• Help Kids Say ‘Thanks’ for Holiday Gifts •
• Trivia Test •
DONNA’S DAY: CREATIVE FAMILY FUNBy Donna Erickson
Gifts, meals, activities, memories. It’s that time of the new year to share a big “thanks” to those who made the December holidays special for our families and kids. By doing so, we model to the youngest generation the habit of expressing appreciation to others. Hopefully they’ll grow into the “saying thanks” habit without our prodding.
According to Amy Jaworsky, editor for the Hearst Corporation and mom of two school-age girls, 13 and 8: “Acknowledging someone’s generosity is a reminder to ourselves of all we have to be grateful for. The more we realize how lucky we are, the more apt we are to want to deserve it by being better people.” Good words for all, not just for kids.
Teaching her daughters to express thanks to others started on a practical level when her oldest, Presley, turned 4. “I was standing in the background at gift-opening time at her birthday party when the eager guests circled the birthday girl. It felt like a feeding frenzy,” she says. “They closed in, and it moved fast. With all the excitement, Presley tore through the wrappings, so it was hard to get a complete list of who gave what.”
That’s when Amy came up with an idea the following year to ask gift-givers to stand with her daughter while she opened their present, so she could snap a photo
of them as they posed with the gift. Through the years, she has seen how both the giver and receiver feel special when they capture the moment together.
When it comes time to say “thanks,” she has no worries making sure the right card is with the right gift. “I have the evidence in my camera,” she says. “I print out the photos and we mount them to simple cards with envelopes. As my daughters grow older, they can express a more detailed ‘thanks,’” she adds.
Here are more saying “thank you” ideas:--If your child received a holiday gift from someone
who wasn’t present, take a photo of your child enjoying building with the new blocks, dressing a new doll or shooting a puck with the new hockey stick. Print it, and mount it on a card with a personally written thank you.
--Email or text a short video of your child saying “thanks” and using the gift.
--Encourage your children to draw a picture of the gift. If they aren’t writing yet, let them dictate as you write their “thanks.”

• Good for You and Others Too •VETERANS POSTby Freddy Groves
Have you broken your New Year’s resolutions yet? It’s not too late to try again. But this time, why not go with just two? One for you, and one for others.
Here are a few for you:* Give the local American Legion or Veterans of
Foreign Wars a try if you’re not a regular member. You’ll get out of it what you put in. Participate in the events and help with their goals, especially if they involve helping other veterans.
* Organize your paperwork so that when the time comes, your final wishes will be known. See a lawyer and make a will, then gather your military paperwork, and let someone know where it is. Include your DD-214.
* Ask questions to be sure you’re getting all the benefits you’re entitled to. Home loans, education and medical are just the tip of the iceberg.
And a few for others:* Plan a visit to the closest Department of Veterans
Affairs hospital to see how you can help. Contact
voluntary services and see what they need. If you’re not near a medical center, search online for “veterans helping veterans.”
* If you served during a war period, look into adding your story to the Veterans History Project. The stories of veterans are valuable (and so is yours) and can be told in many ways. Go online to www.loc.gov/vets/ and see how how you can participate.
* Decide to be a monthly Secret Santa and anonymously send a grocery store gift card to a veteran you know is struggling, especially if there are kids in the family.
If it seems like some of the ideas above are a combination of good for you and good for others too, you’re right. Sometimes doing for others actually benefits us as well.

