Seiketsu - Standardize, (Siguruduhin)

Shitsuke - Self- Discipline, (Sariling Kusa)

WHAT IS 5S?

It is a basic approach for QUALITY AND PRODUCTIVITY improvement in all types of

workplace. It is the beginning of a more comfortable and PRODUCTIVE workplace.

Moreover, It is intended to make discipline and orderliness a habit in the workplace.

1. SEIRI – identify and take out unnecessary items and dispose them accordingly

By sorting:

What do I need to do my job?

Unnecessary items are discarded or dispose

Undecided Items, put “red tag”

HOW???

Step1: Evaluate/ Assess workplace in relation to the use of a workplace

Identitfy unnecessary items and dispose them

Designate storage area

Step2: if you and your colleagues cannot decide, put a DISPOSAL NOTICE with the date on the item, and set the item aside

Step3: “AKAFUDA OPERATION”- tagging Operation. It is one technique of implementing Seiri. The objective is to remove the unnecessary items that are not needed so that the workplace becomes both clearer and smarter

2. SEITON – “Arrange NECESSARY items in good and proper order.

By systematize:

Where should I place this item?

How many of these items do I really need?

HOW???

Step1: Think which things should be put where.

Filing – Documents

Categorization – File folder

Ready access Storage- Storage for current year documents

Transfer previous year docs- Storage for previous year docs

Remote storage – storage for 2yr old document

Step2: Consider how often things are being used.

Decide a proper place where things should be located

One step Rule: store goods First-In-First-Out retrieval

“Only feet on the ground”

Step3: Keep a list of things with their locations

Label each drawer to show what is kept inside

3. SEISO – also an action to clean your workplace thoroughly.

The principle says “EVERYONE CLEANS”

Cleaning is inspecting such as leaks, breakage, and misalignment.

HOW???

3-5mins cleaning daily

Assign owner to each machine

Combine cleaning with inspection

Schedule “ Big Seiso ( CLEAN-UP) day”

“IT IS GOOD DISCIPLINE TO LEAVE A PLACE CLEANER THAN WHEN YOU FOUND IT. THIS IS ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH”

4. SEIKETSU – a condition where high standard of good housekeeping is maintained by continuously practicing the first 3S

By standardizing:

Sustaining 3-4 minute daily clean up habit

Keeping a balance between personal cleanliness and the cleanliness

Of the environment

Avoiding littering

Learning to pick up tiny pieces of waste around\

HOW???

Visual control signs (cautions and operating reminders; danger alerts, equipment desgination, preventive maintenance displays, instructions)

Color coding

Responsibility labels

Maintenance labels

Prevention of dust, dirt, noise and vibration

5. SHITSUKE – It is about mental and physical disciplines required to maintain the other 4S. The discipline is achieved through the use of routines including self-assessments, audits and checklists of results visually displayed and regularly reviewed. It is necessary to keep educating and training people on maintaining standards

“DO THINGS SPONTANEOUSLY WITHOUT BEING TOLD/ORDERED”

By virtue of self- discipline:

Instilling the ability of doing things the way it is supposed to be done

Becoming a role model by treating your workplace as your second home

Influencing others to join in keeping the well-maintained work area

Aiming for constant improvement

Keep workplace always clean and tidy (CLAYGO)

“Clean as you go”

Wear proper decorum

Follow safety rules

Put things back in their proper place after use

Work according to standards

WHY 5S??

o Workplace becomes clean and better organized

o Results are visible to everyone

o Visible results trigger generation of more new ideas

o People are automatically disciplined

o People become proud of well-organized workplace
