FROM FATHER CHUCK

Welcome back! I am typing this note earlier in the week so we can get it to our printers to have hard copies for the weekend. As usual, it will also get posted on our website, but I don’t have the luxury of the extra days of the week. Even though it is several days away, I find myself smiling when I think about being able to have public Masses again and alt-hough we are limited in how many can come and there are many who are still staying home for good health reasons, it feels good to be able to start back toward an eventual full return.

By the time you read this we will have had meetings with our cleaning teams, preparing for your return. I’m so grate-ful and impressed with the willingness of those asked to step up and commit to this role. It is a crucial part of us being able to open the churches because these teams will disinfect the pews and touched areas of the church after every Mass on the weekend. As the good sisters used to tell us, “Many hands make light the work.” I think if we can maintain 5 or 6 people on a team for each Mass, the cleaning will be fairly quick. THANK YOU in advance to all who will be helping, you are worthy disciples!

We also will have had a meeting with the liturgical ministers to prepare for our return and a few things we will be do-ing differently. I am grateful for the ministers who will be serving, for their flexibility and service in helping us resume litur-gies. THANK YOU as well! Several of our Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors have chosen not to return to Mass just yet, we’ll be missing them, but it is certainly wise if they are feeling susceptible to catching this virus.

While I’m on the subject of gratitude, I want to mention all those who have sustained the church during these past months. Many of you have given financially in the same manner as you would have done had the church doors been open, which has been such a help. Many also have given over and above what they normally would give, knowing that some cannot give at this time. To all who have given, THANK YOU!

There are others who have worked and ministered to keep the building looking good and to keep our office open all during this time. I applaud our parish staff and volunteer staff for their tenacity and consistency. We have had challenges along the way, and will have more before this virus passes us, yet the staff has helped and supported Fr. Lucio and me in countless ways so that we could still minister and also could celebrate Mass daily. THANK YOU!

If you were able to view our Masses on YouTube, you saw that some parishioners were also able to serve at Mass. I have appreciated their calm flexibility as well. A key player in our livestreaming of Sunday Mass has been JB Benna, one of our parishioners. He has come with a carload of equipment, hauling back and forth, up & down the stairs, almost every Sunday so that we would have the best presentation of the Mass. This has been a labor of love on his part and we are grateful. Thanks to a generous donation that Bishop Calvo received, we are looking into purchasing some permanent equipment for livestreaming Masses and other events at the Cathedral. JB will be helping us get that set up as well. To JB, Jennifer & family, THANK YOU!

As you walked into the church, you surely noticed the new sanctuary floor, completed only a couple of weeks ago. Chris Black, of CB Tile & Stone, was the craftsman, along with his staff, and I think he did a beautiful job. Anne Buja helped oversee the project from beginning to end and I’m grateful to her as well. (She also has been polishing up and restoring our beautiful copper doors again as well as our holy water fonts.) There were many others from the parish who gave of their time and muscle to tear up the old floor, move the very heavy altar, change electrical outlets, paint, polish, and repair lots of things that became obvious once the new floor was going in. THANK YOU to all who worked on this beau-tiful project!

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, a time when we recognize that the very nature of God is communal, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Inspired by this community, we come together, whether still at home or here in the church building. Inspired by our triune God we accomplish the works of God in caring for the Church, not only its building, but its people. Many of you have been involved in a phone ministry during this time, checking up on and praying for one another. Many have prayed for this parish while others have worked to care for it. Still others have labored in the greater community in which we live to care for those who are sick, to provide for our basic needs and to preserve our safe-ty. As a community of faith, we are filled with the Holy Spirit. Let us celebrate with joy and gratitude who we are, whose we are, and what has been given to us! ¡Bienvenidos! Estoy escribiendo estas notas a principios de la semana para enviar el boletín a la imprenta a tiem-po. Como de costumbre, el boletín se publicará en nuestro sitio web, simplemente que esta semana no tengo el lujo de días adicionales para escribir mis notas. A pesar de que faltan unos días, sonrió al pensar que podremos reanu-dar las Misas públicas. A pesar de que estamos limitados en cuántas personas pueden asistir y hay bastantes per-sonas que optaran por quedarse en casa por razones de salud, es confortante iniciar el eventual retorno completo de las liturgias.