• Meatloaf: The Ultimate Comfort Food •
• Moments in time •
KITCHEN DIVABy Angela Shelf Medearis
There’s no disputing the power of food to provide consolation in times of stress, and a classic meatloaf is no exception. There are very few dishes that combine tradition and innovation the way that meatloaf does. My husband, Michael, loves meatloaf, and evidently, he’s not alone.
Statistically, affluent baby boomers order the entree on a regular basis when dining out. Whether it’s made from ground beef combined with pork or veal, or a more modern version featuring ground turkey or chicken, meatloaf is at the top of the list of comfort foods. It’s about time this humble dish got the recognition it deserves.
It takes about 1 1/2 pounds of ground meat to make a meatloaf that serves six people. I’ve found that “marinating” the ground meat in a bowl with 1/4 cup of water, a tablespoon of mild to medium salsa, and a tablespoon each of Worcestershire sauce and steak sauce makes for a moister, more flavorful meatloaf.
I season my meatloaf with salt, pepper, minced bell pepper, garlic, onions and 1/2 of a shredded carrot, along with fresh herbs including parsley, thyme and basil or a tablespoon of dried Italian Seasoning.
A cup of a starch or binder is the next component in a classic meatloaf. I use seasoned breadcrumbs or
crushed crackers, and an egg. A gentle touch when combining the mixture ensures that the meatloaf will be well-seasoned without being tough.
The final step in making a traditional meatloaf is adding the “gravy.” I combine ketchup with salt, pepper and medium salsa or barbecue sauce. I pour off any accumulated fat, and then slather the topping on the meatloaf halfway through the cooking process.
Meatloaf isn’t a complex dish, nor does it make a visually stunning presentation. As a friend of mine once said, “It’s a lot of
meat in a loaf, and you don’t have to chew it very much -- what’s not to like?”
Meatloaf has provided a tasty way to stretch a dollar for generations of American families. In these uncertain economic times, we could all use a plate full of comfort.
MINI-MEATLOAVES
The great thing about this recipe from the Betty Crocker kitchens (www.
bettycrocker.com/recipes) is that the mini meatloaves provide individual servings and are ready in just 30 minutes. This would make a great main-course dish for children or a unique appetizer for a retro recipe party.
1/2 cup ketchup1/2 tablespoon packed brown sugar1 pound lean (at least 80 percent) ground beef1/2 pound ground pork1/2 cup Original Bisquick mix1/4 teaspoon pepper1 small onion, finely chopped (1/4 cup)1 egg
1. Heat oven to 450 F. In small bowl, stir ketchup and brown sugar until mixed; reserve 1/4 cup for topping. In large bowl, stir remaining ingredients and remaining ketchup mixture until well-mixed.
2. Spray 13-by-9-inch pan with cooking spray. Place meat mixture in pan; pat into 12-by-4-inch rectangle. Cut lengthwise down center and then crosswise into sixths to form 12 loaves. Separate loaves, using spatula, so no edges are touching. Brush loaves with reserved 1/4 cup ketchup mixture.
3. Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until loaves are no longer pink in center and meat thermometer inserted in center of loaves reads 160 F. Serves 6.
Substitution: While the mixture of ground beef and pork gives these little loaves a unique flavor, you can also use 1 1/2 pounds of ground beef instead of the mixture.

PAW’S CORNERBy Sam Mazzotta
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Why do cats do what they do? Why do they tear ornaments off the Christmas tree, knock glasses off the coffee table, attack our shoelaces and knead their claws into our sweater? Is there any way to get mine to stop doing, like, all of these things? Sign me -- Frayed Sweater, and Nerves, in Toronto
DEAR FRAYED: After years and years of studying this conundrum, I can honestly say most cats won’t respond to pleas, begging or even treats. Well, sometimes they’ll respond to treats. But they’ll go right back to doing what they enjoy most: destroying all that you love.
I’m being (slightly) sarcastic, of course.Having a cat means making a few
compromises in your life, particularly in the interior-decorating department. It means being more careful about setting expensive
glassware on the countertop. It means a Christmas tree whose bottom third remains undecorated, or adorned with unbreakable, pet-safe ornaments. It means patiently retying your shoelaces after your cat has
pounced on them. It means buying a new sweater every fall, or keeping your favorite ones in a
drawer to wear on special occasions only. The tradeoff, however, is that you have
a companion for many happy years. A cat kneading his or her claws on your sweater while curled up in your lap is an expression
of contentment, an acknowledgment that you’re family. You don’t have to give up all the breakable things that you love in order to live with your cat, you just need to make a few concessions to keep both
your cat and your glassware safe.

