the book of life and blessings.

For this we are truly thrilled

and grateful. But the latter

does not mean that we stop to

gloat in our extraordinary

achievement while we pat our-

selves on the back. Nor do we

take a break to contemplate

new goals and objectives in life.

Unlike the Olympic gold medal-

ist who may bask in the glory of

his few moments of fame for

the rest of his life, the day after

Simchas Torah it is Torah all-

over-again, much as the day

after Yom Kippur it's Teshuvah

all-over-again.

It would help to think of the

Jewish circular routine, as a

continuous spiral, whose one

end is planted in the ground

below and the other rooted in

heaven above.

True, we do move in circular

motions, but we are continually

moving upward – higher and

higher towards our infinite

Divine source.

So, this Simchas Torah, as you

dance in circles with the Torah

scroll in hand, close your eyes

and feel yourself ascend the

eternal spiritual spiral.

I look forward to seeing you

during this joyous holiday!

Rabbi Mendy Bukiet

a

The month of

Tishrei encom-

passes the en-

tire spectrum of

the human ex-

perience. As

the month

steadily pro-

gresses, we move from the

state of introspection of Rosh

Hashanah; to the state of emo-

tion of Yom Kippur; to the

state of action associated with

the holiday of Sukkos. The

action associated with the holi-

day of Sukkos includes the

building of booths – known as

Sukkos – for outdoor dwelling,

as well as the binding and

bringing together of the four

species in a special ritual.

The holiday of Sukkos is also

associated with a peculiar cir-

cular rhythm. This phenome-

non is introduced subtly with

one circle around the Bimah

each day of Sukkos while

sporting the Lulav and Esrog in

hand. The one circle soon

increases to seven on Hoshana

Rabba. It then erupts into full-

fledged dancing, round and

round, on Simchas Torah. The

circular dancing can last for

hours.

Why do we celebrate the very

conclusion of this lofty month

with a flurry of circular move-

ments that seem to take us to

the same place we began?

Shouldn't the New Year be

symbolized by forward motion

rather than cyclical?

Not only do we move in circles

on the day of Simchas Torah,

we seem to read in circles as

well. Upon the conclusion of

the dancing with the Torah on

Simchas Torah, we actually

unfurl the Torah scroll and

read the final portion of V'Zos

HaBrachah, completing thereby

the yearly cycle of weekly To-

rah readings. Then in true cir-

cular fashion we start all over

again, as we read Beraishis

from the beginning of the

Torah. This symbolizes the

eternal cycle of Torah which

has neither beginning nor end –

the Torah's infinite quality.

Before we can congratulate

ourselves on having completed

an entire cycle of Torah study,

the first book is started again,

reminding us of the task ahead

– that the need to study the

Torah remains just as if it were

newly transmitted.

This notion holds true of our

attitude regarding our accom-

plishments in the month of

Tishrei. Of course, having

prayed on Rosh Hashanah and

Yom Kippur, with intense pas-

sion and fervor, we feel accom-

plished – we know that our

Teshuvah has been graciously

accepted and that we have

been inscribed and sealed in

Chabad’s twelfth year of

Rosh Hashanah & Yom

Kippur services imbued

many with a sense of

belonging, vibrancy, and

warmth. Chabad was

proud to hold services

this year at the Fete Ca-

tering Ballroom at The

Polo Grill to better ac-

commodate the large

amount of congregants

attending from all over

Manatee County. It was

heartening to see so

many familiar faces at

services with lots of

newcomers as well.

The warm, familial, and

inspirational atmosphere

combined with the

beautiful and comforta-

ble venue and delicious

kosher catered food

provided a perfect fu-

sion of the spiritual and

physical for all around

fabulous High Holiday

Services.

Chabad’s annual Slurpee

contest and Ckids pro-

gram was an added mo-

tivation for children to

attend services.

Food art, contests,

prayers, songs, auctions,

and a moon bounce

made for very exciting

Ckids programs.

A “Taste of Rosh

Hashanah” was held on

the first night of Rosh

Hashanah. A buffet re-

ception ushered in the

New Year with tradi-

tional foods eaten on

Rosh Hashanah. Guests

enjoyed sushi, apples and

honey, Rosh Hashanah

salad with pomegranates,

sweet Challah rolls, and

more.

On Rosh Hashanah

evening, congregants

gathered around a near-

by pond on Lakewood

Ranch Main Street to

perform the ancient cus-

tom of Tashlich, in which

pockets are emptied of

all crumbs thrown sym-

bolic of the eradication

of sins.

Delicious “Wraps Kid-

dush luncheons were

featured after the day

services as well.