Cuando lea esta nota, preparándonos para su regreso, habremos ya tenido reuniones con los equipos de limpieza que se encargaran de desinfectar la iglesia. Estoy muy agradecido e impresionado con la disponibilidad de quienes se han comprometido para esta tarea. Es una parte crucial para poder reabrir las iglesias. Como solían decirnos las monjas, "muchas manos hacen que el trabajo sea ligero". Creo que si podemos mantener 5 o 6 personas por equi-po para cada Misa, la limpieza será bastante rápida. ¡GRACIAS de antemano a todos los que van a ayudar, ustedes son discípulos dignos!

También tendremos una reunión con los ministros litúrgicos en preparación para nuestro regreso y algunas cosas que se harán de manera diferente. Agradezco a los ministros que están disponibles para reanudar las liturgias, por su flexibilidad y por su servicio. ¡GRACIAS! Algunos de nuestros Ministros han optado por no regresar a Misa aún, los echaremos de menos, pero es ciertamente una decisión prudente por el bien de su salud.

Mientras estoy en el tema de la gratitud, quiero mencionar a todos aquellos que han apoyado económicamente a la iglesia durante estos últimos meses. Muchos de ustedes han dado de la misma manera que lo habrían hecho si las puertas de la iglesia hubieran estado abiertas, lo cual ha sido de gran ayuda. Algunos dieron más de lo que nor-malmente darían, sabiendo que algunos no pueden dar en este momento. A todos los que han dado, ¡GRACIAS!

Si usted tuvo la oportunidad de ver nuestras Misas en YouTube, vio que algunos feligreses pudieron servir en la Misa. Estoy muy agradecido por su flexibilidad y calma. Una persona clave en nuestra transmisión en vivo de la Misa Dominical ha sido JB Benna, uno de nuestros feligreses. Ha venido con un carrito lleno de equipo, acarreando el equipo de un lado a otro, subiendo y bajando las escaleras, casi todos los Domingos para que pudiéramos tener la mejor presentación de la Misa. Esto ha sido una labor de amor de su parte y estamos muy agradecidos. Gracias a una generosa donación que recibió el Señor Obispo Calvo, esperamos comprar un equipo permanente para la transmisión en vivo de Misas y otros eventos en la Catedral. Al entrar a la iglesia, seguramente noto el nuevo piso del santuario, lo instalaron hace sólo un par de semanas. Chris Black, de CB Tile & Stone, junto con su personal hizo un hermoso trabajo. Anne Buja supervisó el proyecto de principio a fin y también estoy agradecido con ella. (Ella también ha estado pulió y restauro nuestras hermosas puertas de cobre, y las fuentes de agua bendita.) Muchas otras personas dieron de su tiempo y trabajo para quitar el piso viejo, mover el altar muy pesado, cambiar conexiones de la luz, pintar, pulir y reparar un sin número de cosas que se hicieron evidentes mientras instalaban el piso nuevo. ¡GRACIAS a todos los que trabajaron en este hermoso proyecto!

Hoy celebramos la solemnidad de la Santísima Trinidad, tiempo en el que reconocemos que la naturaleza misma de Dios es comunal, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. Inspirados por esta comunidad, nos reunimos, ya sea en casa o aquí en el templo. Inspirados por nuestro Dios trino, realizamos las obras de Dios en el cuidado de la Iglesia, no só-lo de su edificación, sino de su pueblo. Durante este tiempo, varios de ustedes han estado involucrados en el minis-terio telefónico, orando y cuidándose unos a otros. Muchos han orado por esta parroquia, mientras que otros han trabajado para cuidarla. Otros han trabajado en la comunidad en general en la que vivimos para cuidar a los enfer-mos, para satisfacer nuestras necesidades básicas y para preservar nuestra seguridad. RESUMING PUBLIC MASSES IN THE DIOCESE OF RENO IN THE TIME OF THE COVID 19 PANDEMIC

Starting on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, June 7, 2020, parishes in the Diocese of Reno may resume public Masses provided they are ready to proceed with the necessary safety provisions. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “Life and physical health are precious gifts entrust-ed to us by God. We must take reasonable care of them, taking into consideration the needs of others and the common good” (CCC 2288). This moral teaching has guided and will continue to guide our safety protocols during the novel Coronavirus pandemic, especially since there is currently is no vac-cine or proven treatment. Providing a safe environment is paramount as we gather together to wor-ship God, the author of life and source of all goodness.

