7-Layers of the OSI ModelHigh-Tech Talk - Open Systems Interconnection
Heather BorosNet 101 - Baker College, 2013
This presentation will show a representation of the OSI Model,
Open Systems Interconnection Model, starting with the sending end of the data
transmission and finishing at the receiving end of the transmission.
AKA, let’s send an e-mail.
Layer 7 - Application Layer
“The Application layer serves as the interface between the user and the
network.”
Layer 6 - Presentation Layer
“The Presentation layer translates the converted message data into a language
the receiving computer can
process.”
Layer 5 - Session Layer
“The Session layer starts, stops and
maintains the order of the connection.”
Layer 4 - Transport Layer
“The Transport layer ensures
proper and orderly delivery of the file
or message.”
Layer 3 - Network Layer
“The Network layer routes data from
sender to receiver.”
Layer 2 - Data Link
“The Data Link layer supervises the transmission of of the message by specifying the network and grouping
the data.”
Layer 1 - Physical Layer
“The Physical layer encodes the packets into a recognized signal that will carry them to the receiving
computer.”
“An example would be, analog signals being sent over a telephone line.”
Not over yet….
Now, lets run through this one more time, only this time, we will go backwards through the 7 layers.
It is the only way to get the information to the receiver….

Ahhhh, the end
We have successfully sent an email from one person to another!
Let’s do it again!
