PLEASE SUPPORT US WITH THIS PETITION

As many of you would be aware, a number of families have been significantly distressed by the closure of the Route 7 Bus Service.

Consequently, the P & F have posted an e‐pe on on the Qld Parliament website.

This service previously provided a “one‐bus” journey for students from Loganholme to Coorparoo passing through Rochedale, Mansfield and along the length of Cavendish Road.  Because of its closure students from Loreto, Seton and Villanova Colleges have been forced to catch up to three buses each way to and from school.  This is not just a ma er of inconvenience and cost but most importantly it is a ma er of student safety.

We  therefore urgently seek the support of all community members  in asking  the Government  to  subsidise  the   service as a “Translink route” so that it can be re‐instated.

You can help even  if your child does not use this service.   We need as many votes as possible.   Anyone who  is a Queensland resident can click on the  link to vote.   Please take a  few seconds to help out members of our wider school community.  If you can send the link to friends or rela ves who may help, that would be much appreciated.  Simply follow the instruc on a er the link opens.

This e‐pe on has been posted to the Parliament’s website.  Link a ached.

The end of the year is fast approaching, however, the pace has not abated in the labs here at Loreto. Year 8s are currently investigating the various modes of reproduction in plants, the Year 9s are learning about sports physiology and the Year 10s are currently working on experiments of their own design. We are seeing some novel apparatus and interesting innovations coming out of these classes and I am sure some great data will arise from these experiments. Our Year 11 Physics class are completing their extended experimental investigation on optics which has been great fun. The girls are enjoying using lenses, prisms, polarisers, refraction tanks, diffraction gratings, filters, mirrors and lasers to investigate the properties of light. In Year 11 Chemistry, we are exploring the chemistry of gases, while our Biology classes are looking at disease and the immune system and will be developing skills in aseptic technique to allow them to safely handle bacterial cultures in the laboratory.

Applications are now open for SPARQ-Ed 2013. This program is operated by the UQ and takes place at the Translational Research Institute at the PA hospital. This facility is newly built and features state of the art laboratories and research spaces. The program offers a great opportunity for students to participate in real, cutting edge projects in the realm of medical research. There are 5-day immersion programs available and attendees are eligible to earn a point under the University of Queensland Bonus Ranks Scheme to assist in tertiary entry. Shorter workshops are also provided in cell and molecular biology activities. Many sessions are conducted during school holidays. Any interested students can visit www.di.uq.edu.au/sparq-ed or check out the science noticeboard or see me at the College. Matthew Lourigan - Science Coordinator

BSGSA Sport Basketball This Week’s Draw - Final Round 8: Open A vs Mt St Michaels's at Clem Jones, Carina (bus) play off for 5th/6th Open B vs Mt Alvernia at Clem Jones, Carina (bus) play off for 5th/6th Intermediate A vs Mt St Michael's at Mt St Michael's, Ashgrove (bus) play off for 3rd/4th Intermediate B vs San Sisto at Loreto (MWC) Grand final play off for 1st/2nd Junior A vs All Hallows’ at All Hallows’ (bus) Grand final play off for 1st/2nd Junior B vs All Hallows’ at Loreto (outside court) play off for 3rd/4th

Round 7 Results Open A were defeated by Lourdes Hill 5 7 - 19 Lourdes Hill were faster and transitioned the ball at greater speed down the court. Loreto maintained intensity and rebounded with determination with Lauren Roberts and Krisitina Sams leading the way. Isabella Mammone landed a three point basket which got Loreto firing. Unfortunately the stronger team won on the day. Open B defeated Mt St Michael’s 60 - 10 As the scoreline indicates this was a very one sided match with Loreto dominating from the onset. All players contributed to a pleasing win and this team continues to improve each week. Well done! Chiara Asnicar led the scoring in the first quarter, while Helen O’Dougherty had a strong all court game. Intermediate A were defeated by All Hallows’ 49 - 24 Loreto really rose to the challenge and displayed determined and improved basketball against the strongest team in this division. There was an obvious improvement from the last encounter and Loreto fought hard to contain their very tall opposition. Ashleigh DaSilva had an outstanding game. A pleasing performance girls. Well done! Intermediate B won 60 - 6 Loreto produced a well structured game, bought about by their guards forcing many easy turn overs. Georgia Garrett played well in transition to put pressure on the attackers while Lucy Nielson contributed 8 points in offense and passed well to team mates in the keyway. A resounding win which will hopefully put the team into good form for next week’s grand final. Junior A defeated Our Lady’s 41 - 32 This was a solid game from Loreto. Vicki Flores-Rodriguez and Jessica Galpin led the way with strong defence while Zoe Sever and Brigitte Mastry took the ball to the basket with determination. The team must ensure they maintain a consistent intensity throughout the entire game, as lapses in next week’s grand final will be very cost-ly. Another good win for the season. Junior B were defeated by St Rita’s 36 - 15 Loreto displayed improved defence this week against a stronger opposition. While they were outclassed in the match they played determinedly to outscore St Rita’s in the final quarter. Riley Bennett and Lucy Briggs were strong in attack, but needed more controlled aggression from their team mates. All players must bring a spare shirt to change into at the completion of this week’s match, as singlets will be collected by coaches at their playing venue. Nyree Wood - Netball Coordinator

Round 7 Results OPEN

A great game though we struggled to shut down the defence and attack the opposition’s weakness. We play in the grandfinal which is a replay of this match, so training is critical and we look forward to a close game.

