5SAP Solution in Detail – Application Lifecycle Management Eases Innovation, Boosts Quality, Reduces Risk

At SAP, application lifecycle management is a term that describes the processes, tools, services, and organizational model used to manage SAP® and non-SAP software throughout the lifecycle of your solutions, from concept to phaseout. Application lifecycle management is a foundation that supports your quest to run IT like a factory and enables you to adopt innovations from SAP rapidly.

Within the framework of ALM, SAP supports 11 application lifecycle manage-ment processes that help you manage your SAP and non-SAP applications from implementation through to the retirement of the solutions. These ALM processes run within the context of the five-phase Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) framework. ITIL provides generic guidelines for IT management standards that represent good practices. Customers who do not run ITIL shops can still benefit from following these ALM pro-cesses within the context of the ASAP methodology or their own methodology.

The processes behind application life-cycle management are straightforward. They provide a set of integrated tools and processes designed to help IT realize the benefits of the company’s invest-ment in new technology and processes with minimum risk. The same tools are used to gather intelligence about how the processes are running from both the IT and the business point of view. This enables IT to manage those processes in such a way as to achieve key perfor-

mance indicators (KPIs), reach a high return on the investment, increase the quality of implemented solutions and processes, and reduce risk.

Our application lifecycle management approach assists IT managers in devel-oping best practices for managing each IT process no matter how complicated the application landscape might be. The 11 processes supported by SAP software are aligned with the solution standards developed by the SAP Active Global Sup-port (SAP AGS) organization. IT manag-ers can implement these standards quickly using the SAP Solution Manager application management solution pro-vided as part of their SAP Enterprise Support agreement.

Business managers benefit from tools designed to help them validate and con-firm business requirements and develop a proof of vision prior to any coding, pro-gramming, or configuration. Process models can be built and used throughout the lifecycle of the process to help design and efficiently implement the process, while providing feedback on process per-formance after the software has gone into productive operation. The process models are used throughout testing to verify that the built solution meets the relevant requirements. After going live with the solution, the process models are used to monitor and track business per-formance and can be used as a basis to develop changes to the software to meet evolving business demands.

At SAP, application lifecycle manage-ment focuses on the following areas: • Processes based upon standards for

best practices drawn up by SAP AGS • Tools from SAP and third-party ven-

dors designed to support the ALM processes

• Support and consulting services that provide access to expert knowledge and educational services to empower your workforce

• A best-practice methodology, organi-zational model, and solution stan-dards that assist you in managing the organizational aspects of your soft-ware landscape

IT and business managers are tasked with maintaining business continuity, accelerating innovation, and reducing risk while keeping the total cost of opera-tions low and protecting the company’s IT investment. Meeting these objectives on a continual basis is exactly what the ALM approach is designed to facilitate. To gain optimal value from your business solutions, SAP provides software and technology to help you with application lifecycle management, including all the tools you require to perform the tasks efficiently and effectively.

Application Lifecycle Management – The ProcessesCustomers gain optimal value from their business solutions by implementing SAP’s recommended approach to application lifecycle management (ALM). You can manage minor changes, such as patches, and develop new implementations and adap-tations of existing solutions to support company carve-outs or business mergers faster, with increased quality, and reduced risk. Our ASAP methodology supports IT and the business throughout the application lifecycle.

Page 6: Application Lifecycle Management Eases Innovation, Boosts

ITIL Phases ITIL is widely adopted for IT service man-agement because it so clearly defines a framework for identifying, planning, delivering, and supporting IT services delivered to the business. Regardless of the methodology you use to manage your application landscape – the ASAP methodology or your own methodology – this framework has distinct phases within which the 11 ALM processes sup-ported by the ASAP methodology can be performed.

Application Lifecycle Management ProcessesALM processes are activities that IT management can deliver as IT services to support your software in specific stages of the application lifecycle. The 11 ALM processes supported by SAP observe best-practices standards to keep your SAP software running like a smoothly operating factory. SAP AGS publishes solution standards for each of the 11 processes. SAP Solution Manager is the primary tool used to support these processes. The application management solution also serves as the hub for inte-grating additional software to help you address your ALM activities.

