STATEMENT O F WORK ( I N C L U D E SUB-CONTROL'S RESPONSIBIL ITY, AUTHORIT IES D E L E G A T E D AND RESERVED)

The nuclear rockets studied would incorporate graphite reactors and would be in the 1 X 10° # thrust range. The study would be concentrated on reducing the cost per pound of payload. Special emphasis would be placed on reducing the fuel loading by utilizing the hydrogen propellant and minimizing reactor poisons, reducing the cost of the reflector and simplifying the design.

STATEMENT OF WORK ( I N C L U D E SUB-CONTROL'S RESPONSIBIL ITY, AUTHORIT IES DBLBOATED AND RESERVED)

Mission requirements for nuclear rockets below 25,000 pound thrust would be established. A design study would then be carried out on both moderated and non-moderated reactors from the standpoint of materials, nuclear design, mechanical design, thermodynamic design to determine the feasibility of meeting these requirements. If feasibility is established a conceptual design would be completed, and a devolopnent program with costs would be outlined.

Most nuclear rockets studied have had specif ic impulses less than 1000 #-sec/#. If higher specif ic impulses can be obtained with combination systems then these systems wi l l increase the payload po ten t i a l of nuclear rockets .

U. Wl^ should i t be done here:

We have bes t design capab i l i t i e s and experience on gas-cooled reac to r s . We have personnel that are extremely capable of performing the integrat ion of these gas-cooled systems with the e l e c t r i c arc system.

Status Investigated once previously as to feasibility of testing supersonic (P122C3) power plant but size restrictions and exhaust temperatures were quite severe. Preliminary studies (W/E 9/9/6l) indicate matching of CTF-1 to folded flow is practical .for lower temperatures and lower powers.

General applicability Useful for development into light weight, packaged power generating system at outputs of approximately J+O thermal MW for remote site usage. Operating as a closed cycle would alleviate problem of fission fragment contamination as system would be purged only when atmospheric conditions permit. Closed cycle operation would alleviate problem of wire screen blockage to sand and dust ingestion.

Why should it be done here CTF-1 and the Folded Flow Reactor were both conceived and designed at ANPD and the technology accumulated on the folded flow reactor plus our fabrication and operating experience on HTRE I & II would make us the logical choice.

Status.

Literature surveys have been conducted and several proposed designs have been laid out for the purpose of studying their effectiveness, applicability, and performance penalties when applied to air breathing apparatus.

General applicability.

Could be used to remove sand, grit and dust from air entering air cooled reactors and other apparatus breathing atmospheric air in large quantities. Mightalso be applied where atmospheric air is utilized in a secondary cooling circuit.

Why should it be done here.

Particular applications will probably have efficiency requirements and performance penalty limitations which are unique to these applications and rule out the possibility of utilizing commercially available equipment. Personnel in other Company departments have already worked with us in determining the aerodynamic and thermocynamic effects of dust and grit deposition on heat transfer surfaces.

Air flow systems and operators are available in the Department with means of adding grit as may be required. These loops can be operated both cold and up to 2500°F.

JUSTIFICATION

S t a t u s .

WorV is just being initiated to investigate rolling friction requirements on unlubricated bearing applications.

General applicability.

Could be used in any reactor application where control drums are to be rotated or in the A115D where the fuel elements are to be rotated in and out of the core region to allow primary heat generation to occur in a smaller active core volume and heat removal at a more advantageous location. Speeds envisioned are 10 RPS and life requirements in the order of 500 hours.

Why should it be done here.

Hig^ temperature bearing studies have been carried on in the Department for a number cjf years as to sliding friction at these temperatures. Test apparatus such as furnaces and torque measuring devices are available within the Department to allow an orderly investigation into combinations of materials that appear attractive from room temperature to 1500°F. Data has been accumulated in the Department as to wear rates, deposition rates, galling characteristics, and coefficients of friction of a great many high temperature materials to date which could be screened for this application.

Job AENF RM-2

(l) Is it underway

This work is not specifically covered now but represents an extension of work done for the Dl +OE. The additional facets include use of a wide range of BeO concentration and incorporation of methods for compacting the core.

(2) Status . . .

A wide base of work has been done on the BeO system, aimed specifically at the DlUOE arrangement, but little work has been done to consolidate the available information or to extend its general utility.

(3) General applicability . . .

The general applicability of this job is a primary objective to permit use in parametric work.

iS) Why should it be done here , . .

The work should be done here because of the accumulated experience in the design of BeO systems at GE-ANPD.

JUSTIFICATION

Job No.

I s i t underway? Yes

S t a t u s :

Nuclear Parametric data has been generated for fast reactors fueled with U^35o2 _ jto u235o2 - W, u235o2^2 " ^ 2 ^ ° ^ ^ ° 2 " "^^P*

General applicability:

Fast reactors have the advantage of small size, high core temperatures and h i ^ void volume fractions. The result is higjh power per unit voliime. This is very advantageous for mobile power plants. The proposed study would yield parametric information from which the most advantageous fast reactor could be selected for a specific mobile power plant application.

Why should it be done here:

GE-ANPD has developed unique methods to generate parametric information using variational optimum transport theory and perturbation theory whicii minimize the cost and time involved. GE-ANPD has also developed fast reactor cross sections which when used with these methods have correlated very closely with available fast reactor critical experiment data.
