History and lifetime extensionThe SMIT debris grab ‘HDW1’ has been put into action successfully for many wreck removal projects during its respectful 30 years of age.

It is one of the biggest salvage debris grabs in its class with a net grabbing capacity of 600 tonnes. Originally built as a conventional salvage debris grab with mechanical means (wire ropes) for closing the grab, the grab has been given a complete lifetime extension in 2007, including an innovative conversion of the mechanical wire rope system into an electrical-hydraulic actuation of the grab which increases the grabbing force.

Technical DescriptionThe grab in operation is connected to the blocks of a sheerlegs crane to control the hoisting height/depth of the grab. The grab itself is equipped with three vertical mounted hydraulic cylinders for opening and closing of the grab.

The cylinders are actuated by means of a subsea power pack mounted within the steel construction of the grab. The electrical power supply to the grab is provided by an umbilical winch from the main deck of the sheerlegs.

The grab operation is PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) controlled and the operation can be monitored from the control room at the surface.
