TRANSCRIPT
Volume XIX Issue12 Monthly Buckley, Illinois December 2013
“And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for
behold, I bring you good news of great joy that
will be for all the people.’” Luke 2:10
In a very short time, we will be celebrating the
birth of our savior Jesus Christ. How do you react
to the good news of the Savior? How do you react
to the good news that God has sent His only
begotten Son to come into this world and take your
place under the Law? How do you react to the
message that Jesus has come so that He might lay
down His life for your sins on the cross and
overcome death for you through His resurrection?
How do you react to Christmas?
The truth is that there were many different
reactions to Christmas when Jesus was born. There
continues to be many different reactions to
Christmas today as well. During our Advent
midweek services, we want to consider the different
reactions to Christmas.
On Wednesday, December 4, we want to
consider the reaction of King Herod. His
reaction to Christmas was one of fear. We
see that Herod was troubled with fear.
On Wednesday, December 11, we will see
how John leaped for joy.
On Wednesday, December 18, we will see
how the shepherds were eager for news.
Their reaction would be one of faith.
All of these reactions to Christmas are reactions
that we still see today. We want to look at how
others reacted to Christmas and we want to
consider our own reaction to Christmas. Do you
react to Christmas with fear? Do you react to
Christmas with joy? Well, we certainly want to
react with joy, but do we look in the right place for
that joy? Do we react to Christmas with faith as the
shepherds did?
I hope that you will make a point of coming to
the special Advent midweek services in order to be
deepened in your faith in Jesus so that you might
have the right reaction to Christmas. There are so
many things that demand our time and attention at
this time of the year. Our Advent midweek
services are an opportunity for us to allow the
Holy Spirit to come to us and focus our attention
in the right place. They are an opportunity for
God to come to us and deepen us in our faith in
Jesus so that we have the right reaction to
Christmas.
In His service, Pastor Olson

Veteran’s Day
On November 11, the students of St. John’s
hosted an assembly to honor our local
veterans. The afternoon began with the playing of
our national anthem. The seventh and eighth
graders then shared some poetry and played
America on the choir chimes. During the
assembly, veterans and other guests enjoyed the
performance of the entire student body as they
sang the Song of the Unsung Hero. This
performance was videoed and can be seen on the
St. John’s Facebook page. Following the choir’s
performance, the third and fourth graders
described what it means to be a veteran and
finished by holding up letters that spelled out
“Thank You Veterans” along with flags they made
representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines
and Coast Guard. At that time, veterans who were
present at the assembly were asked to stand and be
recognized as the anthem of each military branch
was played. The program was closed with a
prayer. Following the assembly, many
expressions of appreciation were shared with the
staff and students, complimenting the students on
their efforts to honor the veterans.
Chrismons
Volunteer, Diana Lohrbach, came to St. John’s
to help the students make this years’ chrismons.
This is a St. John’s tradition and one that Diana
has been doing for over seven years. For those of
you new to this tradition, a chrismon is a Christian
symbol representing Jesus Christ. Every year the
students at St. John’s make chrismons with the
help of Diana. These are then used to decorate the
school hallway Christmas tree. This tree is a
constant reminder to all who enter the building
that Christmas is about the birth of our Lord Jesus
Christ. Thanks, Diana, for volunteering your time
to help our students remember the importance of
Christmas!

St. John’s Lutheran School exists to teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to assist families
in following our Lord’s commands by providing sound Christian training for children.
Philosophy We, at St. John’s Lutheran School in Buckley, Illinois, believe that each child is a child of GOD; created by the Father, redeemed by the Son, and sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, empowered by the congregation and supported by the children’s parents, we teach using developmentally appropriate methods and practices. Our goal is to fulfill each child’s potential by teaching excellence in character, education, and leadership throughout the integrated curriculum using sound Lutheran doctrinal principles based upon scriptural truth.