APPLICATIOn LIFECyCLE MAnAgEMEnT In DETAIL

Managers must manage their solutions during the various ALM processes while operating within several phases of ITIL concurrently. New solutions are imple-mented as productive operations con-tinue to be supported. Current processes are optimized and changes to productive processes are implemented at the same time as service-level agreements to the business and KPIs are being met. During this time, regression tests of changes are executed to verify that high-quality inno-vations and changes are delivered. Mean-while, monitoring the current operation of solutions and troubleshooting prob-lems is taking place and active business operations are being managed. To help customers coordinate and orchestrate these activities, SAP provides integrated software and tools designed to reuse information and streamline the work associated with ALM.

The 11 ALM processes supported by SAP observe best-practices standards to keep your SAP software running like a smoothly operating factory. SAP AGS publishes solution standards for each of the 11 processes.

• Manage and report on KPIs • Optimize business processes on an

ongoing basis over the lifecycle of your applications

Because this software integrates with SAP Solution Manager, it can share infor-mation across tools and support collabo-ration between IT and the business. With these solutions, you can support all the applications in your complex software landscape, including both SAP and non-SAP applications, throughout their lifecycles.

The figure shows the products that make up the set of this software and the ALM processes they support. Keep in mind, though, that most products support multiple ALM processes, increasing the return on investment for each product.

and transparency. Collaboration between distributed IT business and partner teams is facilitated. SAP software brings together the processes, tools, services, and point solutions based on SAP Solu-tion Manager. The framework includes best-of-breed software that comprises SAP and third-party vendor solutions, all provided by SAP. Following the integrated ALM approach and with the tools this software provides, you will be able to:

• Deliver innovation and manage change more quickly to meet business requirements

• Reduce total cost of ownership • Deliver superior-quality applications

that maintain business continuity and reduce risk

• Meet, or exceed, service-level agree-ments with the business

How to Tackle ALM Challenges There are obvious benefits in establishing an integrated platform of processes and tools designed to support ALM activities and employing a central repository for information and reuse of information. Our customers often struggle with point solu-tions that require manual integration in order to share information or to trace requirements. Because they are not integrated, the solutions do not provide consistent information throughout the application lifecycle. They hinder collabo-ration between phases and between busi-ness and IT, and create process gaps and disruptions.

When the processes and tools used by a team are integrated, you gain continuity and consistency from one process to the next. You benefit from improved visibility

9SAP Solution in Detail – Application Lifecycle Management Eases Innovation, Boosts Quality, Reduces Risk

All of the tools and applications dis-cussed in this document integrate with SAP Solution Manager and support the ALM processes. These tools and applica-tions – some from SAP, others from the SAP ecosystem and partners – help you manage each of the application lifecycle processes. The figure lists each offering with the process during which the offer-ing is usually introduced. However, most of these products extend across ALM processes, increasing the return on investment for each product.

Because ALM helps you manage change throughout the application life-cycle, you can oversee spot changes, like patches, as well as overarching changes, such as the implementation of new solu-tions. You have support for performing needed adaptations to software as a result of company carve-outs, business mergers, and acquisitions.

Managing application quality and mini-mizing risk over the course of the appli-cation lifecycle starts with SAP Solution Manager. Provided to customers free of charge as part of their SAP product maintenance program, SAP Solution Manager supports the ALM processes and integrates with SAP software designed to help you address your ALM challenges. As a centralized hub for application management processes, SAP Solution Manager facilitates collabora-tion. You gain a single source of the truth throughout the lifecycle of your applica-tions. Support for Application Lifecycle Management from SAP

CIOs are tasked with maintaining business continuity, accelerating innovation, and reducing risk while keeping the total cost of operations low and protecting the company’s IT investment. Meeting these objectives is what the ALM approach facilitates.

Page 10: Application Lifecycle Management Eases Innovation, Boosts

During the ALM process called solution implementation, you identify, adapt, enhance, and implement support for business and technical business scenar-ios. This process teases out business innovation from software installation. Based on SAP Solution Manager, you can use the products of the ALM software described below to adapt and implement solutions within your solution landscape.