The protocols for safety follow guidelines and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, the State of Nevada, the resources provided by the USCCB, Catholic liturgical and medical experts, and the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments. Respect Life—We are called to respect life from the moment of conception to natural death. It is noth-ing less than a moral obligation for each of us to be considerate of one another’s health and safety when we come to church. All are asked to follow the protocols for safety in the spirit of justice and charity: in justice, for we owe it to each other as brothers and sisters to care about one another’s life; in charity, for we follow the Golden Rule which Jesus preached in his Sermon on the Mount, “Do unto others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets” (Matthew 7:12).

Some may object or disagree with a given protocol, but all are asked to abide with them. The peace that marks the sanctuary for worship is neither the time nor the place for arguments or confron-tation. For the sake of all, some may be called to put aside personal opinion or sacrifice convenience. Let us all take to heart St. Paul’s admonition: “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience…And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace unto which you were also called in one body” (Col. 3:12; 15).

Vulnerable Persons—While anyone of any age can come down with Covid 19, there are those of us who have a higher risk of severe illness if infected. The Centers for Disease Control lists as vulnera-ble persons people 65 years and older and people of any age with underlying health issues: asthma, chronic lung disease, chronic kidney disease being treated with dialysis, diabetes, compromised im-munity, liver disease, severe heart conditions, and severe obesity. The federal guidelines “Opening Up America Again” advise vulnerable individuals to stay at home during the initial phases of reopen-ing.

A large number of parishioners fall in this category. Some who are 65 years and older may feel healthy enough to shop for groceries or even resume work. We ask them to consult with their health care providers and assess the level of risk if they should choose to come to church. We care about people defined as “vulnerable” but also want to minimize the health risks for them. We also expect individuals to take responsibility for their health.

Some priests, deacons, Eucharistic ministers, and greeters are in the category of vulnerable per-sons. They are all asked to consult with their health care providers if they are to assume liturgical ministry and under what conditions this would be safe for them. There will be necessary adjustments that all are asked to respect.

Parishes should consider having special liturgies only for vulnerable people of limited duration and with an overabundance of social distancing. Dispensation from the Obligation of Sunday Mass—Since the beginning of the pandemic, the bishop has granted a dispensation from the obligation of Sunday Mass in the Diocese of Reno to anyone who should not attend Mass for health reasons or who do not feel safe in coming to church. This dispensa-tion continues until further notice.

Parishes are encouraged to continue livestreaming Masses for those who aren’t able to attend in person. What Will Be Prepared for You When You Come to Church—The church will be cleaned and surface areas and door knobs/handles will be sanitized. There will be hand sanitizing dispensers as you enter and seating will be arranged for social distancing. Social distancing is defined as a minimum of 6 ft. of physical separation front and back and sides. WHAT WE ASK YOU TO DO WHEN YOU COME If you are feeling sick, have a fever, are coughing or sneezing, please stay at home. Please exercise personal hygiene and use the available hand sanitizer. Please, please wear a facial mask. Do it for your neighbor. Wear a mask out of respect for the sanctity of each other’s God-given life. Let it be your offering as you partake of the fruits of the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. Justice done for one’s neighbor is a pleasing offering to God as the prophets proclaimed. Chil-dren two years and younger should not wear a mask. Please leave your name & contact information. Some parishes will ask you to call or email your church your intention to attend a certain Mass or you can bring in this information and drop it in a box or other re-ceptacle at the church’s entrance. Contact tracing is a vital part of containing the spread of Covid 19. Churches that have this information make it readily available for health authorities to do the necessary con-tact tracing. In churches that do not have this information, news media will have to inform the public and parishes will need to figure out who attended a Mass where there has been exposure to the Coronavirus. Observe social distancing. Seating in the church will be marked. Families and couples can sit together but others apart. There will be no handshakes, holding hands, hugs or other forms of physical contact unless people are members of the same household. For the kiss of peace, please greet each other in an appropriate non-contact way. For communion, please follow directions for social distancing. To safeguard against any potential trans-mission of the virus, communion will only be given in the hand. Communion will not be administered on the tongue because of the health risk involved. One may claim a right to receive communion on the tongue, but this is not an absolute right; the right to life supersedes it. The right to life is a natural right; the right to receive on the tongue is a right given by the church. An essential disposition for reception of com-munion is reverence and the practice of communion in the hand extends back to the earliest days of the Church and understood as no less reverent. The disposition of one’s mind and heart determines rever-ence in reception.