Classroom News
Pre-K
There are so many things to be thankful for
this November! I am especially thankful for my
3’s and 4’s classes. We’ve been learning about
fall and working on some fun crafts to get ready
for our Thanksgiving Party. We’ve been talking
about the importance of giving and being thankful
for the things we have.
Along with our letter people we’ve also been
working on patterns, counting, number
recognition, shapes, colors, and our weekly bible
stories. Our Christmas program is right around
the corner; therefore we’ve started practicing our
songs. I love Christmas time and look forward to
celebrating the birth of Jesus the whole month of
December with the kids!
Kindergarten
Our school year is just flying by. It’s hard to
believe that November is already here.
Thankfulness to God has been at the center of
many of our discussions, especially during our
religion lessons of Moses and the Ten
Commandments and of the Israelites crossing the
Jordan River into the Promised Land. Lately, in
our social studies lessons, the children have been
learning about the Native American Indians and
the Pilgrims and have even celebrated and
thanked God with their own homemade
instruments. The kids have helped cook Indian
bread and cornbread, have dyed shirts with
vegetables and fruits, and have made Kuna
Indian animal molas for art, too. In math the
kindergartners have just finished the unit on
numbers up to ten and have started the unit on
graphs. In language arts, the kindergartners
have been learning about such things as plot,
adjectives, and opposites and just finished writing
their own story about a make-believe talking and
singing sunflower. We thank God for his many
blessings, including the opportunity to experience
and learn about so many new things.
Grade 1
November was another exciting month in
first grade! We hope you all had a blessed
Thanksgiving! In religion we learned about
Hannah, Samuel, David, Solomon, Jehoshaphat,
& Esther. Through all these stories we were
reminded of God’s great love for us, His
incredible might and power, and also how God
works through us to do great things. In reading
we have been trying to identify the plot, setting,
and characters within a story. Our favorite
fiction story this month was “King Midas and His
Gold.” The “moral” of the story fit in perfectly
with Thanksgiving. . . that we should not be
greedy but be thankful for what we have! Our
favorite non-fiction reading story was “Land of
Ice.” We were able to read about animals that
live in Antarctica including penguins, octopus,
starfish, and much more! In math we worked
with graphs and various addition strategies. In
English we learned all about nouns and
pronouns. In science we’re in the midst of an
earth science unit. We’ve studied rocks, soil, air,
water, and land. We began learning about
weather and will start learning about our
amazing solar system in December! In social
studies we learned about Veteran’s Day. We are
so thankful for the men and women who have and
are risking their lives for our freedom! We also
have been working on our geography skills in
social studies using maps and globes. On
November 27 we enjoyed our Thanksgiving feast
with the 2nd grade class. The 1st graders were the
Pilgrims while the 2nd graders were the
Wampanoag tribe. Students enjoyed being able
to help cook our meal, and we were once again
reminded of how much we have to be thankful
for! Instead of having a party and receiving treat
bags, students brought in non-perishable food
items to be donated to our local food bank. We
also made Thanksgiving snack mix to give to
people we are thankful for. As written in Psalm
126:3, “The Lord has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy.” We look forward to
December and the upcoming Christmas
season! Have a blessed Advent and joyous
Christmas!
Grades 3 & 4
The third and fourth graders are studying each
person of the Trinity in Religion class. With
Advent just around the corner, it is fitting that we
would be centered on Jesus. As we study His
divine and human natures, we realize that both
were important for our salvation. We also see the
great love He had for us to humble Himself and
follow through with the plan of salvation.
The third graders are plugging away
memorizing their multiplication facts, while the
fourth graders are realizing how helpful it is to
have them memorized as they are tackling larger
multiplication problems. The third grade class
has been studying about the Jamestown settlement
and how blessed they were to have the Native
Americans help them adjust to the new land. The
fourth graders have covered both the Southwest
and Southeast regions of our country. They have
learned that the longer growing season in the
south allows them to grow crops that we do not
see here in the Midwest.
We enjoyed helping out with the Veterans’ Day
Assembly at our school. What a great sacrifice
each of our veterans has given for our country!
Grades 5 & 6
Over the last month the fifth and sixth grade
has changed courses a little bit in their reading
class. The 5th grade started an all-time favorite
“Hatchet” and have really enjoyed it. The 6th
grade students have been reading, and continue to
read “Bud Not Buddy,” which is based around an
orphan child during the Great Depression. Once
the students finish these units, we will return back
to our normal texts.
In History, the students have finished studying
about the European explorers and have moved onto Spanish trade. So far, they have learned
about Columbus, the Aztec, and new Spain.
Science has been focusing on research for the
Science Fair. Most of the 5th and 6th grade
students have started their experiments, and are
excited about their results thus far.
I would like to thank all of the substitute teachers who filled in during my medical leave,
your time is greatly appreciative. I would also
like to thank the parents and students for their
understanding and support during my recovery
and the transition back.
Grades 7 & 8
During the month of November, the 7 & 8
graders wrapped up a very successful speech
season. On Saturday, November 2, the 7 & 8
graders traveled to Cissna Park to compete in the
State Speech Contest. The first performance of the day was the chorale reading, and the students
earned a first place rating. Also receiving first
place ratings were monologue performances by
Samantha DeBella and Mikayla Jones; the duet
by Elena Shields and Dawson Weppler; the duet
by Alexis Wisniewski and Jaeden Washington;
the small group performance by Rachael Daugherty, Ashley Thomas, and Samantha
Hector; and the small group performance by
Bree Davis, Katelyn Crabb, and Kylie
Sleigh. The small group performance by Ryan
Perkinson, Caden Shields, and DJ Spitz earned a
second place rating. Following the state contest, the students performed their speeches during PTL
speech night on November 6 and also for the
members of Ladies Aid on November 7. The
following week, the students were surprised to
find out that three of our groups earned the
Judges Choice Award from the state contest. The Judges Choice Award is an additional award that
is given by each judge to their favorite
performance of the day. The students receiving
this honor were Samantha DeBella for her
monologue “Grounded,” Elena Shields and
Dawson Weppler for their duet “Bun-gee!” and Katelyn Crabb, Bree Davis, and Kylie Sleigh for
their small group performance of “Friends
Forever.” Congratulations to all of the students
for a job well done.
