Unity is the hallmark of a good design. Its the fnalresult in a composition when all the designelements work harmoniously togethergiving the

viewer a satisfying sense of belonging andrelationship.

    What is Unit ?

Unity creates an integrated image in which all theelements are working together to support the design

as a whole. A unied design is seen as a whole frst!before the individual elements are noticed . Unity canbe compared to harmony! integrity or wholeness.

    Unity " #ne or wholeness

In many respects! Unity is the single mostimportant design principle.

A design with strong Unity $possessing denitecharacter% is more satisfactory than one that is

    profuse in detail.

&uman perception involves the process ofobserving the important elements in the eld ofvision! followed by attention to detail! reverting to a

nal reassessment of the ma'or elements $leadingthe eye from the whole to the parts%.

Alberti and many others have considered the acmeof design to be the achievement of unity! to which

nothing can be added and rom which nothingcan be subtracted without disadvantage.

)*he arrangement of parts by which unrelatedob'ects are so placed that the mind loses sight othem as individual parts and notes only thecombination as a whole. *his +uality of unity isfundamental for design e,cellence.

*he e,pression of oneness resulting from integrityo orm (without), purpose (within) andcharacter (maniestation o purpose).

    When unity is achieved

*he individual elements with in a composition willnot be competing for attention.

*he key theme will be communicated more clearly.

*he design will evoke a sense of completeness andorgani-ation.

Gestaltis a psychology term which means "unifedwhole". It refers to theories of visual

perception developed by erman psychologists inthe /012s.

Unity is based on the gestalt theory of visualperception! which states that the eye o the viewerseeks a gestalt or unifed whole.*his means thatthe viewer is actually looking for a connectionbetween the elements! for some sort of organi-ation!for unity in the design.

Unity may result from the establishment of a denite dominant and

subordinate relationship between elements. Inter relationship of analogous components. Repetition a similar proportional unit. Use of an overriding structural e,pression

*he sense of Unity may be destroyed when

Unity results rom balanced composition>balance possesses stability! an importantcharacteristic in achieving Unity.

    Achievement of Unity pro'ects #a prooundsense o harmony$.

Unity or %armony is the condition of agreementof all visual elements within a composition.