SENIOR NEWS LINEBy Matilda Charles
It’s all over the news now that eating a salad every day may help reduce cognitive decline and dementia in seniors. What’s worrisome is that the results of medical research sometimes are splashed in big headlines and that too many people automatically will assume it’s true.
When it comes to understanding research, we need to dig deeper than just the headline.
For example, how long did the study go on? In this case, it was five years. That’s good.
The thinking skills of participants were tested every year. That’s also good.
But was the research done in a controlled environment, such as how many salads did a participant actually eat? In this case, the information was self-reported in a questionnaire. In other words, it might not be true.
And then there’s the bottom line. Did the researchers flatly state that eating salads helps? No, they did not. They said there was an “association,” but they couldn’t rule out other possible reasons.
Color me confused because an article quoting the same study author, basically saying the same thing, appeared back in 2015, and back then it was stated that it’s a mystery.
In this column, I frequently point your attention to the results of research, but each time I advise you to talk to your doctor before you make any changes in your exercise or diet. And I’m doing so again: Before you add extra greens to your diet, consult your doctor, especially if you’re going to add large amounts of kale, lettuce or broccoli, or anything with vitamin K. Vitamin K affects blood clotting, and could cause problems for people already on drugs to decrease the amount of clotting.
In short, beware. Just because you read it in the news doesn’t make it true ... or good for you personally. Ask your doctor.

• If you’re redecorating, take this tip into consideration: To make a space feel more modern, mix metal accents -- for instance, brass hardware with stainless steel appliances! To make a room feel bigger, us a contrasting color on the trim wood to draw the eye up and down. Mirrors multiply light in any room, and open shelving is the ticket in a narrow space, rather than closed cabinets.
• “If you have little kids and are ordering pizza, ask them to double cut the slices. Kids like to have many slices, and it doesn’t really matter how big they are. This way, there’s less waste.” -- T.Y. in New Hampshire
• Keep squirrels away from a bird feeder by greasing the pole with car wax. Hanging by a rope? Not a problem. Thread the rope through a length of PVC pipe and wax that. Problem solved.
• Hair looking faded and dull? Try brewing a cup of chamomile tea! Let it cool and use it to rinse your hair post-shampoo. Don’t rinse out.
• “I buy a nice, but plain smelling lotion from the discount store because the price is great and it leaves my skin feeling soft. I dress it up with a few drops of perfume and essential oils. This saves me a ton of money, and I get it exactly how I like it!” -- F.E. in Kentucky
• Keep a small microfiber cloth in the car. It’s super handy for wiping your eyeglasses off or the inside of your windshield if it gets foggy.

Merritt is a 2 year old sweetie, believed to be Chihuahua with a bit of Yorkie in his scruffy
little face! He comes to us with his friend Mia from a high kill shelter in Kentucky. Although
the two get along fantastically, they do not seem to be bonded and would do fine if
separated into different homes. Merritt is a nice boy who gets along with other dogs, cats and children. He likes to play but also likes to relax. Merritt seems to be house trained but
will also use a potty pad. He’s a cuddly boy who is happy to sit in your lap whenever the opportunity arises.
All dogs are spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm tested negative (age 7 months and older) and microchipped. We do not
ship or transport. A dog’s adoption donation is $200. There is a $5 fee for credit/debit cards.

