Welcome to our 2010 Winter Workbook. On the following pages we’ll introduce

you to our range of warm, insulated and waterproof garments.

We proudly manufacture our products in our own factory and outsource just a

small portion. We don’t want to rely on the capabilities of someone else’s plant.

This limits development and makes brands look the same. Our aim is to

produce garments that provide something for everyone - whether you’re an

extreme downhill skier, an adventurous cross-country hiker or someone simply

living and working in a cool climate. For us at 66°North, creating clothes that

help you manage dramatic conditions has become second-nature. We know all

about extreme weather. At times we only have to open our front door to witness

the most severe of conditions!

We in the North Atlantic live with the daily reminder of global warming. Our

country is made up of 11% glaciers which are retreating at an alarming rate.

Caring about our planet, the environment and climate change caused by pollu-

tion comes naturally to us Icelanders. For the past two years 66°North has joined

forces with the Icelandic Mountain Guides to run the successful “Reach the Top

with 66°North” programme. This programme has allowed several hundred people

to climb the highest peak in Iceland, Hvannadalshnúkur which is located in

Vatnajökull, Europe’s biggest glacier. We use this event as an opportunity to guide

these climbers to their goal while teaching them the importance of protecting

our natural environment. It provides us with an excellent forum to highlight the

threat global warming poses to our glaciers.

We count ourselves lucky to live in a country with abundant renewable energy

resources like geothermal power. We are working as a company to minimise our

waste, recycle our garbage and send our garments by sea instead of air. We choose

to build partnerships with similar forward-thinking companies like Polartec® to

ensure we work with sustainable materials.

66°North has a long history. In fact we’re approaching our 84th year. Our long

life as a company has brought with it an appreciation that we must incorporate

sustainable practices into our business. Our goal is to continue creating the very

best clothing we can while taking every opportunity to reduce our footprint.

For thousands of years, carbon dioxide and other gases have warmed the surface of our planet naturally by trapping solar heat in the atmosphere. This so-called greenhouse effect has kept our planet habitable.

By burning fossil fuels, coal, gas and oil and clearing forests we have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth s atmosphere. As a result temperatures are rising. Most scientists agree that global

warming is real, that is not a natural occurrence and that it is the result of human activities. We are already seeing changes. Glaciers are melting and plants and animals are being forced from their natural habitats.

Extreme weather conditions, the number of hurricanes, the severity of storms and the number of droughts is increasing. The flow of ice from glaciers in Greenland has more than doubled over the past decade. With the

same rate of change the arctic ocean could be ice free in summer by 2050.

There is no doubt this problem needs to be solved. We are obliged to do so. And small changes to our daily routines can add up to big differences and help stop global warming.

And turn down the heat in your home by 2 °F/1°C. By doing so you save money on the energy bill and save the earth from

more than 1/3 of a ton of CO2 emissions per

year.

If every household in the UK replaced just 1 regular lightbulb

with an energy saving lightbulb, it would be enough to shut down

a power station.

Bring your own travel mug to work, school or on the go. Disposable cups keep your coffee

hot, however 1000 years after your last

gulp, your empty cup will still be around.

Plant a tree or grow your own tomato

garden. Plants take in CO2 and pump

out oxygen. A single tree provides enough oxygen for 2 people for their entire lives.

To work, school or to the store. Doing so just once a week

will give the planet a much needed break from your car s CO2

emissions.

Paper or plastic? Skip the in-store

moral dilemma and bring your own bag. If 1 million people

switched to reusable bags, we would

eliminate the need for 1 billion plastic

bags.

If 1 million people washed their clothes in cold water instead

of hot, we would eliminate 250.000 tons of CO2 per year. This will also keep your colours brighter.

Remember to unplug your appliances at

home. Even when they are off they still use electricity. TV s and DVD s alone waste 1 $ billion in lost

electricity in the US annually.

Use public transportation. A bus can carry the same number of people as 50 cars, subways and

trains, hold even more. For every mile you

travel, public transport uses ½ the fuel a private

car does.

On average, each item in your local supermarket has

travelled at least 1000 miles to get to you.

Buying local produce reduces the amount of energy used for

transportation.

Nordic and alpine skiing is synonymous with mainland Scandinavian countries. Icelanders are equally keen on all

types of skiing, especially in the back country. Whether you live in Iceland, or are just visiting, you quickly learn

the best way to get around is by strapping on a pair of snowshoes, cross country or telemark skis. A typical day

might fi nd Icelanders skiing on the Akureyri slopes in the afternoon before relaxing in a natural geothermal pool

without weight, compressibility and breathability. They are the most technically advanced of the

Polartec® insulation fabrics, achieving the utmost versatility and performance under extreme

conditions. This level of performance is critical when all you have is what you can carry.

Polartec® Power Dry®Polartec® Power Dry® has a patented knit construction that uses different yarns on either side of the

fabric. This moisture management system allows one surface to move moisture away from the skin

performance in the real world, so they developed an extensive field-testing team to learn

from actual users about the performance level of their fabrics.

The American Alpine Institute gives eVENT® waterproof fabrics the prestigious 2007

Guides Choice Award. The AAI award is one of the strongest endorsements in the outdoor

industry regarding performance and durability of specific products and technology.Guides

Choice testers found that eVENT® waterproof fabrics let sweat escape far more rapidly

than other waterproof/breathable fabrics do. They found that eVENT® fabrics stayed dry

on the inside and caused them to overheat less, making them more comfortable than

when they trekked, climbed, or slept in other fabrics. The testers noted that because they

sweated less in eVENT®, they were less susceptible to post-exercise chill and dehydration.

