Beginning the week of September 20, New Hope is introducing a 6 week small group ministry with the study of Real Faith for Real Life by Michael Foss. This small book comprised of 6 chapters has been described as a ‘moving workbook for the soul’. Foss encour-ages ‘living discipleship’ through six practices for discovering a faith that works in real, everyday life, including prayer, worship and Bible reading.

Through the visioning process of ERNIE (the congregation’s dis-cernment/vision team) we learned that two top priorities for you in-clude deepening relationships with one another in the congregation and deepening your journey of faith. This new initiative meets both of those goals. We hope that you will seriously consider this oppor-tunity for growth.

So how can you take part in this?

From the Amazon.com review: For Christians seeking to apply their faith to everyday life, Real Faith for Real Life invites readers to answer the call of discipleship and provides guidance and examples of how to do so successfully. Michael Foss, author of Power Surge, encourages readers to rely on six time-tested marks of discipleship that encourage the practice of faith in everyday life: daily prayer, Bible reading, weekly worship, Christian service, relationships that encourage spiritual growth, and giving in the spirit of generosity. Using Bible passages and real-life stories, Foss illustrates how each mark of discipleship enhances and supports the growth of a person’s faith journey. This book also includes study questions and journaling suggestions for small group discussion and individual reflection.

There will be several small groups led by dif-ferent leaders in the congregation. Leaders will select weekly meeting times that suit the leaders, so that you will have a variety of op-tions with timing to suit your schedule – we know how busy you are and how important this is to you. Our goal is that you would re-main with the same group throughout the study. Each gathering will last an hour and a half at the agreed upon location. We will have a limit of 6 to 10 participants in each small group.

God’s Work Our Hands Service Weekend

We are partnering with Abiding Savior Lutheran Church to share God’s love with our local community as well as the global community this weekend.

We will begin our weekend on Friday, September 11, with a Meet/Greet/Bless Our Work Dinner at Peking Chef Chi-nese Restaurant in Hickory Ridge.

The service activities begin on Saturday at 9am at New Hope and then continue on Sunday at Abiding Savior. We will end the weekend with a Desserts and Discussion time before our last big event of the weekend. The final event will be a Community Movie Night on September 13. At this time, plans are still in the works for an evening event on Saturday, September 12. Begins Children's Sunday School begins on Sunday, Sep-tember 13, at 10:00 am! Registration is underway. We are asking all new and returning families to reg-ister. Look for the registration table in the Narthex between services, or visit our website at www.NewHopeLutheran.org and open the link enti-tled Sunday School Registration 2015-2016 on our home page.

On the first day of Sunday School, all children will begin in their classrooms and gather for a God's Work Our Hands activity in Fellowship Hall at the end of the hour. Starting September 20, children in Preschool through 6th grade will meet in the church service @10:00 am. Following the children's ser-mon, they will move to their classrooms for a lesson. Middle School (7th and 8th grade) and High School will meet in their classrooms every Sunday @10:00 am.

Howard County is one of the richest areas in the country, yet, for many residents, achieving self-sufficiency has become increasingly difficult. The Association of Community Services will present an update of the Self Sufficiency Indicators Report, which includes five categories:

Learn what ACS’s advocacy priorities are for our community and how you can use this data to be-come involved in helping others.

Giving as we have been given… Because of you, New Hope sent 40 final exam survival bags to our local Lutheran Campus Ministry partners at the end of each semester last year, plus Christmas cards & candy bars to some 30 New Hope college students studying elsewhere, providing gentle reminders of support and encouragement for our college-aged members of our community.

College Fair!

Confirmation is a significant milestone in the faith life of our youth. It is a time when they are able to explore their faith through study, dis-cussion and service.

The Confirmation program at New Hope is a two-year cycle of instruction and inquiry, usually for those in 7th & 8th grades. We use the program “Here We Stand,” offered by Augsburg Fortress Publish-ing. Confirmation classes are scheduled for every Wednesday evening from 5:30-7:15pm from Sep-tember through May. Each session consists of a large group-themed lesson, a meal and a small group discussion.

On Wednesday, September 9, at 7:30pm there will be a meeting for parents to introduce the program and to plan for the upcoming year. Confirmation classes for students will begin the next Wednesday, September 16, at 5:30pm.

