Open Studios 2011

Welcome to Open Studios 2011, an action packed visual arts project now inits 23rd year. It runs alongside the renowned Newbury Spring Festival andthe two events resonate to provide wonderful cultural experiences in May.

This Directory of Artists is central to Open Studios and can be used all theyear round. It gives a clear outline of the range of opportunities which willenable you to find out more about contemporary art, craft and design. It isaccompanied by our dynamic website www.open-studios.org.uk. Use bothto find your way to artists’ studios, exhibitions, workshops and arts eventsin West Berkshire, North Hampshire, Reading and the borders ofOxfordshire and Wiltshire.

Talking to artists in their working environment is fascinating and offers achance to unlock something of the mystery that surrounds art. The variousapproaches highlight diversity. One artist, who uses exquisite Venetianglass to make beads, says ‘I make miniature pieces of wearable art to beused, treasured and passed down to future generations to enjoy’.

A furniture maker works with sustainably sourced, temperate hardwoods tocreate furniture with ‘quiet presence’. A painter sees his work as ‘a series ofnegotiations between image, time and materials. This concern to unite thephysical and the psychological is central to his practice’, while anotherexpresses her excitement at going out, getting close to nature and ‘paintingwhat I feel’.

All of the artists are represented in our flagship exhibition INSIGHT 2011 atNew Greenham Arts. The gallery is stunning and it is possible to purchase awork of art, as you can in the studios, feeling confident of it’s provenance.

Other exhibitionsinclude a small group ofartists, painters andpotters at Sir TerenceConran’s Benchmarkand the annualexhibition at ArlingtonArts called ReceivedWisdom, where there isalso a sculpture trail. The West BerkshireHospital hosts both asignificant exhibitionand workshops forpatients in the CharlesClore Day Therapy Unit.At the Corn Exchange,Newbury, a group ofartists have beeninspired by groundbreaking dance andmusic performancesand present a showwhich reflects theirresponses.

Bring out your creativeside by taking part infree hands-onworkshops in studios orvenues such as theWhitchurch Silk Mill and the amazing Stanley Spencer murals in theSandham Memorial Chapel. What about visiting a school to see whatinnovative work comes out of the art curriculum? This year, three primaryschools are working with a sculptor and a theatre artist on a family learningproject, which begins with a visit to Highclere Castle (think Downton Abbey)to see the Egyptian treasures there.

Open Studios is committed to the notion that art is for everyone. It isreciprocal in that it benefits both artists and visitors of all ages andbackgrounds. To make it possible, administrators and committee memberswork hard throughout the year on a voluntary basis. Profound thanks aredue to each and every one of them.

My work is rich in colour andtexture. I keep my paintings'environments understated toensure the subjects areaccentuated to the full.My most recent collectionconcentrates onimpressionist and abstractwork in oils, on bothtraditional canvas anddirectly on to framed glass. It’s important to me not to be

‘pigeon holed’ into a particular discipline thus remaining free to explorewhatever themes inspire me.

6pm-8pm

Normandy Barcelo-SotoNormandy’s method, much like hislifestyle, does not conform to societalrules, but to those of his own making. His expression, though free andflowing, is in a personal code thatpreserves the core inspiration of eachwork. Though each piece is a freeexpression of Normandy’s honestywith himself, the code teases theaudience as to the message. Manydiscover their own code in one ormore works.

Oxidised colours and form displaymixed elements of a life beset bypersonal torment and triumph. Thecanvas has become the confessional, freeing the conscience, yet guardingthe secret, be it pain or pleasure.

Diana DevonshireInfluenced byyears as a painterand by journeys, the surfaces of myhand builtceramics echo thecurves of the chalklandscapes, theforms andsurfaces of rocks, and the azure blueof seas. My workis essentially sculptural and intended for both interior and exterior spaces.

For me this is areturn to an old genre, since it'sthe first time I’ve worked withlandscape since the early1990’s.

The current series is on quite asmall scale but I have plans towork larger during theremainder of this year. All thepaintings are done on site sinceI’ve never been very good atworking from photographs.

Anne Mackenzie-WebsterAll my images are captured from the natural elements. I also enjoy seeingthe ‘quirky’ moments and reframing the shot to adjust the viewersimagination. I do not filter or manipulate the image or colour unlessexplicitly stated. All my prints are part of a larger portfolio in all sizes fromlarge framed to canvases. My work is a reconciliation ofmy background in costumedesign with my more recentpassion for sculpture and form.My insatiable curiosity for newmaterials and techniquesinevitably leads to a mixedmedia approach, many piecesbeing inspired by a material ortexture alone, the form seemsto evolve from it. Althoughtextile based many piecesincorporate the use of a weather proof textile hardening medium.

A qualified teacher I also offer workshops in sewing and textile sculpture.

As an artistic woodturner, I try toenhance the natural beauty of thewood which I am using. It would bearrogant to attempt to improve it. Inattempting this process ofenhancement, I am fascinated by theinterplay between form, grain, figureand texture – and how much of achallenge it is to balance theseelements so that they compliment, rather than conflict with each other inthe finished piece.

The effects that light and colourhave on landscape and the naturalenvironment, have inspired my silkpaintings this year. Shape and formin nature and the accidental marks, patterns and textures have all cometogether in my work. Using steam fixdyes which give a more vivid colour. It is exciting to see the imagedevelop in an abstract manner.

I have currentlyreturned to my gardenas a subject. Paintingmainly but alsoapplying mixed media, sometimes using acoloured backgroundto give a cohesive fieldto the painting. Thesepictures have a patterned element. This is very much new work, and I amestablishing a rhythm and a way forward.

The Garden of Eden, an ancient concept of a garden, and of course thetemptation of Adam and Eve, the serpent and that beguiling apple - anintriguing subject.

Jane Vaidya Painter 76

For each of my pieces I choose the colourpalette that inspires me at the time. Thecomposition could be either abstract orfigurative. Most of my attention goes to therelations between various colours and textures, rhythm and pattern. I want the viewer to enjoythe vibrant colourful pieces, as well as the settledand balanced ones. My paintings are not copiesof the surrounding world but rather their ownunique being, or the reflections of myself.

Tucked among the hillsof the North HampshireDowns lies the SandhamMemorial Chapel basedon Spencer’s vision of aHoly Box to rememberthe ordinary soldier, anddedicated to the memoryof Lieutenant HarrySandham who died in1920, from malarialillness contracted during active service overseas.

The paintings contained inside the building are considered among hisgreatest achievement, a highly personal view of the Great War and uniquein British art. The juxtaposition of scenes of domestic activity in hospitalsand military duties provide a thoughtful frame for the powerful Resurrectionof the Soldiers which fills the East Wall.
