left in the photo above served as a bank entrance and ATM lobby for Chemical Bank while the space beyond the glass

partition above was converted to retail space.

Chemical Bank became part of Chase Manhattan Bank in 1996. The interior of the building began public hearings in 1990 and were granted

landmark status on February 15, 2011.

EXISTING 43RD STREET LOBBY

At some point between 1994 and the interior landmark designation in 2011, the original glass wall was removed and replaced with a painted drywall partition.

The hollow metal door and frame served as a second means of egress and as a back of house entrance for employees into the retail space beyond.

The door above served as access to the elevator lobby when the building functioned as a bank. The space beyond the door is now retail and is currently

occupied by the North Face Store. The retail space does not require egress through this door and access is no longer permitted. Due to the obsolete nature of

the door, the owner would like to remove the door and frame and infill the opening with attic stock of the original marble.

The existing reception desk is not original to the building and was installed circa 1994 when the first floor was divided into two retail spaces. It now serves as security check-in

for the upper floors. The desk has become antiquated due to the need for higher security and does not allow equipment to be concealed such as badging equipment, computer,

phone, etc. The base is also open to view and wiring is unsightly to arriving guests.