Because of you, New Hope provides tailored Christian education throughout the year to learners of all ages -- Sunday School, Adult Sunday School, Faith Matters, GIFT, Vacation Bible School, Adult Bible Camp, Young Adult Bible Study, Wednesday Bible Study, Summer education series, and other targeted Small Group studies.

Giving as we have been given… Because of you, New Hope is able to put literally thousands more dollars into ministry each year, freed up by the labors of congre-gation members who volunteer to do work maintaining our church facility that we would otherwise have to pay service provid-ers to do. For example, some two dozen vol-unteers take turns mowing, at least twice, some three times over the season; two addi-tional key volunteers -- Fred Kurrle and Er-ic Butler -- spend an additional 150 hours per year doing yard maintenance. Their time makes a difference in ensuring New Hope is a welcoming place, and in allowing financial resources to go to ministry.

Did you know that one of the most innovative minis-tries serving the underserved is right in our own pro-verbial backyard?

Diakon Kathryn's Kloset -- DKK, for short -- solicits contributions of new, unused products and dry goods from companies large and small, generally items which were mislabeled or remained following a pro-motion that has ended, goods which the companies otherwise would have destroyed. DKK then partners with charitable organizations who have needs for the very same products. Their efforts allow us as a com-munity to help the underserved and deserving, while minimizing waste of perfectly good items that simply don't meet the commercial need any longer.

Originally a home-grown initiative run by Executive Director Wade Brown and named in honor of his mother's example, DKK is now part of Diakon's Child, Family, and Community Ministries family of services, on whose board I serve.

There's a constant flow of goods at the DKK warehouse.

Did You Know?

In 2014 alone, DKK provided an estimated 390,900 items to some 250,000 people, working with more than 186 different partner organizations.

Think laundry detergent and mattresses for homeless shelters, shoes and backpacks for kids in Baltimore, dry goods for food pantries.... The combinations are seemingly endless. This is truly stewardship in action -- stewarding resources while serving those in need. And it is just one of the kinds of ministries we as a congregation support, with many others, through the benevolence we pay forward to the Synod and larger church through our tithes and offerings.

GIFT Begins Friday, October 9th! Growing In Faith Together (GIFT), New Hope’s monthly intergenerational faith for-mation event will take place on the second Friday of the month from October to May. The first one will be on October 9. This year’s theme is Spiritual Practices. Together we’ll explore many different kinds of spiritual practices that help not only to ground our faith, but also to help grow our faith.

As always, we begin the evening at 6 pm with dinner (no need to bring anything, we’ll have all the food pre-pared for you), followed by an introduction to the evening’s topic and a time of more in-depth learning and interaction. At the close of the evening we will come together to share our experiences and end in prayer. You will also be given materials to take home and use. The evening will end at about 7:30 pm.

GIFT is for those of all ages and circumstances: singles, couples, parents, kids, teens, families, college stu-dents, retirees, visitors, empty nesters, young adults – everyone! Bring your neighbors and friends along, too!

Update!! We're Kicking Things Off in September!

BERT -- your friendly Building Expansion and/or Renovation Team -- is back to let everyone know that we're officially kicking off the contract with the Kerns Group Architects as of Monday, September 28.

As you recall, this first contract is focused on what is known as the Master Plan-ning Process -- a structured way to gather input and ideas from across the congre-gation, combine them with county building code and other construction parame-ters, and leverage the skills of architects with extensive experience working with religious organizations on how sacred spaces can best enable and improve wor-ship and ministry.

This contract is budget neutral. It uses dedicated funds that were given to the congregation explicitly for this kind of professional assistance to help us envision what can be.

Stay tuned: we will be scheduling sessions for Kerns Group to meet with New Hope's ministry teams, staff, and everyone who is interested in providing input, hopes, dreams, frustrations with the current facility, and as-pirations for the future....

Giving as we have been given.... Because of you, many of our neighbors without housing have received free medical care through the Route One Free Medical Clinic. Dur ing the two years covered by a grant secured by our own Linda Yergey, grant monies and additional critical donations from our congregation provided $787 in dental care, $3281 in X-rays and lab care, $1653 for medical supplies for the clinic and patients, $3274 for visits to medical/surgical specialists, $537 for vaccines, and $2540 for medical prescriptions -- resources that make a critical difference in the lives of the homeless.