Ball skills session worked really well to assist in the win. The players all moved the ball around the field to attack logically. A great win !

INTERMEDIATE

A great win for the Loreto! Rucking was penetrative and Jana Bellos was noticeable here. A great way to finish the Round.

A great game by all with rucking definitely improving. Special mention to Kelsy Ahrens for scoring four touchdowns!

JUNIOR

An improved game this week with solid defence and excellent rucking. As the opposition were one player down, we matched them with one less on field as well. Matilda Ingram played outstandingly scoring a number of touchdowns. Grand final – here we come!

The girls were consistent throughout the game , adjusting to the slower pace. A moment of lapse saw the score a tie, but a great win resulted.

The Junior C team went down 3 - 9 to Lourdes Hill B team but continue to show improvement with some well crafted tries this week. Well done! Therese Begley - Touch Football Coordinator Under 15 Waterpolo The Under 15 girls played well on the weekend defeating All Hallows 11 to 2. The hard training has paid off with major improvements in the game plan. The girls started to play as a team and worked hard for each other. Their skills are improving rapidly with each game. Great effort girls. Coach: James Duffy. The program for next round for 10 November is

Please be there 30 minutes prior to the game.

PRESIDENT: Ciane Gallenti-Guilfoyle

VICE-PRESIDENT: Jemima Moore

SECRETARY: Marcie Bakker

TREASURER: Sarah King

Senior Representative: Chantel Morris

Junior Representative: Sam Crawford

The Board members are volunteers who commit to assisting the Executive and participating in activities during 2013. They are: Georgina Coote, Bridget Pekin, Sheridan Tully, Hannah Dalton, Claire Da Rin De-Barbera, Ashley Nicol, Greta Wilcox, Alyssa Bell, Jana Bellos, Kyroe Killin, Laura Kenyon, Teagan Chaston, Meg Ingram, Keeleigh O’Hanlon, Jacqueline West, Georgia John, Nicola Tracey, Vania So, Emily Nguyen.

Outgoing Committee We thank the outgoing Executive for their time and effort in this work for others. They are: Cassandra Day (President), Sophie Atkinson, Jemma Sawyer, Madalyn Picaro, Ciane Gallenti-Guilfoyle and Jemima Moore.

The members celebrated the past year of St Vinnie’s activities at a local restaurant last Thursday evening. The new Executive and the outgoing Execcutive had much to discuss and the evening was very enjoyable for all. Thanks to Ms Bauer for also attending and for her able assistance throughout the year.

The members have the task ahead of them of collecting about 200 presents for the local elderly recipients of Holland Park Meals on Wheels. The members who deliver the meal and the present have found this to be a very satisfying activity, fully in the Christian spirit of Christmas. I receive letters and phone calls from the local community praising our students for their initiative and kindness. This is a much appreciated activity. We ask the Loreto Community to generously support us with unisex presents such as packets of lollies, soft jubes, chocolates, fancy biscuits or even a donation of $3.00 so we can purchase an item. Sizzler Break-up The annual Sizzler break up was celebrated by about 25 girls last Thursday 1st November. As always it was a wonderful celebration of the good work done by the outgoing executive and a welcome to the new executive. About twenty five girls attended the evening and it was very pleasing to see girls from Years Eight and Nine come along as this is where the future of St Vincent de Paul lies in our community. The girls enjoyed the dessert bar and the many variations they could achieve with the variety of toppings available. I was delighted that a member of the public took the time to come over and congratulate the ‘young ladies’ on their behaviour and obvious joy and companionship. It was a lovely way to celebrate the good works carried out this year. Deb Bauer - SVDP

“Children grow up quickly and in what seems like the blink of an eye they have left school. Don’t let that special time pass without actively participating in their lives by playing a role at the school. You can do this in many ways, including nominating as a Parent Year Level Representative. Although the school year may be drawing to a close and thoughts turning to holidays, planning for next year is already underway. We are therefore now calling for nominations for 2013. What does it involve? Parent Year Level Representatives generate community spirit by organising events such as drinks by the pool, dinner and other social events. If you have attended one of these events and enjoyed it, consider the planning that went into it. However these are not onerous tasks and we are happy to refer you to others who have acted as reps to determine if this is something you would like to do. If you are interested in becoming a Year Representative in 2013, please email reply Trish Willing: [email protected] or complete the attached tear-off slip and return it to the office asap.” Garry West - P & F Secretary
