Grand Knight Message

Father’s Day

“Small boy’s definition of Father’s Day: It’s just like Mother’s Day only you don’t spend so much.” – Unknown Brothers, the month of June brings many happy occasions. There are anniversaries, birthdays, graduations and mostly about Dad. The American Father’s Day began in Spokane, Washington, in 1910, with the daughter of a widow. When Sonora Smart Dodd heard a Mother’s Day sermon in church, she approached her pastor, believing that fathers like hers—a Civil war veteran and single father who had raised six children—deserved recognition, too. Following the initial few years, Father’s Day was all but lost until Dodd returned to Spokane, once again promoting her holiday. Despite support by trade groups and the Father’s Day Council, Father’s Day was rejected by both the general public and Congress until 1966. President Richard Nixon signed the holiday into law in 1972. The official holiday has been in effect for 41 years in the United States, although similar celebrations have been in existence around the globe for much longer. In traditionally Catholic countries, fathers are popularly recognized on the Feast of St. Joseph. Please come celebrate with us on Sunday June 19th at the picnic shelter. If you cannot celebrate with the Council, may you have a wonderful time with your children and grandchildren in all that is festive that day. Our Fraternal year is coming to an end this month and this will be my last message to all of you. I would like to take this chance to thank all of you for your support and dedication throughout the year. As a Council, we had many wonderful events and a lot of chances of fellowship. You have increased our ranks, and many new faces have done extraordinary things this year. I have nothing but pride when I talk about belonging to this Council, and it is because of brothers like we have here, that make us the best. Again, thank you for the chance to be Grand Knight and I will never forget it.

Family and Knight of the Month

Brother Mickey and Carol Marcella. Our Family of the Month is active in our Council and also at St Jerome Church where they are members. Dominick can be found at almost all of the Bingo nights selling tickets and mingling with our clientele. He and Marsha support our lounge and are very welcoming faces when you arrive. They attend all of our events and even hosted a smashing bowling party for our members. They are a wealth of knowledge about our Council and can enlighten you on many subjects. They are good people to know. Please help me congratulate Dominick and Marsha Bavacqua as our Family of the Month for June.

Brother Steve Sprinkle. Our Knight of the Month for June is very active with Bingo and is truly a mainstay to keep Bingo flying. He is a caller and also a member of the committee trying to find ways to improve our Bingo games to help this Council. His ideas are worthy of looking further into and his ideas are inspiring to help Bingo. His calling duties extend to many nights during the week and he keeps a nice flow to the game. Please help me congratulate Steve Sprinkle as Knight of the Month for July.

As this fraternal year comes to a close, I would like to say thank you for all the support I have received throughout this year. To the program directors, thanks to each of you for your efforts in putting forth quality

programs and events time and time again. Your efforts drive this council and make ours the best council in the state. Again, I thank all of my Brother Knights for trusting me to serve as Deputy Grand Knight for this fraternal year. I look forward to continuing to serve this council and the order in years to come. Long-Term Care Plans Offer Peace of Mind

Since its addition to the Order’s product portfolio in 2000, long-term care (LTC) insurance has provided the Knights of Columbus with an excellent opportunity to further serve members and their families. And, for our long-term care policy holders in the United States, there’s an added bonus. As a result of combined efforts of many, our Assembly had another successful year for growth in membership with a total of 12 new Sir Knights. Current membership is 237. We wish Faithful Navigator-Elect Raschke a most successful term. We are saddened by the recent reassignment of our Faithful Friar, SK Rev Father Tyson J Wood, Lieutenant Colonel, US Army, Garrison Chaplain and Garrison Catholic Chaplain at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Fort Eustis, Virginia. We’ll miss his camaraderie and spiritual guidance. He has been transferred to Pennsylvania. We wish Padre and his family much success. Thanks to all the Sir Knights and Brother Knights and family members who assisted (with arranging, set-up/tear-down, meal preparation, etc.) along with all who attended our first joint commemoration of the USS Scorpion SSN 589 and Four Chaplains on Memorial Day weekend, May 29th. This year we combined the memorials of the Four Army Chaplains (sponsored by Fr John P Washington Assembly 2184) who freely gave of their lived during World War II so that others might live, with our 48th remembrance of the 99 sailors lost at sea in 1968. Severe rains of tropical storm “Bonnie” forced the ceremony to be held inside the Virginia War Museum. This only made it more memorable for the packed, standing room only 60 capacity theatre. An estimated 125 community members (35 of whom were cub and boy scouts) came out to pay tribute. Your support made this a very successful and truly meaningful event for the family members, members of the Navy, Army and community. People across the United State celebrate Flag Day on June 14 to honor the United States flag and to commemorate the flag’s adoption. The flag of the United States represents freedom and has been an enduring symbol of the country’s ideals since early days. Americans remember their loyalty to the nation, reaffirm their belief in liberty and justice and observe the nation’s unity. Display your proudly on June 14th.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel hosts Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on the first Friday-Saturday of each month. Brothers and their families are invited to pray for one hour in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Nocturnal Adoration hours are 3:00 p.m. on Friday 6:00 a.m. on Saturday. Upcoming Nocturnal Adorations: 3-4 June; 1-2 July; 5-6 August.

Congratulations to Brother Richard Rinaldo for recently being named this year’s national commander for the Legion of Valor — the oldest military service organization in the country and in all likelihood the most exclusive. To qualify for membership, a veteran must have earned a Medal of Honor or one of the next-highest military awards — a Navy Cross, a Distinguished Service Cross or an Air Force Cross. The Legion has only about 400 living members. Brother Rinaldo, who retired from the Army as a lieutenant colonel, earned a Distinguished Service Cross in Vietnam in March 1969. As a result of his being chosen commander, the Legion will hold its national conference in Newport News in April 2017 — a first for the city. The 116th Annual Meeting of the Virginia Knights of Columbus was held at the Hyatt Regency Dulles Hotel in Herndon, VA in early May 2016. Activities included selecting officers for the 2016-2017 Fraternal Year and award presentations for outstanding councils as well as Knight and Family of the Year. Elected to state office for the coming term were:

For the third time in the past several months, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson testified before Congress, this time before the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. At the hearing, he described a dire situation for Christians in Iraq and Syria that the United States could take steps to improve. “Many of the region’s indigenous communities now face extinction. These communities may disappear in less than a decade. But their fate is not inevitable,” Anderson warned lawmakers. http://www.kofc.org/en/news/releases/christian-communities-face-extinction.html
