Forty years ago, the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, admitted three women members, in violation of the Rotary International Constitution. As a result, the club’s charter was terminated by RI. Undeterred, the club’s members continued to meet. They put an X over their Rotary insignia, made themselves new pins, and dubbed themselves the Ex-Rotary Club of Duarte as they continued to fight for the right of women to serve as Rotarians. Ten years later, a restored Rotary Club of Du-arte sent Sylvia Whitlock, Rotary’s first female club presi-dent, to a presidents-elect training seminar. Not long after that, in 1989, Rotary’s Council on Legislation permanently ended Rotary’s status as a men-only organization.

Today, with more than 240,000 women in our clubs, Ro-tary is stronger than ever. We are women and men from

nearly every country of the world, serving our communities in more than 35,000 clubs. At the club level, we need men and women of all backgrounds, ages, cultures, and professions; internationally, we need clubs in every city, country, and region of the world. The better our clubs reflect their com-munities, the better we can serve them. Our diversity is our strength.

It is difficult for most of us to imagine today why anyone argued so strongly against the idea of women in Rotary. Looking back, I think that opposition came from a simple resistance to change. Rotarians loved Rotary the way it was and couldn’t imagine it any other way.

We still love Rotary as much as we ever did. We love the friendships and connections we make there, and the ability Rotary provides us to serve humanity. We believe Rotary has tremendous value in our own lives and in the world at large. And we recognize, more than ever, that for Rotary to continue to grow, it needs to embrace the world it serves – in all of its diversity, all of its variety, and all of its evolving needs for service.

The Rotarians of today owe a debt of gratitude to the Rotarians of Duarte 40 years ago. Their determi-nation, persistence, and enduring goodwill set the stage for the organization we have become: Rotary Serving Humanity.

Goals of Rotary Friendship exchange • Advance international understanding and peace through personal contact across bor-

ders.• Meet Rotarians from other countries and learn about their culture firsthand.• Arrange international service projects directly with Rotarians in another country• Develop long-lasting club relationships

How a Rotary Friendship programme is built • Interested Rotarians must apply through their club president, who will inform them

if their district participates in the program.• District chairs work with their counterparts around the world to organize all aspects

of exchanges.• RI produces a list of district Friendship Exchange chairs on a quarterly basis to help

with communication.

Types of exchanges 1. Visitor Program - Individual Rotarians, who may be accompanied by family members,

spend a few days in the home of a Rotarian in another country. 2. Team Program - Rotarian couples, typically four to six, visit several communities in a

host district for up to one month. 3. Uni-vocational - Host and guest Rotarians of the same occupation observe how their

job is done in other countries. Exchange Guidelines

• It is expected that all exchanges be reciprocal.• Friendship Exchanges may take place at any time during the year that is agreeable to

the clubs and districts involved.• Reciprocal visits may take place during the same year or in the following year.• The length of stay for participants in the visitor program is several (three or four)

days, while those in the team program visit several communities in the host district for period of up to four weeks.

• In all cases, guests are expected to pay their travel and personal expenses. Hosts are to provide housing, meals, and sightseeing opportunities. Variations from this standard are only at the host family’s discretion and should not be requested or expected.

as a rotarian, I will:1. act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and

professional life.2. deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations

with respect.3. Use my professional skills through rotary to mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people’s quality of life in my community and in the world.4. Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other rotarians.5. Not seek special business or professional advantages from other

rotarians.

Avenues of serviceWe channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity.

• Club Service focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong relationships and an active membership development plan.

• Vocational Service calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and con-tribute their expertise to the problems and needs of society. Learn more in An Introduction to Vocational Service and the Code of Conduct.

• Community Service encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest. Learn more in Communities in Action: A Guide to Effective Projects and this Community Service presentation (PPT).

• International Service exemplifies our global reach in promoting peace and un-derstanding. We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on international projects, seeking partners abroad, and more.

• Youth Service recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs such as Rotaract, In-teract, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange.

ROTARY GUIDING PRINCIPLES

These principles have been developed over the years to provide Rotarians with a strong, common purpose and direction. They serve as a foundation for our rela-tionships with each other and the action we take in the world.

We’ve done the legwork for you and here they are: the 45 best health tips. Make that 46 - taking the time to read this

tops the list.

1. Copy your kitty: Learn to do stretching exercises when you wake up. It boosts circulation and digestion, and eases

back pain.

2. don’t skip breakfast. Studies show that eating a proper breakfast is one of the most positive things you can do if

you are trying to lose weight. Breakfast skippers tend to gain weight. A balanced breakfast includes fresh fruit or fruit

juice, a high-fibre breakfast cereal, low-fat milk or yoghurt, wholewheat toast, and a boiled egg.

3. Brush up on hygiene. Many people don’t know how to brush their teeth properly. Improper brushing can cause as much damage to the teeth and gums as not brushing at all.

http://www.health24.com/Medical/Flu/Health-tips/45-best-health-tips-ever-20120721

Lots of people don’t brush for long enough, don’t floss and don’t see a dentist regularly. Hold your tooth-brush in the same way that would hold a pencil, and brush for at least two minutes.

This includes brushing the teeth, the junction of the teeth and gums, the tongue and the roof of the mouth. And you don’t need a fancy, angled toothbrush – just a sturdy, soft-bristled one that you replace each month.

4. Neurobics for your mind. Get your brain fizzing with energy. American researchers coined the term ‘neurobics’ for tasks which activate the brain’s own biochemical pathways and to bring new pathways online

that can help to strengthen or preserve brain circuits.

Brush your teeth with your ‘other’ hand, take a new route to work or choose your clothes based on sense of touch rather than sight. People with mental agility tend to have lower rates of Alzheimer’s disease and age-

related mental decline.

5. Get what you give! always giving and never taking? This is the short road to compassion fatigue. Give to yourself and receive from others, otherwise you’ll get to a point where you have nothing left to give. And

hey, if you can’t receive from others, how can you expect them to receive from you?
