4-H News On Sunday, May 22nd the Eden Stampede 4-H club went to Cheers to Monet in Hamburg. We painted a silhouette of a horse grazing in the sunset. Our instructors, Nicole and Nikki showed us how to paint a step. After they taught us, Nicole cranked the music up loud and we sang along and danced to the music while we painted! Nicole told us that what we were painting was an adult leveled painting! We were all in shock because they all looked amazing in the end. If you go to the Erie County fair this summer you might see some of our paintings in the 4-H building.

Faith Bible Baptist Church News

On May 15, the Faith Bible Baptist Church of Eden held a special service to celebrate their 33rd Anniversary. Their pastor, Pastor Art Kohl, started the church in 1983. The congregation will be forever grateful for his dedicated love and faithfulness to serving the residents of Eden, Angola, and the surrounding communities. Throughout the years, he has sacrificially spent his time preaching and teaching God’s Word, counseling marriages and families, visiting people in their homes, hospitals and nursing homes, and conducting funerals and weddings. He is also the author of many literature pamphlets on various topics. As a result of His ministry, the church has seen many people come to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. Because of Pas-tor Kohl’s love for the Lord and burden for people, God has also allowed him to start two other churches (The Evans Chapel of Angola, and BrightWay Baptist Church of Cattaraugus). He has been and continues to be a Biblical example of a man of God who proclaims the truth in love.

Gene annotation? Here in Eden? Mrs. Berne and Mr. Kwas attended a two-week summer work-shop at the University at Buffalo where they received training in the use of the Integrated Microbial Genomes Annotation Collaboration Toolkit (IMG-ACT) of the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute. WNY Genetics in Research Partnership Project activities will focus on basic genome analysis and bioinformatics, and the partnership will be directed by the University at Buffalo Depart-ment of Biotechnical and Clinical Laboratory Sciences (BCLS) and the New York State Area Health Education Center System (NYS AHEC). This project was funded by the National Science Founda-tion. During this school year each teacher worked with up to 5 stu-dents on a gene annotation of the bacteria Kytococcus sedentarius using the IMG-ACT. Each student was given a gene, a section of DNA, broken down into the nitrogenous base code letters of A,T,G, and C to work on. Those letters can be translated into the amino acid sequence or protein produced. These segments are then run through several computer programs for predicting gene functions, statistical gene prediction and search of general-purpose databases for sequence similarity. By comparing the gene to other organisms one can determine the location, structure and enzymatic function of the protein. The final results are now on display in the Eden High School near room 24 and 25. On May 20th a Capstone Symposium was held at the University of Buffalo, bringing participating students and teachers from vari-ous districts together to present their projects and to interact with university faculty, researchers and bioscience employers. Pictured are: Marissa Kordal, Isabel Grabenstatter, Kristen Pszonak, Jeremy Kazimer, Jarred O’Connor; Megan Cassidy, Austin Feasley, Zoe Je-rome, Gabrielle Snyder Mr. Kwas also worked with the control group of students that were not randomly selected for the annotation. They worked on several other genetic projects including DNA extraction, gel electro-phoresis, and three different science crowdsourcing websites: Fold.it – a protein folding game who’s results generated by online players have already accrued multiple publications in Nature journals since the game’s launch in May 2008; EteRNA – where players develop virtual RNA molecules and the top designs are actually synthesized in a lab at Stanford University; and Phylo – a Tetris-like approach to multiple sequence alignment, challenging players to line up rows of colored blocks to help identify important DNA sequences. Our exciting genetic news does not end here as Mr. Kwas has agreed to continue the annotation project with Dr. Stephen Koury and Dr. Rama Dey-Rao from the Department of Biotechnical and Clinical Laboratory Sciences at the University of Buffalo. Also Mr. Philip Archabald will be going through the Summer training so that he can incorporate the gene annotation project into his new Bio-technology course here at the Eden Jr/Sr High School.

members of City Fire Departments - We are all VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS. No one is salaried. Participation in required training is all accomplished during the volunteer’s

time away from work and family. Each year our firefighters raise funds through our annual fund drive and at the annual Corn Festival. This money helps to enhance

services and equipment utilized to provide even better protection to our community. We will remain a no Fee service.