Testers found eVENT® generally more comfortable in both dry and wet conditions.

Why do we sweat?

Sweating is a natural process, part of what you could call the natural air conditioning

of the human body. When we exercise our muscles produce heat. The body must stay at

a homeostatic or steady-state of temperature, therefore it must find a way to cool itself.

We balance our core temperature by sweating. Sweating essentially balances our body

temperature by evaporative cooling.

Merino Wool

66°North only uses the highest quality Merino wool for its base layers.

While all wool retains its insulative qualities when wet, only

exceptionally fine wool such as Merino wool can wick moisture away from

the skin. We’re confident that our wool is the best in the world for use

as a moisture-managing base layer. And it is exceptionally soft against the

skin, itch free and machine washable.

Pertex® QuantumTough and durable

Pertex® Quantum is a featherweight fabric at around d 30g/m2 (0.9o/yd2) made from

the finest yarns available with the maximum thread count. Less weight shouldn‘t mean

´please be careful´. Pertex® Quantum stands its ground and shows the best strength to

weight ratio. Tear strength and seam strength are good for its weight. Pertex® Quantum

is used in shell jackets and withstands the abuse of hardcore use. Its abrasion resistance

however it is not comparable with standard weight 44 decitex fabrics.

How does it benefit the user?

Pertex® Quantum is light and strong. It has a 25-50% weight reduction without

sacrificing its strength or abrasion resistance. It also has 50% less packing volume

compared to standard 44 decitex fabrics. Thanks to its dense weave Pertex® Quantum

is downproof and can be used for high-end applications including sleeping bags, down

jackets and expedition gear.

Pertex® Enduranceatmosphere. At the same time light rain or snow cannot penetrate

the outer shell, therefore the insulation remains drier and more efficient.

Here is how it works:

The thermal efficiency of down and synthetic insulation reduces significantly when

exposed to moisture. Pertex® Endurance keeps moisture out over extended periods

ensuring the filling is totally dry and fully efficient. Compared to other shell fabrics,

Pertex® Endurance is 100% windproof. This property increases the thermal efficiency of

the garment, as warm air can‘t escape and remains trapped inside. Pertex® Endurance

makes your garment warmer and drier while maintaining a low weight and excellent

packability.

How to wash waterproof/breathable shells

Regular washing of your Toray® -fabricated garment will enhance product performance.

Your garment may be machine washed in warm water (40°C)

with liquid detergent. You may also use Nikwax® Tech Wash. We also

recommend a second rinse to remove all traces of detergent from the fabric.

We recommend you drip-dry your garment. Remember also to refer to the garment

manufacture’s guidelines.

• Do not use fabric softeners

• Do not bleach

• Do not dry clean

We recommend that you avoid ironing the garment, but if you do use the steam, setting on

no higher temperature than “warm”. At some temperatures, the heat from the iron can have

a rejuvenating effect on the DWR finish but there is a greater potential for fabric damage if

the iron is too hot.

How to maintain water repellency on waterproof/breathable shells

Your Toray® -fabricated garment contains a durable water repellent finish (DWR) on the

exterior of the fabric that serves as a first barrier to penetration of the fabric by external

water. This DWR finish degrades over time and will occasionally need to be replenished. You

will be able to tell when this water repellency has degraded because water will cease to bead

up on the fabric. Even though the waterproof Toray membrane is still keeping the water

from passing through the fabric, performance will be increased if you maintain the DWR

finish with regular treatments. We suggest treating with the DWR finish at the same time

as your regular garment washings. Once the garment has been washed, we recommend

using Nikwax® TX-Direct to completely restore surface water-repellency. It is available in

both spray-on and wash-in versions. For more information on Nikwax products visit: www.

What is it?

Pertex® Endurance technology incorporates an ultra-thin membrane with durable

nylon face fabrics. This layer is so thin that it hardly adds any weight, nor does it affect

the softness of the material considerably. The main objective of Endurance fabrics is to

provide maximum protection from moisture both from outside and inside.

Is it Waterproof?

Pertex® Endurance is 100% windproof and very breathable, also at low temperatures

in addition to being highly water resistant (1000 mm water column). Endurance works

by allowing the water vapour produced by the body to diffuse freely to the outside

PrimaLoft® One

PrimaLoft® One insulation absorbs 3 times less water, is 15% warmer when dry and is

24% warmer when wet than the closest competitive insulation. PrimaLoft® One is the

ultimate down-like microfibre insulation. The patented ultrafine microfibre blend is

specially treated in a proprietary process and then combined into an insulating core

that is incredibly soft, lightweight and water repellent.

PrimaLoft® One is soft and light, and insulates so well that holding a piece of it in the

hand feels like holding warm air. The amazing softness achieved in this process makes

any PrimaLoft® product more comfortable to wear and increase mobility by reducing

friction of movement in the garment.

PrimaLoft‘s proprietary process utilizes specially treated water repellent microdenier

fibres. The fibres are then structured together to create millions of insulating air pockets

that retain body warmth and form a fine framework that repels water. The fibres are so

PrimaLoft® One is wind resistant, breathable and dries faster than down. PrimaLoft®

One is as warm and soft as down and compresses like down. It has superior water

We do recognise that in some of our classic styles our European sizing does not increase/decrease in consistent increments. In order to accommodate our customer requests, all new styles that we introduce will be consistently sized. We are changing the chest and hip measurements to an even 6 cm between sizes.