SAP APPLICATIOn VISUALIzATIOn SOFTWARE By IRISE

With SAP Application Visualization software by iRise, you verify business requirements and improve collaboration between IT and the business. The diffi-culty of capturing clear, accurate require-ments for software development projects is generally acknowledged. SAP Applica-tion Visualization eases the task, helping business and IT communicate better, share their vision, verify their under-standing of business requirements, and reduce the risk of costly project overruns during development.

With SAP Application Visualization, you can rapidly create an integrated, interac-tive view of an entire solution design or any part of it you require. This visualiza-tion allows you to show stakeholders how standard and nonstandard elements of SAP and partner software would look and interact within either a new or exist-ing software landscape. Stakeholders can test-drive and fully experience the proposed vision for the application design and provide feedback before any expensive coding takes place. A working preview can be completed in a matter of hours to encompass integrated work-flows, interfaces to existing solutions,

and custom requirements. The end result is a complete, readily understandable “picture” of requirements. Business and IT can agree on what’s needed and how to implement software to meet those needs. In most cases, business analysts and functional experts can learn and master the software functionality in less than a day.

SAP CEnTRAL PROCESS SCHEDULIng APPLICATIOn By REDWOOD

From solution design to operation and continuous improvement, enterprise process automation helps you manage business and IT processes. Based on the SAP Central Process Scheduling applica-tion by Redwood, this automation con-nects people, applications, and systems to make your processes more efficient, reliable, and cost-effective. It gives busi-ness stakeholders more visibility and control of process execution; improves process quality, continuity, and consis-tency; and reduces process costs.

Business users require more visibility and control over when and under what conditions their processes execute. Enterprise process automation enables business stakeholders to actively partici-pate in the execution of their processes, providing role-based interfaces for interactions such as approvals, decision checkpoints, and responses to alerts. This gives business users the right level of IT transparency and helps close the gap between business and IT responsibilities. In addition to empowering business users, these interfaces reduce the burden on IT to respond to minor process issues, alleviating help-desk workload and freeing resources for value-adding activities.

Designing how business process steps will execute as part of the solution design gives process architects more control over implementation and execution. With the software, they can:

• Include end-to-end process execution design with no need to use the ABAP™ programming language

• Include business process steps in the integration test cycle to improve over-all quality and reduce risk

• Plan business-user interaction to drive efficiency and help ensure stakeholder visibility throughout the process

ALM Process: Business Process Operations

Page 14: Application Lifecycle Management Eases Innovation, Boosts

The amount of work required to build, test, and deploy an application may be substantial, but it marks only the begin-ning of the application lifecycle. It is dur-ing the ALM process called technical operations that an application will prove its value to the company – and IT needs to do everything within its power to deliver value wherever possible. During this ALM process, you monitor, analyze, and maintain SAP and non-SAP solutions. However, monitoring technology compo-nents in the IT infrastructure can only tell part of the story. To achieve full monitor-ing coverage of applications, you need to track performance from the perspective of the end user.

SAP ARCHIVIng APPLICATIOn By OPEnTExT

The SAP Archiving application by OpenText allows enterprises to manage increasing amounts of information – including structured and unstructured data – with a minimum amount of effort and resources.

The volume of business data in your database – which increases with every transaction – hinders technology perfor-mance, slows access to information, and decreases the speed and agility of your business. SAP Archiving lets you off-load outdated SAP data and documents from SAP software while retaining access to that information. SAP Archiving is avail-able as part of the SAP Document Access application by OpenText and as a sepa-rate application for organizations without document access requirements or with non-SAP content access requirements.

With SAP Archiving you can store SAP and non-SAP data and documents on a secure archive server with logical and physical archive management function-ality. During its lifecycle, the data is stored in a durable, unalterable, and tam-

perproof format, lowering the costs and risks associated with meeting data reten-tion and disposal requirements. In addi-tion, off-loading data speeds up backup and recovery times, reduces administra-tive and hardware costs, and decreases the time it takes to implement enterprise application upgrades. Administrators can archive data when necessary and even schedule data archiving to enhance the application’s performance.