HOLLYWOOD -- Chris Hemsworth’s biggest moneymakers have been the six films in which he played Thor (2011-2017). Despite the golden touch of director Ron Howard, “In the Heart of the Sea” (2015) cost $100 million and grossed only $94 million. “The Huntsman: Winter War” (2016) cost $115 million and grossed $165 million (which wasn’t a break-even gross). With “Avengers: Infinity War” now completed and due May 4, and the untitled “Avengers” movie currently filming (for a May 2019 premiere), Hemsworth is filling in the gaps with “12 Strong,” with Michael Shannon and “Mom’s” William Fichtner, opening Jan. 19. Also upcoming is “Bad Times at the El Royale,” set in a dilapidated part of the California Lake Tahoe region, with Jeff Bridges as a down-on-his-luck priest.
Another star needing a big hit is Gerard Butler. While “London Has Fallen” (2016) grossed $206 million, “A Family Man” (2017), with Gretchen Mol, Alfred Molina, Allison Brie and Willem Dafoe, made $1.2 million overseas and nothing in the U.S., and “Geostorm” (2017) needed to make double its $120 million cost to turn a profit and only grossed $207 million. Butler will try to change that with the heist/action-thriller “Den of Thieves,” with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, out Jan. 19, and “Hunter Killer,” with Gary Oldman, Billy Bob Thornton, Willem Dafoe and Oscar-winning songwriter and actor Common, opening in 2018.
***Eqyptian singer Shyma was sentenced
to two years in jail and fined 10,000 Eqyptian pounds ($560) for making her music video “I Have Issues,” in which she appeared in scanty underwear and suggestively ate a banana. An Eqyptian court “Had Issues” with her for inciting debauchery and producing a video harming public morality. The director of the video also was fined and given two years in prison, but in true double-standard chauvinism, his sentence was in absentia. They’re both appealing the verdict in a higher court.
***Disney is buying the assets of 21st
Century Fox for a mere $55 billion. That won’t include the famed 20th Century Fox lot, which still will be owned by Rupert Murdoch and has 80 permanent buildings (sound stages and offices) spread over 1.8 million square feet. Currently, “Modern Family, “Fresh Off the Boat,” “The Orville,” “Speechless,” “The Mick” and Ryan Murphy’s “American Crime Story: The Versace Murder,” among others, film there.
In 1956, Fox sold its vast back-lot acreage to cover losses when Elizabeth Taylor’s “Cleopatra” went millions of dollars over budget. The back lot was converted into The Century Plaza Hotel, Century City, with huge office buildings and a huge mall. Now that Disney owns ABC Television, Pixar, The Marvel Universe, the “Star Wars” franchise and more, the only thing Disney has to worry about is 21st Century Fox gobbling up Mickey Mouse!

A SPORTING VIEWBy Mark Vasto
As a student at Harvard University, a young Theodore Roosevelt championed “the vigorous life,” and the burgeoning sport of American football was something he clearly supported. When he became president, the game often figured in his landmark speeches.
“In life, as in a football game, the principle to follow is: hit the line hard; don’t foul and don’t shirk, but hit the line hard!”
His mood changed a few years later, however, when his young son Theodore Roosevelt Jr. enrolled at Harvard and joined the football team. The annual Harvard-Yale game had become the nation’s top sporting event by this time, and football had become far more violent than the “masculine game” Roosevelt
knew from his time in college. This was the era of the “flying wedge.”
A Harvard alumnus and war historian noted that the game’s strategy closely mirrored military maneuvers. Even though he never played a down of football, he designed the flying wedge -- a play that mimicked the tactics of Napoleon’s army by concentrating a large number of men and pointing them like an arrow at the weakest part of the opponent’s line.
Harvard unveiled the play in 1892 against Yale, and people literally stood in awe when they saw the team take the formation. Shaped like a “V” with the ball carrier nestled inside, fans watched as most of the Harvard players linked arms and moved forward, completely obliterating the hapless Yale defender who stood in their way.
The play helped spark interest in the game. Parke Davis, an early sports writer, commented that the play energized fans. “Sensation runs through the stands at the novel play, which is the most organized and beautiful one ever seen upon a football field.”
Pundits estimated that a flying wedge weighed more than a quarter-ton. Every resulting pileup from a play lent itself to anticipation: Was somebody crushed?
The answer, sadly, was often yes. In 1905 alone, the “flying wedge” play resulted in 22 deaths and an estimated 149 “serious” injuries. Newspapers printed body counts and took out full-page editorials calling for reform. Ever the hands-on president, Roosevelt called on the leading institutions to visit the White House. There, he used his “bully pulpit” to spur the creation of what is today called the National Collegiate Association of Athletics (NCAA) -- a body that began in the name of safety for college athletes.
The flying wedge was outlawed as a result, but the play does exist today in a reduced form. Returning teams are allowed to form a “wedge” for the kick returner, and defenders who take on the formation are called “wedge busters.” Look for it next time you watch a game, and marvel as nobody dies.
