1. SUMM:.RY

Throughout the entire month the lst Battalion, 5th Marines was in I Corps Reserve at Camp C!.SEY ( CS 307984). It!! mission u an element of I Corps Reserve was to move on order to any designated assembly area, be prepared to counter-attack on order and seize objectives in it's zone of action; and be prepared on order to organize, occupy, and defend the MLR in it 1 s zone of action, ;, secondary miseion of rear area defense against hostile ground and airborne operations was assigned, and during the period 23 May to 28 May this battalion maintained one rifle company on a one hour alert.

Having arrived at camp C/.SEY on 1 May 1953 the battalion spent the period 1 - 6 May 1953 relocating, repairing, and improving the. existing facilities; and installing now facilities where necessary, During this period amphibious training was conducted and all staff sections were busy preparing plans for 5th Marines RCT LEX I.

During the period 7 - 9 Hay 1953, the battalion headquarters and all company headquarters participated in a regimental reduced distance CPX, a battalion field exeroise, and regimental normal distance CPX.

On taw morning of D plus 1 the battalion moved in column to the designated line of departure, and deployed for the attack on objective 11 D11 • Prior to lea\"ing \;he line of departure, LEX I was secured and b'J,ck loading of personnel and equir~ent commenced immediately, due to predicted adverse weather cor,dit ions. Back loading of personnel and equipment l't~S corr.ploted on 15 Hny ~--953 and the U ~ Sj S. !.ENA:··lEE returned to INCHON harbor. Disembarking commenced early on 17 May 1953, and all personnel and equipment returned to Camp CASEY prior to nightfall,

During the period 18 - 31 May 1953 all elements of the battl'lion were engaged in sme~ unit training end instruction in basic subjects. On 26 - 27 May 1953 the batt.alion headquarters participated in a Division CPX.

The battelion was placed on a six hou7 alert on 28 May 1953 and continued ~n that status during the remainder of the month.

On 30 May 1953 the battalion participated in a Memorial Day Ceremony on tho regimental parade field.

Throughout the month the battalion Chaplain held religious services each ~~day, ~~d Vesper services each evening: Movies were shown in the

•attalion movie area each night.

Elements of the battalion continued camp improvement, held inspections, and conducted training in basic subjects.

20 MAY

Training in basic subjects continued, The Marine Memorial Fund Drive ended with this battalion ftaving eontributed a total of $41012.

Training in basic subjects continued with the majority being conducted indoors due to inclement weather, The division command post exercise was postponed due to incltllllent weather, "C" Company was design~.ted as the alert company on a one hour alert, with the mission of perforruing rear area security duties,

23 MAY

Unit commanders held p~rsonnel and area inspections during the morning, Holiday routine prevailed during the afternoon and most personnel wore occupied with intra-battalion baseball, sof"tbllll, and volleyball games, "C" Company was the alert comr'l.ny,

24 MAY

Holiday routine prevailed throughout the day, Many of the men attended various church services during tho toorning, and engaged in competitive athletics during the afternoon, The battalion baseb~~l team lost itis first game of the season to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines team, 11 C" Company was the ale1~ company.

TERRAIN STUDY

1. GE~Itt..L DESOF.IPTION

The YongJon-Ni beach is located on the West coast of Korea, 33,5 :::1les south'lvest of the ci t~r r)f KUNSAN, Lat 350 27,8'N., Long. 1260 27,2' E. The beach is stl•aight nnd approximately 4200 yards in length,

The population is primarily agrarian and all tillable land is under cultivation,

3, TOPOGRAPHY

(a) The CHANGSAN-NI hill mass iS the dominant terrain feature in the landing area, This hill mass offers good observation to the enemy of the beach approaches, the baoks.l:<ore area, and the avenues of egress therefrom, Hill 116 and the branching ridgolino to tho Southwest affords good observation of the right flank of the beach,

(b) Fair concealment is offered the attacking rorce by the scrub growth which lies from the Clune Hne inland for a distance or about 400 yards 1 in the cen tor of the beach, Cover is provided throughout the area by sand dufjes, tho earthenwalled dikes surrounding the cultivated fields, and tho gullies on the high ground.

(c) Tho rocky peninsula approximatel~ 125 1 in elevation Which sene.ra tea the extreme ril2:h t flank of the landing beach from the· primary landlng area is cons l.!i.!;lred n critical terrain f:Jnturn, Posi tiona on this peninsula have excellent fields or fire and observation over sea approaches and the le.nding bce.ch area.
