One: This is the moment when the infinite enters our time and space. God does the most intimate thing. All: Jesus is coming, Merry Christmas! One: God embraces humanity from the inside, as one of us. All: Jesus is coming, Merry Christmas! One: Even now, God is coming into our lives in a new way. Watch and listen, for Jesus is drawing near.

THE STORY BEGINS

O Little Town of Bethlehem O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep, the silent stars go by: Yet in the dark streets shineth the everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

MARY AND JOSEPH TRAVEL TO BETHLEHEM AND BABY JESUS IS BORN

Scripture Reading Luke 2:1-7 Away in a manger

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus lay down his sweet head. The stars in the sky looked down where he lay; The little Lord Jesus asleep in the hay. The cattle are lowing, the poor Baby wakes But little Lord Jesus no crying He makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky And stay by my side 'til morning is nigh.

THE SHEPHERDS HEAR THE GOOD NEWS

Children dressed as shepherds and animals are invited to come forward now. What Child Is This?

What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this, the angels sing, is Christ, God’s holy offering; Haste, haste your praise to bring the babe, the child of Mary!

THE ANGELS GLORIFY GOD

Scripture Reading Luke 2:8-17 Children dressed as angels come forward now.

Angels We Have Heard on High

Angels we have on heard high, sweetly singing o’er the plains. And the mountains in reply, echoing their joyous strains. Gloria in excelsis Deo Gloria in excelsis Deo.

KINGS BRING GIFTS TO JESUS Children dressed as stars and royalty come forward now.

We Three Kings

We three kings of Orient are Bearing gifts we traverse afar. Field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star.

O star of wonder, star of night, Star of royal beauty bright, Westward leading, still proceeding, following yonder star.

GOD LOVES EVERYONE

Any child who would like to come forward is now welcome.

O Come All Ye Faithful O come all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem; Come and behold him, born the King of angels; O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

SHARE THE GOOD NEWS

During the following song, children return to the pews.

Go Tell It On the Mountain Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere Go, tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born. While shepherds kept their watching o’er silent flocks by night Behold throughout the heavens there shone a holy light.

Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere Go, tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born.

OFFERTORY O Come, O Come Emmanuel 15TH century French chant Kris Hansen, soloist arr. Bradley Sowash Gospel Trio

THE CHRISTMAS EVE PRAYER

LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE

Scripture Reading John 1:1-5, 14-18

* Joy to the World Joy to the world! The Lord is come. Let earth receive her King! Let every heart prepare Him room And heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing And heaven, and heaven and nature sing. He rules the world with truth and grace And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness And wonders of his love, and wonders of his love And wonders and wonders of his love.

ANNOUNCEMENTS WE WELCOME YOU TO WORSHIP. If you are our guest and want more information about St. Pauls, please fill out the fellowship card in the pew rack and drop it in the offering plate. We invite you to join us on a Sunday morning for worship at 9:30 AM or 11:00 AM starting January 8. THIS YEAR The entirety of our CHRISTMAS EVE OFFERING will help UCAN hire a Chaplain. UCAN was founded by Saint Pauls as an orphanage during the Civil War and has since grown into the largest provider of social services to children in Chicago. UCAN is at the forefront of the effort to curb the violence that kills and stings so many Chicago youth each year. Our hearts break at the violence in our city. UCAN believes that youth who have suffered trauma can become our future leaders. Their work heals and saves lives. It will be more powerful with a chaplain ministering to UCAN children and staff. POLAR PEACE MARCH® TO BENEFIT UCAN on Sunday, January 15, 2017. This family friendly event will start at 4:00 PM with a program in the Sanctuary honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy of peace followed by the 1.5 mile March. The evening concludes with a cup of soup in the Gym. Invite friends, family, neighbors and co-workers to be a part of your team for this fun and inspirational event. Funds raised will benefit UCAN and its violence prevention initiative in Chicago. We can make a difference!

ABOUT ST. PAULS

Making a joyful sound in the city

Saint Pauls UCC has a vibrant history in the city of Chicago. Founded in 1843, we are one of the city's oldest churches. In 1989 we became one of America's first congregations to declare ourselves "Open to and Affirming of” LGBT women and men.

From founding Chicago's largest provider of social services to at-risk children to starting a home for the elderly, from housing protestors at the 1968 Democratic Convention to hosting Lincoln Park's first MLK day march against violence on Chicago's streets we are proud to make a joyful sound in the city.

Most importantly, over the past 172 years we are glad to have introduced thousands of children and adults to the amazing, inclusive, life changing, uplifting love of God. We do so in worship that is traditional, but far from conventional.