The Yom Kippur break

fast was a perfect end to

Yom Kippur with

great food and great

people!

for allowing us to use

their facilities and to

their wonderful staff in-

for their patience and

terrific service.

The feeling of all Jews

being one family was felt

strongly throughout the

services and Kiddush's.

We are blessed to usher

with such a wonderful

community.

N E W ! R C S ’ S A R T & S O U L C O U R S E

This course is sponsored by the Jewish

Federation of Sarasota-Manatee.

The Jewish Learning In-

stitute’s newest course

examines the soul and its

journey through ancient and eye-opening

Talmudic teachings.

Some questions are universal to the hu-

man experience. Is there life after death?

What happens to the soul after we die?

What is it like for those who have trav-

eled over to the Great Beyond? These

are but a few of the questions addressed

in the newest course from the Rohr Jew-

ish Learning Institute (JLI).

Beginning Wednesday, October 28, JLI

will present The Journey of the Soul, the

institute’s new six-session fall 2015

course. Course will be taught at 7:30 pm

by Rabbi Mendy Bukiet at The Chabad

House.

“There’s a significant amount of confu-

sion in the Jewish community about what

happens to us when we die,” explains

Rabbi Naftali Silberberg, lead editor for

Art is not only for

artists. Not every-

one is a world-

class painter or a virtuoso violinist; but

the greatest art form is life itself. Art is a

way of seeing the world, interacting with

the world, and transforming the materials

of nature and of the human experience

into something that is more useful, more

beautiful, more meaningful.

Judaism is concerned with morality, social

justice, the pursuit of wisdom and

knowledge, loving our fellows, serving

God, and fulfilling our purpose in Crea-

tion. But what about creativity and aes-

thetics? Are these Jewish concerns? Art

& Soul is a seven-part course exploring

seven art forms— painting, music, litera-

ture, dance, architecture, clothing design,

and the culinary arts - from the perspec-

tive of Jewish teaching and Jewish life.

Seen through the lens of the Torah, the

teachings of the sages, and the writings of

the Chasidic masters, we gain a deeper

appreciation of the inner dynamics of

these seven art forms and how they can be

applied to enhance our daily lives. Lessons

also includes an interactive workshop, in

which the ideas and methodologies

explored in the lesson will also be experi-

enced firsthand by class participants.

While our explorations focus on art in its

various forms, the discussions they spark

touch upon some of the most fundamental

questions to occupy the human mind.

What is beauty? Where in our psyches do

our most deeply-held convictions reside,

and how do we access them? Is there

anything that we, mere creatures of an

infinite Creator, can create that is truly

original and significant? How do we weath-

er the ups and downs in our relationships

with those closest to us? How do our

personal goals and aspirations live within

the larger context of society, environment,

and Creation? Why do we get so bogged

down in the minutiae of physical life? How

do we achieve self-transformation—or is

this even possible, or desirable, to achieve?

The Jewish Women’s Circle of Chabad of

Bradenton & Lakewood Ranch will present

these seven monthly classes beginning on

Tuesday, November 17 at 7:30 pm and

taught by Chanie Bukiet. Special thanks to

Tami Wankoff of Contingency Telecom

Auditing IMO Ellie Wankoff for co-

sponsoring this course.

the course from JLI’s headquarters in

New York. “Many ideas that originate in

other religions and belief systems have

been popularized in the media and are

taken for granted by unassuming Jews.

In Journey of the Soul, we clear up these

misconceptions and introduce an authen-

tically Jewish approach which is both sur-

prising and refreshing.”

Journey of the Soul provides spiritual in-

sight into the soul’s journey through life,

death, and beyond, as well as ancient Jew-

ish wisdom that sheds light on the philo-

sophical, emotional, and practical aspects

of coping with death and mourning.

“Science knows very little about the soul

and what happens to it post mortem,’

says Rabbi Mendy. “It’s about what is

truly valuable and meaningful in life which

is relevant to everyone, and many

in Manatee County have expressed their

curiosity to learn about the topic.”

Professor Sheldon Solomon of Skidmore

College, who co-authored the book The

Worm at the Core: On the Role of Death

in Life commented about the JLI

course: “This course strikes me as a very

fine juxtaposition of ancient theological

wisdom with contemporary empirical sci-

ence. My sense is that this will be an inter-

esting and rewarding educational and per-

sonal experience.”

The course is being offered in joint spon-

sorship with the Washington School of

Psychiatry, enabling medical and mental

health professionals to earn up to 7.5

AMA, APA, CBBS, and ASWB continuing

education credits for their participation.

Like all previous JLI programs, Journey of

the Soul is designed to appeal to people at

all levels of Jewish knowledge, including

those without any prior experience or

background in Jewish Learning.

Interested students may call 752-3030 or
