Zlín Film Festival – International Film Festival for Children and Youth in Zlín is the largest and oldest festival of its kind in the world. It was founded within the environs of the Zlín Film Studio, which at the time was one of the biggest European producers of films targeted at children and youth. Zlín‘s filmmakers established the festival in 1961 primarily to introduce their own productions for domestic audiences.

The Bata company created the film studios in Zlín as the center for the production of their advertising and popular educational films. As of the 1940s, however, the studios started making animated films and then moved on to live-action and combined films. Of all of the outstanding filmmakers working in Zlín, we‘ll name the world-renowned Karel Zeman.

The present-day Zlín Film Festival is a major international cultural event with both a film and supporting programme aimed primarily at children, youth, and families, but also at students, film professionals and film enthusiasts. Every year, as May turns into June, the festival is visited by more than 100,000 visitors who have the chance to select from over 350 films from 50 countries from all over the world. The Zlín Film Festival is an active member of the ECFA (European Children‘s Film Association)and a member of the CIFEJ (International Centre of Films for Children and Young People).

The Zlín Film Festival provides an opportunity for networking and for the origin of co-production projects. Film professionals are offered the possibility to view more than 120 new feature films from all over the world. The festival also provides a platform for meetings and establishing contacts for representatives of film festivals. A prominent part of the industry programme is the Rainbow Marble, a project focused on film marketing with the subheading, “The Art of Selling Film“: Professional workshops deal with marketing strategies used by filmmakers to promote their films and is aimed at the professional public and students. The festival also organizes seminars on social and prevention programmes aimed at children and young people.

SUPPORTING PROGRAMMEZFF‘s supporting programme is enjoyed each year by more than 60,000 children and adults. Of the supporting programme‘s events, which regularly number around a hundred, we‘ll at least mention several of the most important ones:

STARS AT ZLÍN FILM FESTIVAL

It‘s been twelve years since ZLÍN FILM FESTIVAL began showcasing profiles of European film. Although it is a non-competition section, it occupies a leading role in the international film program. It is crucial for the supporting program, the composition of juries, as wellas for the participation of foreign delegations and guests. Throughout its existence festival-goers have been presented with films from countries such as France, Russia, the Netherlands, the Baltic States, Spain, Great Britain, Italy, Ireland, Denmark and Poland.ZLÍN FILM FESTIVAL 2015 will focus on Germany.

The film programme for this section must present a nation‘s cinema in its entirety and must emphasize the best of that nation‘s children’s and teen films. Because the festival is also intended for adult audiences, Zlín‘s festival also includes here a minisection of selected essential works that have influenced world cinema.

German culture will be represented not only in film, but also by a rich supporting program showcasing German music, dance, literature and cuisine. Citizens of different nations will have the opportunity to develop mutual friendly relations through cultural performances, thematic evenings and workshops, and meetings. The Zlín Film Festival will screen more than four dozen German films within the film programme. An integral part of this showcase will be the attendance of many German filmmakers and actors, and culturaland educational representatives. These figures will present their films to audiences, sit in professional juries, or take part in workshops, seminars and discussions.

DAYS OF GERMAN CINEMA

The festival‘s competition is focused on live-action films for children and young people, European debuts, animation productions and student film.

The main criterion in choosing movies for the feature film competition is the personality of a child and/or adolescent. While competitive children‘s films are primarily meant to be high-quality entertainment, the sections devoted to young people and to European debuts are devoted to issues pertaining to young people in various life situations. They are aimed at exploring, reflecting upon the contemporary world of young people, and at finding one‘s self.

Short animated films up to 15 minutes in length are also aimed at children and present current trends in global animated productions.

Zlín Dog is a re-introduced competitive section of student films which should continue on as a permanent part of this festival focused on young people.

The non-competitive sections adhere to the established theme, i.e. a child and/or young person in the main role. The informative section Panorama offers a large collection of films that have been awarded at other festivals or that have something interesting to present, such as introducing new and refreshing views of the lives of children and adolescents. The idea behind the non-competitive sections is to provide a look at quality film productions for children and young people made over the past year.

Of note is the section called Night Horizons, which deals with controversial, provocative and very current topics in the lives of young people, such as sex, sexual orientation, drug issues, working with the concepts morality, values, social adaptation, and similar themes.

Young Stars is a very popular non-competitive section that focuses on shooting stars from all around the world by introducing their new projects and inviting them to Zlín.

Another integral part of the festival is the presentation of Czech film productions.
