Don Antonio's Dispatch…………

This Wednesday begins the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Each year, beginning on 18 January and lasting to the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul on 25 January, the Catholic Church asks us to pray in a special way that “[we] may be one” (John 17:11). Some of you have met some of the Orthodox clergy that have visited St. Pius X for various Masses, and I have visited a few of their churches as well. The orthodox priests and deacons have become great friends, and even if we don’t have full communion with our two churches, still we have a wonderful communion between us as friends. One of the ways that I will be observing this week of prayer will be attending a fundraiser at St. George Antiochene Orthodox Church for a woman’s monastery in Rives Junction, Michigan. Our fifth grade class will also be visiting Assumption Greek Orthodox Church to get a tour with the priest, Fr. Angelo, as two of the children are Orthodox and attend Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. Certainly the Orthodox are the closest to us in the faith, as they still retain all seven valid sacraments, a valid apostolic succession of bishops, and much of the same faith and rituals as the Catholic Church. Most other Christians only have one or two valid sacraments (baptism and sometimes marriage), but lack bishops who can trace their spiritual lineage back to the apostles, and, therefore, do not have a valid Eucharist. But while with most other Christians there is much that divides us, we all believe in Christ as our Lord, and ask the Holy Spirit to unite us. The rules on attending other Christian churches has varied over the years. Currently, one cannot fulfill one’s Sunday obligation attending a non-Catholic church, unless there is not a Catholic church within a 30-minute drive. And even then, one cannot receive Holy Communion in a non-Catholic church, unless it is an Orthodox church and that priest allows it (which most Orthodox priests will not allow). The Orthodox are the only ones who have a valid Eucharist beside us, though some Prot-estants will refer to what they have as Holy Communion. Still, and I do get asked this from time to time, it is not a problem to attend a non-Catholic church, especially if for a wedding or a funeral. Just realize that their faith is, in some cases, noticeably different than ours, and they may teach things which are contrary to the Catholic faith. Let us, though, ask the Holy Spirit to break down the barriers that divide us, and help others to recognize the fullness of truth, which we, as Catholics, exists in the Catholic Church.

We are close to finishing up the Gospel of Luke. Jesus: A Pilgrimage Chapter 20: Gethesemane 1. The words used to describe Jesus’s emotions-ekthamdeisthai (“greatly distraught”) and ademonein (“troubles”) - are strong ones. How does knowing that Jesus experienced these emotions influence your relationship with

him? 2. At first, Jesus seems to resist his fate. (He “prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. He said, ‘Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me.’ “) Then he seems to accept it. (“Yet, not what I want, but what you want.”) Is that a fair summary of his response in Gethsemane? 3. What do you think enables Jesus to surrender to what the Father had in store for him?
